Originally released as a double LP, this eight-song live album makes a perfect 75-minute CD. The lineup (uncredited) was Peter Hammill on vocals, guitars, and keyboards; Nic Potter on bass; Dave Jackson on saxes and keyboards; Guy Evans on drums; and Graham Smith on violin, keyboards, and vocals. The recording quality is surprisingly good, with a close, intimate sound, which is the only way one could properly capture this band live and not have the results come out like a bunch of noise. As a title, "Vital" also accurately describes the disc, for the group presents the raw, up-close, in-your-face approach that made Van Der Graaf Generator favorites of the punk bands despite the group's prog rock origins -- between Hammill's loud, raspy vocals and his crunchy overamplified guitar, "Still Life," "Door," and "Pioneers Over C" all sound almost like punk band performances, and the medley of "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers/The Sleepwalkers" isn't much different despite the presence of a violin in there. ~ Bruce Eder

Hatfield and the North's second LP stands as a high watermark for the prog rock associated with England's Canterbury scene and, while filled with stunning musicianship, demonstrates both the strengths and some of the weaknesses of the Hatfield style. Van Der Graaf Generator's third album, Pawn Hearts was also its second most popular; at one time this record was a major King Crimson cult item due to the presence of Robert Fripp on guitar, but Pawn Hearts has more to offer than that. The first of many CD compilations of Karen and Richard Carpenter's dozens of hit singles, 1985's YESTERDAY ONCE MORE contains 28 of the siblings' best songs--from their first hit, 1969's "Ticket To Ride," to their last, 1981's "Touch Me When We're Dancing." The two-CD set eschews chronological order, sequencing the songs by mood instead. As such, it's probably the most listenable of the Carpenters' compilations, serving both as a perfect introduction to the duo's best work and as a handy sampler for longtime fans. The set was remastered by Richard Carpenter in 1998 as part of a general overhaul of the Carpenters' A&M catalogue.
