Purchase Live CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Rod Stewart Never A Dull Moment (Gold) CD (1972) Gold
Live album
$19.10 NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On My Mind"), and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away"). Sidling up nicely next to these heartfelt interpretations are some of Stewart's finest original songs. Teaming with spiritual brother Ron Wood, Stewart offers up the cheeky "Italian Girls" and "True Blue," a track that goes along at ...

| | Tom Waits Glitter And Doom Live CDs (2009) Digipak
Live music CDs
$13.84 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get Behind the Mule" ...

| | Daughtry Leave This Town CD (2009)
Live album
$15.45 When he was recording his debut album in 2006, Chris Daughtry didn't have the time to assemble the real rock band he so desperately wanted to have, so it appeared under the band name Daughtry without featuring any of the musicians who later became part of the group. That's not the case with LEAVE THIS TOWN, Daughtry's second record: all five members are glowering on the album cover, floating like specters over an abandoned Californian street. The five rockers serve as visual evidence that Daughtry is a band, not a person, and such reminders may be necessary because LEAVE THIS TOWN doesn't differ much in feel or form from DAUGHTRY. Overall, LEAVE THIS TOWN isn't quite as studio slick as DAUGHTRY, which was fueled by Chris Daughtry's desire prove that he belonged in the big leagues; here, he's achieved ...

Live songs
$14.29 Das Hohelied Salomos continues along the same path as Hosianna Mantra (1972), Seligpreisung (1973), and Einsjäger & Siebenjäger (1974). Collaborating with guitarist/percussionist Daniel Fichelscher and soprano Djong Yun and adapting lyrics from the Old Testament's Song of Solomon, Florian Fricke crafts deeply spiritual music from a synthesis of Eastern and Western popular, classical and devotional traditions. Fichelscher's guitar and percussion are to the fore, often eclipsing Fricke's rippling piano melodies, and Yun graces most tracks with her serene, ethereal voice. As on Einsjäger & Siebenjäger, the group works with an economical palette, combining elements to create grand arrangements with subtly shifting rhythms, tempos, and textures. Here, however, the results are all the more expansive and majestic as the minimalist strokes coalesce in sweeping, cosmic swathes, most memorably on the meditative interludes "Du Sohn Davids I" and "In den Nächten auf den Gassen I," with its oceanic, mantric ebb and flow. With contributions from Alois Gromer (sitar) and Shana Kumar (tabla), Das Hohelied Salomos recovers some of the Eastern accent that was more evident on Hosianna Mantra and Seligpreisung: the standout in that regard is the lilting "Der Winter Ist Vorbei," which sets Yun's vocals amid Gromer and Kumar's hypnotic grooves. Elsewhere, there's a more seamless cultural hybrid: for instance, on "Steh auf, Zieh Mich Dir Nach," which gradually gathers momentum with Fricke's piano arpeggios and Fichelscher's rich, bluesy playing. That rock dimension is most emphatic on the closing "Du Tränke Mich mit Deinen Küssen," another track that builds slowly around layered, interweaving guitars. Das Hohelied Salomos encapsulates Fricke's gift for blending aspects of Western rock music's traditionally profane idiom with non-Western and non-rock aesthetics to pursue his unique vision of sacred music. ~ Wilson Neate
Simply put, 70s Progressives is a Popol Vuh compilation. Four tracks come from the soundtrack to Coeur de Verre, including the amazing "Hüter der Schwelle," which borrows a bit of the riff from the Velvet Underground's "Venus In Furs" and turns it into an electro-acoustic raga. Two others come from the lovely Agape-Agape, four others from the very rare Letzte Tage -- Letzte Nächte, and one more from Die Nacht Der Seele: Tantric Songs. The pieces, taken as they are from the mid-'70s, offer a solid look at how Florian Fricke had moved away form his initial obsession with new electronic sounds as explored on the Moog III, and embraced the trance and pulse-like qualities that electronic music offered in an acoustic setting. It also reveals how deeply Fricke began exploring instruments, tonalities, and harmonics from other world cultures. This is a seamless listening experience form front to back and is a fine introduction to Popol Vuh. ~ Thom ...
| | Bananarama Drama CD (2005) (Import) Bonus DVD; Bonus Track; Japan; Germany
Live album
$43.35 After the British dance-pop act Bananarama hit paydirt in the 1980s with a string of infectious chart hits, it seemed inevitable that they would fade into the background of pop history. That the group was still releasing records 20 years after their commercial peak is impressive enough, but even more impressive is that 2006's DRAMA has much of the same playful, exuberant punch of their early work. Though updated to keep pace with contemporary sounds, Bananarama's music still pulses with a Eurovision vibe designed for maximum dancefloor accessibility. The album also contains two new remixes of the band's hits "Venus" and "Really Saying Something."
Bananarama have had a hard road to travel since their classic years in the Stock, Aitken & Waterman camp when they were sure-thing hitmakers. Trends in pop music evolved and popular tastes shifted in other directions and the 'Rama, along with other artists, were left in the dust needing to regroup. Fast-forward through the alt rock '90s and Bananarama decided to make a comeback with Drama, eleven songs with a Europop edge designed for dancefloors and die-hard fans waiting for a potent comeback from their favorite trio (by then a duo). In some places this formula works well; in other instances it falls woefully flat. But the most painful moments come at the end, where the duo thought it would be a good idea to re-record two of their most well-known hits, "Venus" and "Really Saying Something," and have them remixed by Soft Cell's Marc Almond and Solasso, respectively. These dance mixes do not work well at all and should be avoided at all costs. So while Drama has moments of promise, ultimately it falls flat and Bananarama remain a shadow of their formerly infectious selves. Definitely for die-hard loyalists only. [Drama was also released with a bonus DVD.] ~ Rob Theakston
