Taking its cue from the rhythms of dancehall and reggaeton, Rihanna's MUSIC OF THE SUN is a dance-pop record with enough distinctive accents and flavors to make it stand out from the crowd. Rihanna's debut takes island-influenced beats and Jamaican-inflected accents and superimposes them on straight-up contemporary R&B. The combination works nicely, as evidenced by "Pon de Replay," the album's incredibly infectious lead-off track and single. Rihanna effectively synthesizes reggae's cadences into her singsong melodies, bringing some of that genre's sunny beauty to the urban pulses of modern dance-pop, making MUSIC OF THE SUN a perfect soundtrack for the club dancefloor and outdoor summer parties alike.
Personnel: Rihanna (vocals); Elephant Man, Kardinal Offishall (vocals); Vybz Kartel, J-Status (rap vocals); Mikkel SE (various instruments); Carl Sturken (guitar, piano, keyboards, programming); Richard Locker (cello); Larry Glazener (bass instrument); Full Force, Sharina Sharpe (background vocals).

Music Of The Sun album
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed ...
| | Black Eyed Peas Monkey Business CD (2005) Digipak
Music Of The Sun CD music
$10.45 The Black Eyed Peas' fourth outing, MONKEY BUSINESS, picks up right where their platinum-selling breakout album, ELEPHUNK, left off, with the feel of a non-stop party run by an ultra-savvy DJ. "Pump It" opens the disc on a straight sample of Dick Dale's surf classic "Misirlou," as the three MCs of BEP float in and out--sometimes rapid-fire, sometimes measured--with Fergie stepping in on cue to alternately sing softly or with deep, soulful emotion.
The Peas' origins are tied to the DJ-driven world of breakdancing, and that flavor saturates MONKEY BUSINESS, as beats drop in and out, tracks blend into other tracks, and a lighthearted spirit of sophisticated ecstasy prevails. The aforementioned "Pump It" slides flawlessly into the lively single "Don't Phunk with My Heart," and the stage for the album is set. Icons James Brown and Sting drop by, on the uncompromisingly funky "They Don't Want Music" and the reggae-soaked "Union," respectively, but they're just guests on board for the ride (along with Justin Timberlake, John Legend, and others), part of the musical mural. The Black Eyed Peas turned from underground favorites to hit-making performers on ELEPHUNK; this follow-up ...
| | Keyshia Cole Way It Is CD (2005)
Music Of The Sun music CDs
$10.69 Far from the usual fizzy pop practiced by contemporaries like Beyonce and Kelis, the debut album from Oakland-born singer/songwriter Keyshia Cole is full of sophisticated, adult R&B that bridges the gap between the neo-soul likes of Alicia Keys and the inspired, kinetic hip-hop of Kanye West. Keys and West both guest here, on the singles "(I Just Want It) To Be Over" and "I Changed My Mind," respectively, but Cole is a compelling enough performer ...
| | Ne-Yo In My Own Words CD (2006)
Music Of The Sun songs
$12.39 The grooves on IN MY OWN WORDS are mostly down- to mid-tempo, with plenty of room to showcase Ne-Yo's way with a lyric and melody. The album's first single, "Stay," is a case in point, layering vocal lines for a choral effect while Ne-Yo's fine, flexible voice soars over the top. As one might expect, matters of the heart are the primary theme, but Ne-Yo ...
| | Rihanna Girl Like Me CD (2006)
Music Of The Sun album
$13.69 Rihanna's "Pon the Replay" was the jam of summer 2005, and with good reason: its Caribbean-flavored rhythms and infectious, singalong chorus made it nearly irresistible. The Barbados-born singer's full-length, MUSIC OF THE SUN, performed well on the strength of the single, and offered more of Rihanna's commercially tailored dancehall-pop.
A GIRL LIKE ME, Rihanna's sophomore release, is less overtly dancehall-influenced than its predecessor. Instead, the album makes a more straightforward play for mainstream R&B appeal. The album's lead-off single and video "SOS," for example, centers on a sample from Soft Cell's version of "Tainted Love" (including the immediately recognizable laser-gun sound), making for a bouncy, sexy pop confection. "Unfaithful" is an R&B ballad that finds Rihanna in torch mode, and sounds like a hit in the making. While there's nothing quite as striking as "Pon the Replay" here, there is plenty to power Rihanna's rise up the charts.
New package w/ sampler.

| | Nelly Furtado Loose CD (2006)
Music Of The Sun CD music
$10.45 On her third studio album, LOOSE, Nelly Furtado largely abandons the bohemian vibe of previous outings, opting for an energetic, club-ready sound said to be influenced by the time she spent recording in Miami. The Canadian-born singer-songwriter approaches this significant change with wild ...

| | Reuben Wilson Boogaloo To The Beastie Boys CD (2004)
Music Of The Sun CD music
$12.55 The real proof in the pudding of whether the Beastie Boys can really funk it up isn't on their own records. Naysayers have been claiming that it's all a rip, that the grooves are pure sample-happy appropriation. While Dr. Lonnie Smith gave Beck the B-3 treatment on his own Boogaloo to Beck, Love Bug mastermind and killer B-3 boss Ruben Wilson snagged P-Funk keyboard ace Bernie Worrell, saxophonist Andrew Beals, and a rhythm section that includes guitarist Doug Munro and skin popper LaFrae Olivia Sci and dug deep into the Beasties' catalog to let the real soul groove out of the bag. Wilson, unlike many of his peers, is a man who has a defined and ready sense of humor, which is perhaps why his own tunes have been sampled so heavily by DJs and hip-hop rascals. There's no kitsch, no gimmick, just good dirty, nasty fun on this set. One standout on a rather seamless album is the hep reading of "Sabotage," with Beals, Munro, and Wilson trading ...
