Several Gil Scott-Heron compilations were released throughout the '70s, '80s, '90s, and early 2000s, but 2005's Messages was the first to concentrate on the material released between 1973 and 1979 -- a productive phase involving seven albums, most of which were represented by a track or two on the preceding overviews. Featuring multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Brian Jackson, these albums were often filler-prone but they were never lacking at least a few moments in which everything clicked. At their best, the duo collaborated on jazzed-up funk that, while far more somber and sober, was just as funky as -- and often more poignant than -- anything on Sly & the Family Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On. This is a shame since Scott-Heron's career is often reduced to "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and a couple other sound bites, whereas the one Sly album is routinely held up as a hallmark -- and rightly so, but the depth of Scott-Heron's catalog is shortchanged with as much frequency. The U.K.'s Soul Brother label, always a reliable source for digging deeper, pulls up a smart selection that includes "We Almost Lost Detroit," "The Bottle," "Winter in America," "Show Bizness," the 12-minute live version of "Home Is Where the Hatred Is," and "Angel Dust," which wound up being Scott-Heron's highest-charting single (number 15 Black Singles, 1977). ~ Andy Kellman
Gil Scott Heron is one of the most influential black music artists of his generation. Like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Curtis Mayfield his music transgresses all music boundaries, and he is heralded in rock as in soul and jazz circles. Along with his partner and lyricist Brian Jackson, Gil wrote and recorded some of the most memorable songs of the 70's always with poignant lyrics. 'The Bottle' has been a club favourite since its release in 1973, 'Johannesburg' predicted the unrest in South Africa two years before Soweto, 'Its Your World' has been in demand for past ten years or so. This album puts together 15 of the best and most in demand of their recordings from 1973 to 1980, and is the first collection covering that period for 15 years. Many of the tracks have not appeared on CD since then and some are making their first appearance on CD. Soul Brother Records. 2005. Anthology Messages Review

| | Black Sabbath Black Box: The Complete Original 1970-1978 CDs (2004)
Anthology Messages CD music
$64.29 This release includes a bonus DVD featuring live footage of Black Sabbath performing "Black Sabbath," "Paranoid," "Iron Man," and "Blue Suede Shoes" on the German television show THE BEAT CLUB.
Recorded between 1972 & 1978. Includes liner notes by Chris Welch and Brian Ives Tim Scanlin.
Although Ozzy Osbourne has had a huge cultural impact as both a solo artist and an unlikely TV star, his true legacy lies in the eight albums he recorded with Black Sabbath between 1970 and 1978. Though musical performers in various genres regularly conjured up images of evil (most notably the Rolling Stones on "Sympathy for the Devil"), no act ever actually sounded consistently evil until Sabbath's self-titled first record. The British quartet's sound arrived fully formed, with Tony Iommi's crushing guitar riffs, Geezer Butler's ominous bass lines, and Bill Ward's almost-tribal drumming perfectly complementing Osbourne's haunting vocals.
This gorgeously morbid, pitch-black box set chronicles Sabbath's development, including ...

Anthology Messages music CDs
$33.75 The Small Faces present their four disc U.K. import reissue release OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE.
Having begun their career as the archetypal Mod band, the Small Faces latterly embraced traces of flower-power's whimsy. Astute enough not to sacrifice their identity, the quartet retained a distinctive perspective, as evinced by a string of superb pop singles, including "Here Comes The Nice" and "Itchycoo Park." A sense of pop melody and adventurism culminated on this album which encompassed tongue-in-cheek fun ("Lazy Sunday") and passionate love songs ("Afterglow"). Steve Marriott's voice remains completely self-assured and the group's characteristic organ-based swell is often enhanced by P.P. Arnold's emotional backing vocals. Eccentric comedian Stanley Unwin narrates the concept suite "Happiness Stan," but the music is strong enough to withstand the novelty tag. OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE was the Small Faces' swan-song, at least until an ill-starred reunion, but it proved a fitting end to a golden era.

$17.79 This two-fer from Beat Goes On features a pair of out-of-print Spirit LPs: Son of Spirit and Farther Along. Both originally released in 1976 on Mercury, these 22 tracks include some fine compositions, including "Stoney Night," "Magic Fairy Princess," and Lennon/McCartney's "Yesterday." This is an enjoyable reissue, but the absence of two original key members, vocalist Jay Ferguson and bassist Mark Anders, is felt. Most listeners would be better served with Epic/Legacy's 16-track Best of Spirit or the 1970 masterpiece The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus. ~ Al Campbell
Digitally remastered collation of two original LP's on a single CD from the veteran San Francisco based rock band. They first appeared in 1975 and 1976 ...
