| | Moncef Genoud Aqua CD - Import Moncef Genoud Discography of CDs
An abstract pianist with a sound and improvising style of his own, Moncef Genoud mostly performs complex yet swinging originals on his set. While most of the performances are by his trio, tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker takes a raging solo on "Aqua," sounds smooth on the complex "Mix of Keys," and is gentle on a duet with Genoud for "Lovely Vij." Of the trio numbers, most memorable are the melancholy "Out of the Blue," the use of some Keith Jarrett-type repetition on "Moncef's Mood," and an interesting transformation of John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice." Dee Dee Bridgewater drops by for the final selection, "Lush Life," which is well sung if a bit out of place. Overall, this is an intriguing set of modern jazz that is well worth exploring. ~ Scott Yanow

It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album -- his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters -- is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by someone who lives in a castle, which isn't necessarily such a bad thing: the austerity is genuine, not affected, and the cerebral nature of the album is fascinating, albeit mildly so, as this is as sleepy as it is thoughtful. And it's that thoughtfulness that does distinguish IF ON A WINTER NIGHT...; no other Christmas album exists in the head like this. It's a holiday album for people who have never wanted to hear a holiday album, let alone own one.

Coming nearly two decades into the band's long and amazingly prolific career, 1996's LIGHT USERS SYNDROME is an excellent example of The Fall's '90s work. Though unfortunately lacking the presence of Mark E. Smith's ex-wife Brix, who had briefly rejoined the band for this album's predecessor, CEREBRAL CAUSTIC, LIGHT USERS SYNDROME nevertheless maintains some of that album's guitar-pop-oriented vibe. It is a welcome return to form for the band after the more electronic releases of the early '90s. The opening "D.I.Y. Meat" is one of Smith's best songs in ages, an impassioned rant about vegetarianism and politics, while the album ending "Secession Man" slyly quotes the Kinks. LIGHT USERS SYNDROME is a worthwhile starting point for neophyte fans daunted by The Fall's prodigious output.
Light User Syndrome is The Fall's first post-Craig Scanlon album, and introduces Julia Nagle, who took over keyboards from the departing Dave Bush, and also contributes some guitar. Brix Smith and Karl Burns cover the rest of the guitar, and while Scanlon is missed, the end results work well enough. The crisp, live edge to the recording is attractive, but oddly enough, leaves a lot of space in the mix -- Mark E. Smith and Nagle's keyboards have pride of place along with Steve Hanley's bass guitar (give an ear to "Das Vulture Ans Ein Nutter-Wain"). Smith himself seems to be searching for lyrics more than once, and while he comes up with his usual collection of acid-tongued zingers, other times he seems to be making vocal noise for the sake of it -- nothing wrong with that, but still, one expects more. Though the album takes a little while to get started, when it does, the winners start coming in droves, such as the attractive Brix Smith/Mark E. Smith duet "Spinetrap," and the nervy, brisk bite of "Oleano," which sounds like an endless alarm bringing ...
