New York Renaissance Band Novella CD  (2000)

Greatest Hits - Vaughan Williams
CD $11.19  4 stars
This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Richard Morel. INNOCENTS AND ILLUSIONS compiles the albums RENAISSANCE and ILLUSIONS, as well as bonus tracks. Recorded between 1969 & 1998. Includes liner notes by David Wells. Throw on this 1977 set from these hard-working prog rockers and you'll quickly realize that E.L.P. and Yes has nothing on these guys. Features five tracks, including "Can You Hear Me?" and "The Sisters." This double-disc set offers the first two Renaissance albums in state-of-the-art sound, which is a big help, but there's also a lot more than that -- the producers have augmented the group's self-titled debut album with the single edit of "Island," and the B-side "The Sea," a good piano-driven piece that's a killer showcase for Jane Relf's falsetto, as well as the backup singing of Keith Relf. Much more important is the addition on disc two (devoted mostly to the Illusion album) of the four songs that Keith Relf and Jim McCarty recorded before and after the ...

Hollies What Goes Around... CD  (1983) Reissued

Greatest Hits - Vaughan Williams
CD $9.69  4 stars
What Goes Around... heralded the return of Graham Nash into the Hollies fold after a 15-year (1968-1983) sabbatical. Although the absence of bassist Bernie Calvert technically disqualifies this effort as a true reunion of the "classic" mid-'60s incarnation, the quartet assembled for this album and subsequent North American tour features the talents of Nash (vocals), Alan Clarke (vocals), Tony Hicks (vocals/guitars), and Bobby Elliott (drums). The combination of decent songwriting -- although there are no contributions from the band -- and their densely constructed trademark vocal blend makes this oft-overlooked assemblage worthy of revisitation. The seeds of this project were planted nearly 18 months before the album was released. The first incarnation of the band -- including original bassist Eric Haydock -- ...

Percy Faith Today's Themes For Young Lovers/For Those In Love CD  (2002)

Greatest Hits - Vaughan Williams
CD $10.69  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Collectables' two-fer reissue of the Percy Faith albums Today's Themes for Young Lovers and For Those in Love is an excellent match-up. The former album was Faith's summer 1967 LP release, and it was followed by the latter in the winter of 1968. Faith took the same approach with both, recording his versions of hits with his orchestra and, on most tracks, a female chorus, so you might as well call this reissue "Percy Faith Plays the Hits of 1967." Three of the year's Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers -- "Happy Together," "Somethin' Stupid," and "Windy" -- are included, along with lots of other soft rock successes. Faith's arrangements usually contain elements from the hit recordings, ...

Andy Williams Warm And Willing/Newest Hits CD  (2002)

Greatest Hits - Vaughan Williams
CD $10.49  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
As welcome as Collectables' modestly priced two-fer CD reissues of Andy Williams' original LPs are to Williams fans, the label's decisions about which albums to couple are sometimes curious. Here is a good case in point. Warm and Willing was Williams' third Columbia Records LP, recorded in the spring of 1962. It consists largely of pop standards from the 1920s and '30s, songs written by such masters as George & Ira Gershwin and Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields for classic stage and movie musicals. Williams and his arranger/conductor, Robert Mersey, were taking a leaf from Frank Sinatra's playbook and constructing a concept album of great ballads that set a romantic mood. This collection is paired with Andy Williams' Newest Hits, a compilation originally released in the winter of 1965-1966 that was a grab bag of stray Williams singles, B-sides, and album tracks covering the previous four years. There is some worthy material ...

Greatest Hits - Vaughan Williams
CD $15.65  4.5 stars Audio Samples
Recorded between 1965 and 1981. Includes liner notes by Dawn Eden. With their flower-power-tinged pop masterpieces and heavenly vocal harmonies the Association was at the epicenter of the '60s California "sunshine pop" scene whose other luminaries included the Mamas & the Papas and the Beach Boys. Though the group's many hits make up a major part of the '60s musical legacy, the Association's only representation on CD in the US before the release of t '60s folk and rock fans remember David Blue as perhaps the most authentic Dylan imitator in an era full of them, and certainly everything about this 1966 release, from the half-spoken, half-sung vocals, to the bluesy, keyboard-rich arrangements, to even the album cover ...

Percy Faith Born Free/The Windmills Of Your Mind CD  (2002)

Greatest Hits - Vaughan Williams
CD $10.69  4.7 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
The two albums contained on this discount-priced two-fer each contain Percy Faith's arrangements of movie music of the 1960s. Born Free was originally titled The Academy Award Winner and Other Great Movie Themes when it appeared in the spring of 1967 because, while Faith had recorded all five of the 1966 Oscar nominees for best song on it, the LP was printed before the winner, "Born Free," had been announced. Windmills of Your Mind, in 1969, appeared after the Oscar ceremony, but it, too, featured all five of the year's nominees. Also included were themes that, while they might not have been "songs" in the Academy sense, were Oscar-worthy, such as "Somewhere My Love (Lara's Theme From 'Dr. Zhivago')," from Maurice Jarre's score, which won the ...
