1976's THREE is easily one of Bob James' finest recordings. The Creed Taylor-produced album makes its statement with five classic pieces arranged and conducted by James. "Westchester Lady" ranks among the biggest successes of the keyboardist's long career.
The album opens with "One Mint Julep," an energetic fusion cut featuring a strong brass section of Grover Washington, Jr. and Jon Faddis, among others. The haunting melody of "Women of Ireland" marks a turn for slower tempos, with Eddie Daniels on flute and a fine guitar solo by Eric Gale. Daniels returns with a solo on the mellow "Jamaica Farewell." Harvey Mason, Will Lee, and Gary King provide notable support throughout. James' electronic-piano playing simulates vibes on "Storm King," a number almost sunk by its very '70s-styled orchestration. But James' fans won't be disappointed by this third, fine release, and lovers of '70s fusion will definitely want THREE to round out their collections.

Three
$6.59 Though Gino Vannelli's third record didn't contain a big hit single like its predecessor, STORM AT SUNUP was a significant step forward artistically. Combining the Stevie Wonder-esque synth textures of POWERFUL PEOPLE with a complex jazz-rock fusion sound and vocal gymnastics occasionally reminiscent of Tim Buckley, ...
| | Average White Band Soul Searching CD (1976)
Three
$7.59 AWB's artistic winning streak continued with its outstanding fourth album, Soul Searching. Interestingly, this wasn't an album that enjoyed a great deal of publicity or that contained a lot of major hits. In fact, its biggest single, the dreamy "Queen of My Soul," only made it to number 21 on Billboard's R&B albums chart. But thanks to the devoted following AWB had acquired since signing with Atlantic in 1974, Soul Searching went gold. Indeed, AWB aficionados were quite receptive to first-rate material ranging from the invigorating "I'm the One" to the hauntingly romantic "A Love of Your Own." By zeroing in on their strengths -- hard-hitting funk and delightfully melodic soul -- AWB saw to it that Soul Searching was every bit as rewarding as its predecessors. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Bob James Touchdown CD (1978) Bonus Track; Remastered
Three
$9.99 With Creed Taylor no longer serving as his producer, Bob James loses something on 1978's TOUCHDOWN. James calls in a talented orchestra and some of the jazz world's best for support-Hiram Bullock, Eric Gale, Gary King, Ron Carter, Steve Gadd, Mongo Santamaria, Dave Sanborn, Hubert Laws, Earl Klugh, Jon Faddis, and Randy Brecker are among the players here-but still manages to deliver a somewhat formulaic recording. Regardless, TOUCHDOWN was among James' most successful albums.
James composed and arranged TOUCHDOWN's five tracks, and they blend together to create relaxing background music. The most famous piece here is "Angela," a song composed for the popular television series "Taxi." The title track features a tremendous alto sax solo by Dave Sanborn and is also noteworthy as the most energetic song on the album. James ...
| | Bob James Two CD (1975)
Three
$10.49 Recorded during a period when Bob James did some of his finest work, TWO is a classic mid-'70s jazz fusion album. James arranged all six tracks and conducted a cast of stellar musicians on this album including Steve Gadd, Hubert Laws, Randy Brecker and Eddie Daniels. One of the highlights is the opening cut, "Take Me to the Mardi Gras," which demands attention from the very first note. The song will even sound familiar to hip-hop fans, as James' tune was sampled many years later on RUN-DMC's ...

| | Village People Live And Sleazy CD (1979)
Three
$5.89 Live albums by studio-constructed groups are always a bit weird, but the Village People's Live and Sleazy (possibly the greatest title for a live album, ever) is an entity unto itself. Released in 1979, just after the group's popularity peaked but before the downfall began, the album captures the group running through their best known songs "live" in concert -- much of this was doctored in the studio, after the fact. There's no improvisation or new arrangements here, but there's a different feel -- it's over-the-top and ridiculous and if you have somehow missed the group's not-quite-hidden gayness, well there's no chance of it here. It's not really the way to hear Village Poeple, but fans of kitsch and disco will find this an irresistable artifact. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
With a title like Live and Sleazy, there's not much else too say -- after ...
| | Johnny Dodds Blue Clarinet Stomp CD (1990)
Three
$15.75 A French RCA double LP from the late '70s had the complete Johnny Dodds on Victor, 30 selections in all. This single CD just has 21 of the performances, leaving out most alternates and a few other numbers. A good introductory set to the recordings of the great New Orleans clarinetist (but sure to frustrate veteran collectors and completists), this set features the masterful Dodds with a ...
