A far superior effort to Sloan's scattershot debut, 1994's Twice Removed is a clever and varied collection of smart and catchy pop songs. Without the grunge-era production that smothered some of the best songs on Smeared, the sparkling wit of the lyrics and catchy directness of the melodies shine through. All four members write and sing, which accounts for the variation between songs like the punkish opener, "Penpals," and the chiming guitars and "ba-ba-ba" chorus of the sublime "People of the Sky," the highest of the album's high points. Other goodies include the puckish media slam "I Hate My Generation" and the dreamy, largely acoustic closer, "I Can Feel It," with its harmonies by Jale's Jennifer Pierce. Not everything works quite so well -- the seven-minute "Before I Do" is at least two and a half minutes too long -- but Twice Removed was the first indication that Sloan was more than Canada's answer to the Lemonheads. ~ Stewart Mason

Sloan Twice Removed Songs Twice Removed Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) The Beatles mate with Throwing Muses? First, my credentials: a hard rock lover. So why this review of a power pop album? Because despite the 1960’s sound they craftily update and refine, despite the fine vocal harmonies that rival pop-super-deities like ABBA (although in a masculine way, of course), and despite their artful use of sparkly piano, Sloan ROCK. (Besides, lighter rock like this is better to wake to than my favorite bands, Garbage and the Donnas, who, despite all their magnificence, taste better when served in my Walkman after the coffee has had its chance to erode my usual morning stupor.) Sloan’s chunky delivery of power pop is not unlike that of Throwing Muses (another of my faves), although it’s certainly less indie and more mainstream. This album might be what you’d get if the Monkees and Beatles reincarnated through some 22nd Century DNA manipulation, then listened to The Muses’ LIMBO and Real Ramona for three months straight, and then took over a studio to combine it all into an experimental throwback stew. Twice Removed rocks reasonably well from the get go, but its best tunes are ‘People of the Sky’ (a gem), ‘Loosens’ (a slower, moodier piano-gem), ‘Snowsuit Sound’ (the album’s best guitar cruncher), ‘I Hate My Generation’ (sadly amusing), ‘Worried Now’, and ‘Shame Shame’. ‘Penpals’ is decent too, but these lads seem to prefer to open their CD’s with tunes that are slightly less arresting than the songs that follow and ‘Penpals’ is no exception to this tendency. ‘Deeper Than Beauty’ and ‘I Can Feel It’ are simply too saccharine to please me—they grate on my rocker’s ears. Still, there’s plenty of excellence here. To me, four stars means ‘worth owning’, and this fine record is certainly that. Submitted by Nicholas (Port Townsend, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Twice Removed songs
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins ...

| | Scott Walker Early Years CD (2005)
Twice Removed album
$10.49 Latter-day fans of Scott Walker, the enigmatic pop auteur, are unlikely to take great interest in his early recordings as Scott Engel, the paint-by-numbers teen idol. Comparable to the mild pop/rock of Ricky Nelson, Walker's early efforts produced no hits and are remembered mainly because of his later fame as a solo artist and a member of the Walker Brothers. His best-known cuts from this era come from his debut Orbit single, "The Livin' End" b/w "Good for Nothin'," which have appeared on a few anthologies of early rock & roll. Exhibiting a tougher approach than most of his subsequent Orbit singles, "The Livin' End" also boasts a curious composer credit: Rod McKuen and Henry Mancini. Collectors of '50s rock & roll will be much more interested in Walker's Scott Engel sides since he recorded a few Johnny Burnette songs and performed ably in the teen idol vein. The Early Years compiles 18 of Walker/Engel's Orbit recordings, encompassing a few rockers, some ballads, and some straight pop music. A few months after Acrobat released The Early Years in England, Empire Musicwerks ...
