CCM group Casting Crowns build on the powerful indie-rock sound of their first album with this 2005 follow-up. Like their self-titled debut, LIFESONG is full of declarations of Christian faith set to music that would sound right at home on MTV and mainstream rock radio. LIFESONG widens Casting Crowns' thematic palette, by mixing in attacks on hypocrisy ("Stained Glass Masquerade") and politics ("While You Were Sleeping"), and meditations on familiar parables ("Prodigal"), among the songs of straightforward praise. Add to these themes sharp, accessible arrangements and the stirring singing of lead vocalist Mark Hall and you've got a contemporary pop-rock record of substance.

I especially love how Casting Crowns isn't afraid to criticize certain political viewpoints in America today...in the song "While You Were Sleeping" they say:
"As we're sung to sleep by philosophies that save the trees and kill the children"
I don't like when certain Christian bands are too afraid to offend and prefer to stay neutral in politics. Abortion is murder, and Casting Crowns makes that clear...

ALMOST THERE is state-of-the-art worship rock from the wittily named quintet whose major label debut this is. Mercyme have an almost '80s style, and unless you listen closely to their lyrics you could mistake ALMOST THERE for something by the Alarm or a late effort by Big Country. Their popularity attests to seven years of hard work (they have half a dozen independent albums to their credit) and the burgeoning US worship music scene.

Christian rock music's detractors often cite the eternally sunny, feel-good "I'm okay, you're okay" attitude of many CCM albums as a quality antithetical to real rock & roll. While Casting Crowns certainly offer their fair share of optimistic praise, the group also takes a page from the original 1960's San Francisco Jesus Freak movement's aggressively evangelical book. The cd “AFTER THE WAR” is a product of many different influences over the years, as am I. I was a part of the AUSTIN TEXAS MUSIC SCENE from 1970 to ‘82 , having had songs cut by WILLIE NELSON; ‘HANDS ON THE WHEEL’ on Willie’s RED HEADED STRANGER ALBUM, which got a grammy nom., went GOLD, PLATINUM then DOUBLE PLATINUM and also played several of his 4th of JULY PICKNICS , recording on the LONESTAR COLUMBIA LABEL from ‘76 to ‘78 , during those wild and wooly years I also worked and traveled with JERRY JEFF WALKER. JJ cut ‘THE POT CAN’T CALL THE KETTLE BLACK’, ‘LEROY’, ‘THE FIRST SHOWBOAT ‘, ‘PASS IT ON ‘ and several others I had written in those days. I also wrote the title song to the movie “THE ELECTRIC HORSEMAN” with J Fonda and Robert Redford and played with a fellow named Roger Bartlett on the soundtrack of the ‘TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE’.
