Purchase Spring CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Norah Jones Fall CD (2009)
Spring album
$14.54 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this ...

| | Brian Culbertson Modern Life CD (1995)
Spring songs
$5.95 The jazz world keeps so busy talking about the young lions on the straight-ahead side, it's easy to overlook the enormous potential of contemporary wunderkinds like keyboard whiz Brian Culbertson. The Chicago native's Long Night Out was one of last year's radio smashes, but he reaches even deeper into his vast melodic artistry for a unique perspective on Modern Life. While his success hinges on a sprightly solo synth touch and remarkably spry compositions, Culbertson's true evolution this time is in the area of subtle production textures and ...

| | Herb Alpert S.R.O. CD (1966) Remastered; Special Edition
Spring album
$9.99 By late 1966, it seemed as if every TV commercial and every pop arranger had latched onto the Herb Alpert "Ameriachi" sound -- at which point the resourceful originator of that sound began to pare it down and loosen it up a bit. S.R.O. (Standing Room Only), referring to the Tijuana Brass' string of sold-out concerts, is an accurate title, for this LP is about a seven-piece band loaded with experienced jazzers who groove and swing together to a greater degree than on their previous albums. Sure, the arrangements are very tightly knit and don't allow much room for spontaneity, but they still sound fresh and uninhibited, and Alpert often allows the flavor of jazz to come through more clearly. Indeed, two of the album's three hit singles, "The Work Song" and "Flamingo," are jazz tunes -- the former nervous and driving, the latter joyously kicking -- and the third, "Mame," gets a nifty Dixieland treatment a la Louis Armstrong, with Alpert singing one verse. The sleeping gem of the record is guitarist John Pisano's "Freight Train Joe," a wistfully evocative tune that won't quit the memory, and the mournful Alpert/Pisano/Nick Ceroli tune "For Carlos" later became Wes Montgomery's "Wind Song." Though S.R.O. only went to number two on the LP charts, Alpert's creativity and popularity were still peaking. ~ Richard S. Ginell

| | Monsieur Leroc I'm Not Young But I Need The Money CD (2006)
Spring CD music
$11.99 Sugar Hill Harlem, NYC, by way of Stuttgart Germany: Monsieur Leroc keeps his Piano in nearly the exact same place in which Duke Ellington wrote his classic "Take the A Train". The only difference being one apartment floor in the old St. Nicholas Ave. building which they both have called home. This is where the neo-soul movement of today puts on its dancing shoes. In his third release, Monsieur Leroc pleads guilty with the working class title "I'm not young, but I need the money", but the sympathy stops there. Some where between DJ Shadow, and Jamie Lidell, Leroc doodlebugs into precise form with the albums opener "Cooley McCoolsen". You quickly get the idea that Leroc just wants you to get some, or get something. "I'm not young, but I need the money" is deconstructed and reassembled by Leroc in his home studio in Harlem and also features many guest vocalists and musicians that add all new elements to what has now become a signature Monsieur Leroc sound. Guests include Josh Fischel from "Bargain Music", Los Angeles MC's: AWOL One, 2 Mex, and Radioinactive, German vocalist Lazlo Loco, and Brooklyn crooner Courtney Mace. Leroc's music has been used in such TV shows as Malcolm in the Middle, CSI Miami, and Commander in Chief. You could wonder what it would sound like if Curtis Mayfield used Pro Tools and had a penchant for Underground Hip-Hop or you could just as easily listen to the latest and greatest release from Monsieur Leroc.
A clever array of sounds permeates this outing by the inventive dancemaster Monsieur Leroc. Though not as complex as Marvin Gaye and the soul legend's unique body of production work, the artist is certainly a student of that part of the musical landscape. As far out as Parliament/Funkadelic during their wild '70s explorations -- though milder and with more manners -- a segment like "P.off" unintentionally ripples with Sly Stone musings, a little "Family Affair" bubbling under the dance beats. Courtney Mace and Bargain Josh add much to the thick, grooving undercurrent, which trances on for close to seven minutes. "Baby" is low-key Prince from the 1999 era, a good diversion found somewhere inside the 46 minutes and 38 seconds that make up I'm Not Young But I Need the Money. German dancehalls are overflowing with ...
