| | Ian Brown Greatest Hits CD Ian Brown Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
Personnel: Dave McCracken (programming). Audio Mixer: Steve Fitzmaurice. Arranger: James Lavelle. This 2005 best-of compilation skims the cream from Ian Brown's first four solo albums, effectively summarizing the brightest moments by the former Stone Roses frontman. The collection is a welcome one (as the original releases can be a bit uneven), and GREATEST HITS proves that the singer-songwriter has plenty of gems under his belt. The neo-psychedelic flourishes, groovy dance beats, meandering melodies, and layered productions that listeners associate with the Roses are present here, and the best songs equal the work of that legendary band. Yet the material has a distinctive feel that reflects Brown's personal sensibility, making GREATEST HITS the most representative sample of his talents. Greatest Hits
$12.59 This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Sonic Youth: Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley, Thurston Moore, Jim O'Rourke. Picking up where Murray Street's languid experimentalism left off, Sonic Youth's somewhat awkwardly named Sonic Nurse shows that the band still sounds revitalized, and may have even tapped into a more fruitful creative streak than they did on their previous album. Anyone who has stuck with Sonic Youth this long knows more or less what to expect from them, but the group still has the potential to surprise; one of Sonic Nurse's biggest surprises is the return of Kim Gordon. She had ...
| | Stellastarr Harmonies For The Haunted CD (2005)
Greatest Hits
$8.25 stellastarr*: Shawn Christensen (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar); Michael Jurin (vocals, guitar, baritone guitar, sampler); Amanda Tannen (vocals, bass instrument); Arthur Kremer (piano, keyboards, drums, percussion). Almost two years to the day have passed since stellastarr*'s eponymous debut won over the hearts of hipsters and nostalgia addicts with their audio smoothie of everything '80s and '90s. During this time Interpol released Antics, and there was no doubt that stellastarr* was quietly lurking in the background, scribbling notes about song arrangements ...

Iron & Wine: Joey Burns, John Convertino, Paul Niehaus, Sam Beam, Martin Wenk, Jacob Valenzuela, Volker Zander. Additional personnel: Natalie Wyants, Salvador Duran (vocals); Craig Schumacher, Nick Luca. Musical collaborations can be a dicey proposition. The blending of two styles and sounds can lead to the cancellation of the aspects of each that make them interesting and unique in the first place, which in turn leads to an inferior record. Iron & Wine and Calexico decided to tempt fate and hook up in 2004 and In the Reins is the result. The record manages to blend the best aspects of the two groups and comes off a winner in all respects. You get Iron & Wine's melodicism, ...

| | Morley Seen CD (2008) Import
Greatest Hits
$16.29 Personnel: Morley (guitars, background vocals); Larry Campbell (guitars, pedal steel guitar, mandolin); Robin Macatangay, John Andrews (guitars); Dave Eggar (cello); Marc Carey (keyboards); Fred Cash (bass guitar); Rocky Bryant, Shawn Pelton (drums); Daniel Sadownick (percussion); Etienne Stadwijk. Additional personnel: Leni Stern (guitar); Gil Goldstein (accordion); Peter Applebaum (saxophone); Antoine Dye (trumpet); Richard Bona (bass guitar); Audrey Martella, Keith Fluitt (background vocals). British pop singer Morley is expertly balanced between Feist's modern take on the singer-songwriter tradition and the U.K. neo-R&B explosion typified by Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and Adele. Possessing a smoky, attractive voice that at times recalls Joan Armatrading, Morley favors low-key grooves over vocal histrionics or aggressive hooks, but the craft of tracks like "Places I've Never Been" and "Somebody New" is undeniable. Seen, the third album from New York singer/songwriter Morley, is one of those rare cases where familiar elements -- contemporary folk-soul and jazz, Americana, adult pop and rock -- are far more than their genres suggest. While her previous records had elements of what is on display here, they didn't come close to this wealth. Produced by Jay Newland and Jean-Philippe Allard, and co-produced by the artist, the set features 14 songs either written or co-written by Morley. Her list of collaborators includes former Bob Dylan sideman Larry Campbell on guitars and pedal steel, bassist Fred Cash, guitarist Robin Macatangay, and drummers Shawn Pelton and Rocky Bryant to name a few, and her guest list includes guitarist Leni Stern, saxophonist Peter Apfelbaum, bassist Richard Bona, and accordionist Gil Goldstein. But Morley's gifts are merely underscored by her partners here; it's her songs that hold the real depth of her gift. There are a number of love songs here, such as the sad waltz "Somebody New" that, thanks in part to the pedal steel, kisses the backdrop of country music's golden years without sounding in the least bit nostalgic. It's simply the best frame for Morley 's words and aching meld of jazz phrasing in her big throaty contralto, open-hearted desire, and unselfconscious (and non-self-pitying) loneliness: "...I'm on the front lines doing what I'm told/Paying my dues in the valley of the soul." These words come from the mouth -- and heart -- of one who has been "seen" by her lost beloved, and her new invisibility reveals the ...
