Jason Aldean has been slugging it out as a professional singer since high school, and the confidence gleaned from years of experience shines though on his self-titled debut album, as he delivers a strong collection of blue collar-themed songs in a smooth, polished tenor. Lyrics about philosophical farmers ("Amarillo Sky"), small-town pride ("Hicktown"), and moments of spiritual insight ("Good to Go") are backed by twangy, honky tonk-ish Telecaster licks and rock-influenced country rhythms of the Alabama/Sawyer Brown variety. "Asphalt Cowboy" is a contemporary update of classic 1970s lonesome-trucker songs (complete with weeping steel guitar), while "You're The Love I Wanna Be In" borrows licks from 1980's AOR power pop of the .38 Special/Rick Springfield mold. Chock full of variety and energetic performances, JASON ALDEAN is a great introduction to a promising talent.
Personnel: Jason Aldean (vocals); Adam Schoenfeld (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Mike Noble (acoustic guitar); Jack Sizemore, Kurt Allison (electric guitar); Michael Johnson (steel guitar); Smith Curry (lap steel guitar); Jason Mowery (mandolin, fiddle); Steve King, Tony Harrell (keyboards); Tully Kennedy (bass guitar); Rich Redmond (drums, percussion).

Jason Aldean album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of ...
| | Brad Paisley Time Well Wasted CD (2005)
Jason Aldean CD music
$9.59 Brad Paisley's music is an interesting amalgam of country sub-genres, a paradigm all its own. He melds straightforward, pop-friendly New Country with clever, somewhat Lyle Lovett-like songwriting and the occasional flutter of Joe Maphis/Jimmy Bryant-style guitar virtuosity. Surprisingly or not, this country combo platter made Paisley a star, and TIME WELL WASTED continues in the aforementioned vein. While there are some fairly mainstream moments here that wouldn't ruffle the feathers of, say, the average Kenny Chesney fan, WASTED boasts plenty of smart, sassy tunes brimming with lyrical witticisms worthy of Tom T. Hall or Shel Silverstein. "Alcohol," ...

| | Gus Backus My Chick Is Fine CD (1995) (Import) Import; Germany
Jason Aldean CD music
$20.09 It's tempting to say that Gus Backus could've been another Ricky Nelson, or another Jack Scott -- except that he really was, in Germany. This 30-song overview of Backus' English-language output from the late '50s through the end of 1967 is a decidedly mixed bag of sounds, many of them extremely pleasing, and a lot of them surprising as well. Backus' biggest hits in Germany were in German, but his English-language songs are just fine, as well as fully competitive with those of any top rock & roller (this side of Elvis, anyway) from 1958 on. A lot of the material here is closer to pop than rock & roll, and some of the ballads, including "Linda," are on the syrupy side, but it's not hard to understand how he could parlay his singing (and national origin) into something akin to superstardom in Germany. "Just Say Goodbye," from 1964, is a solid, hard-rocking dance number complete with hard lead guitar and organ, a pretty raw harmonica solo, and an unpretentious girl chorus backing a bold, macho lead vocal performance by Backus. "Turn Around," from the same year, could pass for a Merseybeat-style number -- and those are just two of the revelatory discoveries with which this collection is encrusted. "I'm Comin' Home," from a 1967 London session (but unreleased until 1995), is a bit of a throwback to the mid-60s British beat sound, but it still could've held its own against any English pop/rock single of the period; one suspects that this is roughly what producer Bert Kaempfert was looking for from ...

| | Mighty Day: 25 Gospel Greats CD (2006) Import
Jason Aldean album
$13.25 This wonderful set of period gospel tracks ranging from the 1920s through the mid-'50s from Document Records has all the proof you'll ever need that gospel was instrumental in the creation of rock & roll, R&B, doo wop, soul, and even rap and hip-hop, as track after track clatters along on explosive rhythms and inventive vocal arrangements. It's also obvious here how much gospel and the blues cross-pollinated each other through the decades, moving in tandem like two sides of the same coin. Check out the energetic trashcan rhythm of Anthony Butler's "My God Is a Mighty Man" or Rev. Kelsey's free-form rap sermon on "I'm a Witness for the Lord" to hear the roots of the hip-hop generation. Rev. Robert Ballinger manages to create a kind of rockabilly/jazz hybrid with his version of "This Train," while Mary Deloatch's "The Lord's Gospel Train" is nothing short of bluesy rock & roll. Then there are the amazing vocal simulations of the Wright Brothers Gospel Singers, who literally create the sound of an engine approaching with their voices on "Gospel Train" (there are a whole lot of communal trains roaring through this collection, a metaphor that links these sides to the era in which they were recorded -- in time cars would become more dominant in songs as the 20th century marched on and away from community and toward increased personal insularity). Other gems here include Elder Charles Beck's jazzy ...
