(3 Customer Reviews)
Although there are a few Traffic compilations on the market, this 2005 two-disc set, puts them to shame, with 30 essential tracks that span the British band's initial run from 1967-1974. (Core members Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi revived the Traffic name briefly in the 1990s.) From the Eastern-tinged psychedelic rock of "Paper Sun" and "Hole in My Shoe" to the R&B-leaning pop of "Something New" and the soul jam of "Dream Gerrard," all of the group's finest songs are here.
The work done between '68 and '71 is Traffic's most enduring legacy. During these years, when the ensemble wasn't breaking up or shifting personnel, they melded folk, jazz, and rock into a brilliant amalgam. The key elements of group--Winwood's plaintive vocals and melodic organ lines, Capaldi's tight drumming, and Chris Wood's dynamic woodwind embellishments--are present throughout this excellent collection, which is a must for anyone seeking a thorough overview of Traffic.
Traffic: Dave Mason (vocals, guitar, sitar, Mellotron, bass guitar, tambora); Chris Wood (vocals, flute, saxophone, organ, percussion); Steve Winwood (vocals, piano, harpsichord, organ, bass guitar, percussion); Jim Capaldi (vocals, drums, percussion); Rick Grech (violin, bass instrument); David Hood, Rosko Gee (bass instrument); Jim Gordon , Roger Hawkins (drums); Rebop Kwaku Baah (congas, bongos, timbales).
Liner Note Author: Scott Schinder.

Gold Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Traffic Gold I recently purchased this two CD set because I could tell from the cover layout that it was done by the same people who did the Cream Gold twin pack. The Cream, as well as these two CD's, have been remastered quite well. I have a MFSL gold copy of Low Spark and I think this one sounds better than the MFSL.
You should find just about all the Traffic songs you are looking for in this set, all the better know ones are here as well as a good bit of older Traffic tunes. I would recommend this set to anyone who likes Traffic, I doubt you will be dissatisfied. Submitted by Bobby (Westfield, MA, U.S.A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Buy it! I heard Traffic a couple of years ago and i knew all about Blind faith. But somehow i forgot about them(can`t understand why and how) until i bought this compilation this summer. After listening to the whole thing i was totally blown away. This is probably one of the best bands from the 60s and 70s. I just love this cd and i can`t stop listening to it. | | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Gold
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable ...
| | Fleetwood Mac CD (1975) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Gold
$12.05 With this album, years of personnel changes ended for Fleetwood Mac with the departure of guitarist Bob Welch. The remaining core of the group (Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Christine McVie) invited guitarist/vocalist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks to join, and thus began the most commercially successful period for Fleetwood Mac. With 3 strong songwriters in Nicks, Buckingham and Christine McVie, FLEETWOOD MAC was their first number-1 album.

| | Animals Retrospective CD (2004)
Gold
$13.65 Today the most recognition the Animals get is "House of the Rising Sun" being played on oldies radio, but in the mid-1960s they were a powerful part of the British Invasion, often reckoned on a par with the Beatles, the Stones, and the Who. Like those bands, the Animals had strong roots in blues and R&B, but, in their original incarnation, they stayed closer to those roots than their peers did. This definitive compilation, masterfully assembled by the ABKCO think tank of Teri Landi ...

Back before he turned everyone's idea of bass playing inside out, Jaco Pastorius spent five years on the bandstand with the Peter Graves Orchestra at Bachelors III, a swanky spot in his hometown of Ft. Lauderdale. Nearly three decades after the future star's departure in 1975, and 16 years after his brutal murder, Graves got the guys back together, christened them in their former colleague's name, and invited the most prominent bass guitarists of the early 21st century down to join them in a project dedicated to Pastorius' legacy. Throughout these polished performances, the bass parts testify to how profoundly Pastorius altered that instrument's role. Bottom line (so to speak): he gave them the option of playing from a soloist mentality and blowing all over the beat, as fast and free as any saxophonist, as long as he or she had chops and didn't subvert the groove. The guest bassists on this collection absorbed this lesson long ago. Each can scatter quick licks, some of them even faster than Pastorius himself. So why does a vague disenchantment haunt these performances? Perhaps it's because these players, great as they are, are still emulating more than discovering. Some imitate even the nuances of the Pastorius tone and phrasing, as does Richard Bona on "Punk Jazz" -- which, of course, may be a form of tribute in this context. On an opposite extreme, the light-speed, staccato hailstorm unleashed by Victor Wooten on "Teen Town" is fundamentally unmusical, focusing on the player more than the ...
| | Masabumi Kikuchi Tethered Moon: Experiencing Tosca CD (2004) (Import)
Gold
$18.05 To some of the more militant Euroclassical lovers, the very idea of approaching Giacomo Puccini's 1900 opera Tosca as avant-garde jazz is blasphemous -- the sort of thing that merits not a stiff sentence in purgatory, but eternal damnation without the possibility of parole. Period, end of story, that's all she wrote. But for pianist Masabumi Kikuchi, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Paul Motian ...
