Brimstone Solar Radiation Band album
$12.05 This is an Enhanced audio CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Additional personnel includes: Melanie Crandall (cello); Neils Galloway (French horn); David Hernandez (bass).
The Shins appeared out of the middle of New Mexico as if by magic, though they had been around for a while under several other names on several different labels. In a landscape of boy bands, pre-teen chanteuses, and nu metal, the literate, '60s-influenced jangle of the Shins' debut seems a bizarre anomaly. This is indie rock that channels Love and Creation rather than the Ramones and Sex Pistols.
Standouts include "One ...
| | Godspeed You Black Emperor Yanqui U.X.O. CD (2002)
Brimstone Solar Radiation Band CD music
$12.89 From the bombs dropping on the cover to the slow buildups towards destruction and post-rock beauty in the compositions, this is Godspeed You Black Emperor at its most stripped-down, straightforward, and unsparing. Indie-rock icon Steve Albini produced YANQUI U.X.O., and his trademark extreme dynamics suit this shadowy Canadian collective well, weighing down on the roots of their whisper-to-frenzy style so they can freely branch off into new realms. The opener "09-15-00" departs into twangy, lounge-like territory not out of place for a Sergio Leone-cum-David Lynch nightmare (though it's apparently about Israel). "Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls" raises dark towers from shaky foundations of shivery Phillip Glass-style arpeggios, while the lead-heavy drones in "Motherf***er = Redeemer" sink into pools of near-total abstraction.
Godspeed cultists are generally divided on this album, though few debate its unusually high--even for the band--apocalyptic gloom quotient. This is probably not an advisable first listen ...

| | Ginger Baker's Airforce CD (1970)
Brimstone Solar Radiation Band songs
$13.09 Reissue of the acclaimed drummer's 1970 post Cream project, recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall. He is joined by many special guests here including, Steve Winwood, Rick Grech, Chris Wood, Denny Laine, Graham Bond & more.
For a change, the late 1960s yielded up a supergroup that lived up to its hype and then some. Ginger Baker's Air Force was recorded live at Royal Albert Hall in January of 1970 -- in fact, this may be the best-sounding live album ever to come out of that notoriously difficult venue -- at a show that must have been a wonder to watch, as the ten-piece band blazed away in sheets of sound, projected delicate flute parts behind multi-layered African percussion, or built their songs up Bolero-like, out of rhythms from a single instrument into huge jazz-cum-R&B crescendos. Considering that this was only their second gig, the group sounds astonishingly tight, which greatly reduces the level of self-indulgence that one would expect to find on an album where five of the eight tracks run in excess of ten minutes. There aren't too many wasted notes or phrases in the 78 minutes of music included here, and Steve Winwood's organ, Baker, Phil Seamen, and Remi Kabaka's drums, and the sax playing by Chris Wood, Graham Bond (on alto), and Harold McNair, all stand out, especially the sax trio's interwoven playing on "Don't Care." Additionally, ...
| | Church El Momento Descuidado CD (2005)
Brimstone Solar Radiation Band album
$13.89 EL MOMENTO DESCUIDADO, which follows up 2004's underrated FORGET YOURSELF, finds the Church performing stripped-down renditions of their classic songs, while adding a handful of new tunes to the mix. The long-running Australian quartet sounds remarkably vibrant on this 14-track set, which begins, appropriately enough, with a gentle rendition of "The ...
| | Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Howl CD (2005)
Brimstone Solar Radiation Band CD music
$9.89 A significant departure for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, HOWL finds the Los Angeles-based trio abandoning the cold, amped-up sound of TAKE THEM ON, ON YOUR OWN in favor of a more heartfelt, acoustic-oriented aesthetic. (It's noteworthy that frontman Robert Turner has gone back to his birth name, Robert Levon Been, and his father, Michael Been, of the ...
| | Outnumber Surveying The Damage CD (1998)
Brimstone Solar Radiation Band music CDs
$12.95 SURVEYING THE DAMAGE is a compilation of The Outnumbered's three out-of-print albums.
Includes liner notes by Jon Ginoli, Paul Budin and Miles Harvey.
What set the Outnumbered apart from the countless jangle-pop bands who emerged in the post-R.E.M. era was not simply the quality of Jon Ginoli's melodic and spiky songs, but also the deep conviction of his lyrics -- whether tackling matters of life and death (the psychedelia-tinged anti-war diatribe "Cover Me with Flowers") or those closer to home ("You Need a Babysitter," a biting attack on arrested adolescence), there's an idealism and intelligence to the band's music which never fails to hit the mark. Most profound are Ginoli's ...
