Twilight: Imperial (vocals, bass guitar); Hildolf (vocals). Only Southern Lord would have the balls to nurture and support this album: a confluence of American black metal's most radical composers, working under the single heading of Twilight. Frankly, it's amazing this five-headed hydra (consisting of the normally self-sufficient demons behind cult favorites Xasthur, Krieg, Nachtmystium, Draguar, Leviathan, and Lurker of Chalice) didn't simply self-combust, Norwegian church-like, in a blaze of Satanic glory; but, no, they managed to connive their dark artistry into nine tracks and a wide range of black metal sub-strains visited herewith. These range from the impenetrably dissonant, Blut Aus Nord-like barrage of "Woe Is the Contagion," to the conversely zombie-paced advance of "Larval Liaise" and the tortuously unending, gothic-tinged "Winter Before," to the relatively more "traditional," high-speed but still melody-inflected Scandinavian blueprint exercised in "White Fire Under Black Text," "Hopeless Etheride," and "Swollen Voices in Silence." All of these are characterized by intentionally lo-fi production and recording standards for that authentic, old-school Venom/Sarcofago/Darkthrone feel, dig? Occasional, ghostly background synths, in fact, are as digitally advanced and sophisticated as these analog-worshipping sessions get, as their primal thrust remains locked in on raw guitars, bass, and drums, and animalistic grunts and ragged screams for vocals. With not a dull moment to be had from start to finish, dishonorable mention also goes to "Exact Agony, Take Life" (with its oddly swing-dancing back-and-forth riffs), "As the March of Worms" (which unexpectedly transforms from a storming assault into haunting layered melodies), and the final epic of majestic dread that is "Beyond Light (Beautiful and Malignant)." All told, these nihilistic nuggets foment an oppressive, claustrophobic, soul-sapping listening experience, which, like the best black metal, speaks to one's most masochistic instincts while somehow encouraging the purest form of emotional and aggressive catharsis. In sum, a new black mass for all the evil boys and girls to enjoy. ~ Eduardo RivadaviaRolling Stone (p.60) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[E]ven though individual styles emerge on different tracks, from the pulverizing to the jaunty, the end goal is the same: an unforgiving, almost asphyxiating sense of dread." Audio Mixer: Fredrik Nordström . Recording information: Studio Fredman, Gothenburg, Sweden (10/2000-11/2000). Arranger: Dimmu Borgir. In spite of straying so far from its black metal roots as to almost seem a completely different band at times, Dimmu Borgir still packs a powerful punch on Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia. New guitarist Galder (formerly of Old Man's Child) nicely infuses more traditional metallic mannerisms, but the addition of drummer Nicholas Barker (Cradle of Filth and Lock Up) is ...

| | Sunn O Black One CD (2005)
Twilight
$11.09 Personnel: Oren Ambarchi (vocals, electric guitar, horns, drums, gong). Additional personnel: Oren Ambarchi, Wrest, John Weise. Audio Mixer: Chris Townend. Recording information: Big Jesus Burger (??/2004-05/2005); Donner+Blitzen (??/2004-05/2005); Donner-Blitzen (??/2004-05/2005); Jerker House (??/2004-05/2005); The Sanctuary (??/2004-05/2005). Sunn 0))) made their reputation on drone metal descended from the work of pioneers Earth, but BLACK ONE expands their palette to include just about every experimental style they've indulged in over their career. Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson, the band's principals, have invited kindred spirits like percussionist Oren Ambarchi and Xasthur's Malefic to the banquet, and the result is as meticulously orchestrated as a symphony, albeit one constructed of darker materials. Black metal atmosphere pervades nearly every corner of the album, particularly on the epic "Bathory Erzebet," which features a harrowing Malefic performance recorded in a casket. Although claiming that Black One is the darkest Sunn 0))) album yet may be a little overzealous on their label's part (unless, of course, its meant as a not-so-subtle play on most recent predecessors White1 and 2), there's certainly a good chance that it's their most diverse. Whether that's a simple case of there being ...
| | Katharsis World Without End CD (2006)
Twilight
$10.99 Like all the bands on the French Norva Evangelicum Diaboli label (distributed in the U.S. by Southern Lord), Katharsis are from Europe and sound like it, full of progressive elements -- no, not prog rock. Unlike the other bands on this label -- Deathspell Omega, Funeral Mist, Antaeus -- Katharsis are a squalling, in-your-face furious black metal band whose insane, hyperspeed riffing and drumming all blur together under freaked-out angular guitar leads and a vocalist who can do the growl with the best of them, but who also shrieks, howls, wails, screams, and spits out his lyrics underneath sonic effects. The guitars buzz rather than howl, like a military assault on the senses. There is plenty of the maniacal old-school aggro in this stuff, but it's been channeled through a rather unique identity. If you need proof, simply listen to the 11-minute "Vvytchdance," with its noised-out chords and buzz-saw guitar blast that barely holds its own over the commando-style drumming as the track moves through more changes than a vampire has shape-shifts. This is vomit-from-the-eyeballs music, all gory intensity, merciless attack, and brain-numbing throb. The remarkable thing is that it moves from merely insane to "these-cats-should-be-chained-up" hyperwarp. The music feels like it's all sonic chaos, but somehow manages to stay on track. Then, check the 16-minute closing title track. ...

$18.39 Switzerland's whiskey induced metal hydrid KRUGER rear its ugly head again with a new full-length album which pick up things where their first studio effort "built for speed (2003) had left them : right between a Neurosis-inspired sludgy post-HxC and the ferocious sound approach of Entombed. But the whole thing deeper and fiercer. KRUGER have gone quite a long way in several no-one-rembembers-their-name ...
