Though a commercial blip in its day, Krautrock has become one of the most enduring movements in music history, with countless indie acts namedropping the genre's most famous as influences. Now, as then, Hamburg's Faust gets the least love. Revisited Records hopes to change that with this long overdue reissue of the band's classic second long-player, SO FAR. One of the worst commercial failures in the history of Virgin Records, SO FAR was a slight capitulation to the marketplace after their mellow-harshing debut: there are some hints of accessible grooves (the mesmerizing opener, "It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl") and melodicism (the Jimmy Page-ish guitar and flute of "On the Way to Adamae") to pull in the faint of heart.
Otherwise, SO FAR builds on the drastic pastiches of the first album: proto-industrial soundscapes evaporate into dreamier, layered ones and back again throughout the album's nine tracks. Faust didn't have the groove of Can, the thrust of Neu!, or the riffs of Amon Duul, but they had guts and an unsinkable sense of "anything goes." Given the success of industrial music and the uncompromising throb of the millennial American underground in places like Providence and Brooklyn, they also had a vision of the future. Essential for fans with adventurous ear drums.

| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Faust So Far
$11.99 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully ...

| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Faust So Far
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't ...

| | Rachael Sage Painting Of A Painting CD (2001)
Faust So Far
$9.89 After a few tracks into Painting of a Painting, it's clear that Rachael Sage is a product of every great contemporary female singer/songwriter. She can hit the high notes as well as Dido or Paula Cole, achieve angst like Alanis Morissette, and bring up social issues that Ani DiFranco (whom she's toured with) would admire. Sage takes cues from her male counterparts as well, dedicating her third record to the late Jeff Buckley. An all-star group of session musicians add drama to the New Yorker's already passionate grace, making tracks like "Among All of God's Creatures" and "Undertow" sound like the accompaniment to America's countryside. Lyrics from the classic hit "Ooh Child" officially close the album, only to run into a solemn hidden track. In addition to these fine musings, Sage runs her own label, paints, and designs clothing, showing that there's nothing this talented woman can't do. ~ Kenyon Hopkin
"Painting of a Painting" is the third release from New York City songwriter/ chanteuse Rachael Sage, and the follow-up to 1998's "Smashing The Serene", which garnered critical praise and charted in CMJ's Top 30 & AAA stations nationwide. A top seller on the internet, Rachael has created a big buzz online and consistently tours throughout the U.S. and Europe, hitting cities like Prague, Cologne and Berlin - in a quest to bring her music to wherever there is a passionate, listening audience.Musicians Denny Fongheiser (Tracy Chapman), Jack Petruzelli (Joan Osborne), Stephanie Winters (Paula Cole) and Joe Bonadio (Duncan Sheik) are part of a stellar line-up contributing to Sage's lush, folk-pop sound. Longtime collaborators and NY-natives Rob Curto, Ben Butler, Carol Sharar, David Rosenberg and Conrad Korsch also appear on the album, which was produced by Rachael and Emmy Award-winning composer/engineer Andy Zulla.MORE ABOUT RACHAEL...Rachael Sage is a modern day renaissance woman.
