In late 1985, there was good reason to believe that Marilyn Martin would become a pop/rock superstar. Her duet with Phil Collins, "Separate Lives," soared to number one on the pop charts, and her supporters assumed that she was going to become as big as Stevie Nicks, Laura Branigan or Pat Benatar. But regrettably, Martin's commercial success turned out to be short-lived -- after 1988's This Is Serious, she was dropped by Atlantic and never recorded another album. Nonetheless, the Southern vocalist had a lot of potential, and she showed considerable promise on this self-titled debut album of 1986. Although this LP doesn't contain "Separate Lives," it's still a solid pop/rock outing and is the more essential of her two Atlantic albums (which isn't to say that This Is Serious isn't highly enjoyable). The producers of Marilyn Martin include, among others, Arif Mardin, Jon Astley and Philip Chapman -- all of whom favor a very slick, glossy, high-tech approach. The high-tech effects make tracks like "Turn It On," "Beauty or the Beast," and the single "Night Moves" sound very dated; everything on this record screams "1980s" in no uncertain terms. However, dated isn't necessarily a bad thing if you hold a particular era in high regard -- and if you're obsessed with all things '80s, the dated production might actually be a plus. Whatever you think of the production, Marilyn Martin is definitely a strong debut. ~ Alex Henderson

| Marilyn Martin Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Very Classy, Very Fresh Finally had a chance to listen to this after 19 years and really reminds me of someone new to the scene buy I know that's not true. Marilyn is one of those artists who really never got a break in the music business and thus faded out of view. This recording is worth the time and money, you bet! Take a deep listen and you will understand why I call her music very fresh and Marilyn very classy. Submitted by Robert John Roberts (Tama, IA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Save your time and money "Night Moves" is a great song, but the rest of this album is mostly filler. Most of the songs go nowhere and utterly lack originality. My advice: Download "Night Moves" (and maybe "Beauty or the Beast") and skip the rest. Submitted by sk1002 (Omaha, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Decent but forgettable Marilyn Martin came bursting off the blocks with her single "Night Moves" in early 1986. When I first heard it, I was blown away. Unfortunately, it didn't do as well as it should have on the charts. And that is her last hit to date.
The brilliant "Night Moves" is far and away the best song off this album. The rest of the album pales in comparison, even though there are some enjoyable moments. Overall, the album is something of a generic listening experience. The songs tend to be forgettable, and Martin, while a good singer, often doesn't inject enough personality into the numbers. As a result, she sounds rather anonymous at times. That's probably a result of the weak material, because she sounds just great on "Night Moves."
After "Night Moves," the other four songs on the first half of the album plain fall flat. They're well-produced, but they essentially go nowhere. The second half is better. Probably the next-best song on the album is the slick "Beauty or the Beast," which sounds like something Heart might have recorded. It's a stirring rocker, and sounds very '80s, but *good* '80s. There's also the sensual cover of "Move Closer," originally performed by Phyllis Nelson--it's a good song, but a tad on the boring side. The other songs on the second half are decent.
It's a shame that Marilyn Martin didn't get the material she deserved on her debut. Is this a competent album? Yes. Is it a great album? No. Too many of the songs are just colorless and lack memorable hooks--they end up sounding like castoffs from more famous artists. If you like Marilyn Martin (and she is very talented), I suppose this album is worth checking out. But except for "Night Moves" (especially) and a couple of other songs, you can safely skip over most of the material here.
I have to admit that I'm puzzled by all the glowing reviews of this album (both here and on Amazon, although one person over there gave it only 2 stars). They are the reason I bought the album, and I ended up being quite disappointed. Submitted by panettonea (Atlanta, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Can't believe this album wasn't huge With the looks, pipes and all-star cast, this should have been a sure-fire smash. It still is a timeless classic and my hat is off to Wounded Bird for saving Marilyn Martin fans the stiff Ebay import price for this almost too-perfect debut. This star who never got to twinkle as much as the others. Hottest tracks: Night Moves, Dream Is Always The Same, Move Closer, Beauty And The Beast. Marilyn Martin album
$11.69 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Ferry's first solo effort since the second breakup of Roxy Music is arguably his best, in part because it continues in the direction the band had been going. It's like AVALON, only more so.
Here, Ferry's lounge lizard affectations are writ large; the lyrical pose is all bruised romantic fatalism (say hello, "Slave to Love"), and the music fits it like a glove. The album's soundscapes are lush and echo-laden, and nearly every track has a discreet disco pulse; "Valentine," the one exception, is mid-tempo ...
| | Laura Branigan Self Control CD (1984)
Marilyn Martin CD music
$5.95 Laura Branigan's third album capitalized on the Euro-dance-pop and affecting ballads that made her an international star while allowing her to grow as a vocalist. Her collections, always uneven in terms of material, benefit mostly from her stellar voice, and this is no exception."The Lucky One" and "Heart" start slow and build to a crescendo, perfectly showcasing her range without being obvious. The title track, about finding sex in the seamy side of town, sparked a bit of a controversy, ...

$9.69 The grand opener "We Belong to the Night" is breathtaking and bombastic bliss; a creamy confection of debonair dreams that could only come from the late '70s and the glitter-gutter combo of Mick Ronson and Ian Hunter. The princely poppers provide the perfect atmosphere for Foley's ...
| | Rick Springfield Living In Oz CD (1983)
Marilyn Martin album
$5.95 Though this was Rick Springfield's ninth album, it seemed like the third to most pop music fans, as it came on the heels of his breakthrough, Working Class Dog, and its successful follow-up, Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet. And though this contained as many hits as the aforementioned collections, it isn't remembered as quite the same in terms of accomplishment; this may be because it is so personal that it's just not as accessible. Living in Oz is Springfield's response to the ...

| | Walter Clevenger Full Tilt And Swing CD (2003)
Marilyn Martin music CDs
$12.49 For some reason, Costa Mesa, CA's Walter Clevenger hasn't released an LP in the four years since 1999's Love Songs to Myself, but he remains true to the blueprint of his first three (including the cassette-only debut, 1995's PoPgOeStHeMuSiC, which was reprised and re-recorded for 1997's The Man with the X-Ray Eyes). On Full Tilt and Swing, he still sounds like Nick Lowe backed by Teenage Fanclub if the Scottish band listened more to Tom Petty than Big Star. You could easily imagine Petty crooning a track like "Supermarket Checkout Queen" or "Love Don't Mean Anything"; and like Petty, he works in a Roger McGuinn-inspired Rickenbacker ringing guitar now and then. But he also has a lot of country roots, more freely indulged in songs such as "Not Gonna Bend," which pick up at that same Buck Owens-fed place the Beatles flirted with on For Sale (aka Beatles '65). The production is way too lightweight and tidy, but the man doesn't lack for tuneful songs if you don't mind something a lot more radio-friendly, and if you pine for the days of Rockpile and their take on Fats Domino and Buddy Holly. Walter Clevenger & The Dairy Kings absolutely love the weather in Orange County, California...and that's where the love affair ends. With their blend of pop, roots-rock and county, it's clear they are in the minority when compared to all the bands that share the same musical ecosystem. But to be honest, it's a place they ...
