Digitally remastered by Peter Hammill and includes previously omitted tracks (on CD). Includes an extensive booklet including original artwork/credits, full newly written and researched liner notes, and rare photographs.
Originally released as a double LP, this eight-song live album makes a perfect 75-minute CD. The lineup (uncredited) was Peter Hammill on vocals, guitars, and keyboards; Nic Potter on bass; Dave Jackson on saxes and keyboards; Guy Evans on drums; and Graham Smith on violin, keyboards, and vocals. The recording quality is surprisingly good, with a close, intimate sound, which is the only way one could properly capture this band live and not have the results come out like a bunch of noise. As a title, "Vital" also accurately describes the disc, for the group presents the raw, up-close, in-your-face approach that made Van Der Graaf Generator favorites of the punk bands despite the group's prog rock origins -- between Hammill's loud, raspy vocals and his crunchy overamplified guitar, "Still Life," "Door," and "Pioneers Over C" all sound almost like punk band performances, and the medley of "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers/The Sleepwalkers" isn't much different despite the presence of a violin in there. ~ Bruce Eder
Van der Graaf Generator: Peter Hammill (vocals, guitar, piano); Graham Smith (violin); Charles Dickie (cello, electric piano, synthesizer); David Jackson (flute, saxophone); Nic Potter (bass guitar); Guy Evans (drums).

Vital: Van Der Graaf Live album
$9.19 Hatfield and the North's second LP stands as a high watermark for the prog rock associated with England's Canterbury scene and, while filled with stunning musicianship, demonstrates both the strengths and some of the weaknesses of the Hatfield style. Dave Stewart on keyboards, Phil Miller on guitar, Richard Sinclair on bass and vocals, and Pip Pyle on drums (supplemented by a few guest instrumentalists and the ever-ethereal Northettes with their "la la" backing vocals) generally show an admirable sense of restraint and, like their Canterbury peers, are careful to avoid the pomposity and bombast of better-known prog rockers of the era, such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Yes. But the Hatfields might ...
| | Gentle Giant Free Hand CD (1975) Anniversary Edition; 35th Anniversary Edition
Vital: Van Der Graaf Live CD music
$10.75 The follow-up to 1974's surprisingly well-received THE POWER & THE GLORY, Gentle Giant's FREE HAND marks the pinnacle of the British prog-rock group's international success. (Like its predecessor, it appeared on the U.S. charts.) While the band's eccentricities--complex song structures, strange vocal harmonies--are present, these tunes are framed in a slightly more pop-conscious way, as on the funky, elastic title track. ...
| | Van Der Graaf Generator H To He Who Am The Only One CD (1970) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Vital: Van Der Graaf Live music CDs
$12.19 The foreboding crawl of the Hammond organ is what made Van Der Graaf Generator one of the darkest and most engrossing of all the early progressive bands. On H to He Who Am the Only One, the brooding tones of synthesizer ...
| | Van Der Graaf Generator Pawn Hearts CD (1971) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Vital: Van Der Graaf Live songs
$12.55 Van Der Graaf Generator's third album, Pawn Hearts was also its second most popular; at one time this record was a major King Crimson cult item due to the presence of Robert Fripp on guitar, but Pawn Hearts has more to offer than that. The opening track, "Lemmings," calls to mind early Gentle Giant, with its eerie vocal passages (including harmonies) set up against extended sax, keyboard, and guitar-driven instrumental passages, and also with its weird keyboard and percussion interlude, though this band is also much more contemporary in its focus than Gentle Giant. Peter Hammill vocalizes in a more traditional way on "Man-Erg," against shimmering organ swells and Guy Evans' very expressive drumming, before the song goes off on a tangent by way of David Jackson's saxes ...

| | Carpenters Yesterday Once More CDs (1998) Remastered
Vital: Van Der Graaf Live songs
$27.05 The first of many CD compilations of Karen and Richard Carpenter's dozens of hit singles, 1985's YESTERDAY ONCE MORE contains 28 of the siblings' best songs--from their first hit, 1969's "Ticket To Ride," to their last, 1981's "Touch Me When We're Dancing." The two-CD set eschews chronological order, sequencing the songs by mood instead. As such, it's probably the most listenable of the Carpenters' compilations, serving both as a perfect introduction to the duo's best work and as a handy sampler for longtime fans. The set was remastered by Richard Carpenter in 1998 as part of a general overhaul of the Carpenters' A&M catalogue.
Out of print in the U.S.! Digitally remastered two CD compilation from the '70s Soft Rock hitmakers with different artwork than the long-deleted U.S. version. From the late '60s to the early '80s, nobody created music as lush and beautiful as The Carpenters. They were in a class by themselves with Karen's haunting and lovely voice and Richard's expert arrangements. Unlike most of their compilations, Yesterday Once More creates different moods by featuring the tracks in non-chronological order. ...
| | Mark Helias Fictionary CD (1998)
Vital: Van Der Graaf Live album
$14.05 This is a rather intriguing program, taken from a pair of Mark Helias Quartet performances at European festivals. Bassist Helias is an underrated composer, and, of his seven originals, the lyrical "Looking Up from Heaven" is one that deserves to be covered by others. Tenor saxophonist Ellery Eskelin's forceful flights contrast well ...
