The product of two days of recording in the Philadelphia home of Jack Rose, Pelt's ninth release (CD-Rs not included) is, on first encounter, an austere affair. Both the album and its four compositions are untitled. The cover is made up of fuzzy, black-and-white close-ups of various instruments. The information inside is minimal, providing no specifics regarding who played what. All of this restraint, however, seems designed to let the music contained speak for itself. Each piece here unfolds in an organic fashion: the musicians letting the sound around them dictate what they play rather than forcing the music's development. The result is a series of immense, drone-based structures, performed entirely on acoustic instruments. The contributions of Rose, Patrick Best, Mike Gangloff, and newly inaugurated Mikel Dimmick seem, at first glance, to blur together into a single sound mass. Deeper listening, however, reveals greater detail. On Untitled, it's as if previous Pelt creations have been placed under a microscope, revealing the music's grain. The high recording quality adds to this sensation, the sound almost physically present. The album opener immerses the listener in a murky sea, the music bobbing back and forth against low pulses, and clanks for its duration. Track three, made up of higher-pitched, shimmering textures, constantly changes its shape as the sound of various stringed instruments rise to, then sink below, the hazy surface. It's the second song, however, that feels like the true centerpiece. Here, the details of the group's palette are brought into focus. The sounds of individual voices (percussion strokes, string scrapes, Rose's fingerpicking) reveal the subtleties behind shifts through a series of disparate musical environments, from swelling turbulence, to reflective calm, to eerie desolation. Capped off by a brief, dissonant string piece, Untitled offers an hour of rich, expansive, carefully developed sound. ~ Nathan Bush

Pelt album
$13.69 Oceanic is the next logical step for Isis after the ugly, grandiose Celestial, the Aaron Turner-led outfit's second full-length looking simultaneously inward and outward, reaching into the nether regions of outer space while still keeping its feet firmly earthbound. Yes, it's an ambitious record, one that isn't immediately consumed ...

Pelt CD music
$30.39 All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology.
The first of two Vee Jay label dates by the acclaimed modern jazz bassist Paul Chambers is a fine exercise in hard bop, split between showcasing his compositions and famous standards. Alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard are on the front line, perhaps for the only time in their storied careers, and work well for the most part. Pianist Wynton Kelly and either drummers Philly Joe Jones or Jimmy Cobb complete the quintets. The advantage in buying this reissue is that the second CD is comprised exclusively of outtakes from the originally issued tracks, and many of them have extended solos. Of the covers, "There Is No Greater Love" features a chuckling and cajoling Adderley, very happy for the fortune smiling on him, while "Just Friends" has the two horns playing this chestnut pretty much straight, with counterpointed stop-start techniques chirping at the rhythm section, and a young Hubbard offering his best solo. "I Got Rhythm" brings Cobb to the team, as a modal base from Kelly and Chambers buoys the wailing horns. Of the originals, Hubbard and Adderley sound mismatched on the 6/8 to 3/4 calypso-swing "Julie Ann," where their ...
| | Enon Lost Marbles And Exploded Evidence CD (2005) Bonus DVD; Limited Edition
Pelt music CDs
$13.39 With a track listing that spans six years and several different band lineups, Enon's singles, B-sides, and rare tracks collection Lost Marbles and Exploded Evidence could have been too scattered for its own good, but it's actually one of the band's most enjoyable releases. There's something endearing about the twists and turns the band take as their music evolves from Believo!'s post-Brainiac spazz pop into the more stylish (but just as quirky) sounds of High Society and Hocus Pocus (the comp's liner notes give a playful nod to this evolution, marking the earliest tracks with eggs and tadpoles and the later songs with full-grown frogs). The try-anything approach on the whole collection -- even the tracks that don't entirely work -- holds it together and keeps it from sounding too exploded, despite the fact that the album gathers songs as disparate as "Marbles Explode," a skronky, Believo!-era artifact, and "Raisin Heart," a delicate, almost loungey track from a 2001 7". Some of the best tracks were "Songs of the Month" on the band's website: "Knock That Door" is quasi-Shibuya-kei that's as charming as anything by Takako Minekawa or Kahimi Karie, while "Adalania (Not So Fair)" is a piece of chamber synth pop that's kissing cousins with High Society's title track. These songs, along with the space invaders duet "The Nightmare of Atomic Men," "Tilt You Up!," and the gorgeous, bittersweet "Kanon," are as good as Enon's proper album tracks. Short bursts of sonic mischief like "Below Infinite Ways" and "Making Merry! Merry!" fill ...

| | Sarah Fimm White Birds CD (2009)
Pelt CD music
$9.35 White Birds Released May 12th, 2009!White Birds is Sarah Fimm's fourth release. It is the first in a series of projects due for release this year 2009. It is now available for purchase through various online retail locations. Also included on this Enhanced CD, is the Official White Birds Video, in Dolby 5. 1 surround. Enjoy! What some people have said about her: From BILLBOARD White BirdsSarah Fimm's 2004 album "Nexus" was a stunning celestial journey, while 2002's "A Perfect Dream" contained a chilling, isolated beauty. Thankfully, 2009 heralds new delights from the singer/songwriter. The title track to the EP "White Birds" has the same lofty quality, but Fimm has migrated to a warmer climate. Soft tones invitingly gurgle as she artfully positions each synthesizer, their gossamer sounds gently resonating. Violins join in, dipping and sawing with carefree ease. "White Birds" can fit a variety of moods; you can unwind to it in a hot bath or ignite a promising romantic spark. Visit whitebirdsep for other winsome selections. -Christa L. Titus KGRL's Best Albums Of 2008by Mysty of KGRL. fmSarah Fimm - White Birds EPIt's been a while since we last heard from singer / songwriter Sarah Fimm. When news broke out that she was preparing to release not one but three EPs, we were ecstatic. Apparently, the long wait was because she refuses to release something less than stellar. With the release of the first of the three planned EPs (two of which are set for 2009), titled White Birds, everything became clear. It isn't just stellar, it's a supermassive black hole that sucked me right in. ...
