The lovely Jaci walks a new path on LLEGAR A TI, offering this third album entirely in Spanish. She's clearly branching out to spread her message, since many of these are tunes that previously appeared in English on her self-titled effort. Set in delightful, delicate pop arrangements, these are touching songs in which Jaci shares her candid dialogues with a divine being. While each track sheds its own unique light on Jaci's beliefs, one thread runs clearly throughout: His enduring centrality in her life. Veteran producer Mark Heimermann returns yet again to lend a helping hand in the studio, which surely enhances the sense of reassured confidence permeating the recording.
"Solo Tu" is one of the many stirring ballads here, with its wafts of synthesizer and acoustic guitar and the ebb and flow of its backing choral harmonies. "Manatial De Caricias" is loads of tropi-pop fun,

Even though David Crowder is ostensibly a Christian rock artist, he's first and foremost a contemporary singer-songwriter. Accordingly, one doesn't even begin to disseminate the spiritual content of his lyrics until after fully experiencing his sonic blueprint. With help from his apparently close-knit band, he's fashioned a sound that's not far from that of David Gray. Folk-rock acoustic guitars and soulfully emotive vocals mix with burbling synthesizers and drum loops, adding a more expansive touch along the way via some wide-screen electric guitars a la the Wallflowers. Moving through ILLUMINATE, the influence of everyone from Dave Matthews to Dashboard Confessional can be felt, but only in fleeting moments before moving on to something else. Add in some substantive, faith-oriented lyrics, and you've got a band difficult to pigeonhole, but easy to like.

Although the two aren't musically alike, Neil Young and Devin Townsend follow a similar approach to making music. Young uses his hard-rocking band Crazy Horse to recharge his batteries, so that he can go off and pursue other musical areas of interest as a solo artist. And Townsend has the same setup -- returning time and time again back to "the band thing" (heavy metallists Strapping Young Lad) before tackling other styles as a solo artist. While Townsend's 2006 solo outing Synchestra does let quite a few headbanging elements slip through the metal detectors, Townsend's quirkiness continues to bubble to the surface throughout. Since Townsend first broke on the scene as a member of Steve Vai's band (1993's Sex & Religion), it's understandable that a few obviously Vai-ish bits should be detected, such as the track "Babysong." But Townsend is certainly not a one-trick pony, as evidenced by the Faith No More-ish instrumental "Vampolka" and a quartet of prog metal epics stacked side by side: "Gaia," "Pixillate," "Judgement," and "A Simple Lullaby."
