Portastatic's Bright Ideas might just be their best record yet. Seeing as how the track record of Mac McCaughan's group is scattered with nothing but low-key gem after gem, that is high praise. It is the first full album he has released since his main band, Superchunk, went into the clichéd realm of indefinite hiatus, and while only Mac knows if any of these songs could have ended up as Superchunk songs, if they had the record they appeared on would have been hailed as a triumphant return to form. (Not that they really ever slumped anywhere except in the eyes of the indie press.) Those are really side issues though because all that really matters here is how wonderful Bright Ideas is. Broken into equal parts introspective and beautiful ballads and jumping rockers, the record is at once lively as heck and full of poetic insight. It feels like the product of a teenage heart and an adult (with kids) mind. As usual the music (as played by a core group of fellow Superchunker Jim Wilbur on bass and Matthew McCaughan on drums) is tighter than Tim Duncan on the free throw line during the NBA finals. McCaughan's vocals are pushed to the point of breaking, though he is able to apply the brakes now and then, and his lyrics are intimate, always interesting, and often hilarious. Basically everything you've come to expect from a McCaughan product but with some slight improvements. Songs like "Little Fern" and "I Wanna Know Girls" are more tender than anything McCaughan has issued while up-tempo rockers like "Through With People" and "The Soft Rewind" are as peppy and catchy as anything the Chunk ever did. Head and shoulders above everything is the awesome "Truckstop Cassettes," an elegiac tale of a love-struck and life-changing road trip set to a calmly rolling rhythm caressed by a melancholy violin, acoustic guitars and bass, cheap keyboards, and Mac's sweet-as-cherry-pie vocals. When his best songs are rounded up, it will be right up near the front with the likes of "Driveway to Driveway," "My Noise," and "Hello Hawk." The simple fact that Mac continues to release solid albums after so many years of writing and recording is impressive. That he is still releasing records as sparkling, emotionally involving, and memorable as Bright Ideas is nothing short of miraculous. ~ Tim Sendra

| | Beulah Yoko CD (2003)
Bright Ideas CD music
$12.39 Even in the context of the jangly, jubilant Elephant 6, Beulah plied a particularly lush, orchestral kitchen-sink brand of lo-fi indie pop. YOKO was recorded in 2003 as a majority of the band's six members were going through divorce or separation, and a sense of sorrow pervades the album. The gathering tension (which would ultimately dissolve the band shortly after the album's release) led to the San Francisco band's most restrained--even reflective--record. There's still the occasional flourish, the carnival-esque swirl of the insanely ...
| | Minus 5 I Don't Know Who I Am CD (2003) Let The War Against Music
Bright Ideas music CDs
$13.85 Although Scott McCaughey pays his bills as a loyal R.E.M. sideman, the longtime Young Fresh Fellows frontman's Minus 5 project has allowed him to explore his fundamental pop/rock leanings with colleague Peter Buck on albums like 2001's acclaimed Let the War Against Music Begin. Recorded in tandem with that set, I Don't Know Who I Am -- a limited-edition disc reportedly restricted to a pressing of just 2,000 copies -- is far darker and more experimental, as evidenced by the set launcher, "There Is No Music." Meshing a slide guitar with a brooding lo-fi feel, the song's alt-country leanings uneasily shift into the electronic-tinged "Myrna ...

$14.69 | | Johnny Mercer Jubilee Shows, Vol. 10: Nos. 56 & 61 CD (2005)
Bright Ideas music CDs
$20.95 The tenth CD in this series, as with its nine predecessors, has two complete Jubilee radio programs. With Ernest "Bubbles" Whitman as the MC (and showing off his ability to read jivey tongue twisters with ease and good humor), the shows, made for black servicemen who were mostly stationed overseas, are overflowing with talent. No. 56 has the obscure Noble Sissle Orchestra as the house band, being featured on "Skater's Waltz"; backing several singers; and showcasing its pianist, Harry Brooks, on "Blues in the Night." High points of the show are two numbers ("C Jam Blues" and "I Got Rhythm") featuring clarinetist Barney Bigard in a quintet with the Cootie Williams-influenced trumpeter Red Mack. Also featured along the way are singers Dorothy Webster, Edna Webster (who doubles on trumpet), Phil Moore (on his own "Shoo Shoo Baby," which is given a wistful treatment), and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who is in excellent on "That's All." $38.09 | | 2 Bit Pie Islands CD (2006)
Bright Ideas songs
$14.29 One of the myriad of bands who owe as much to Depeche Mode as to the Chemical Brothers or even Paul Van Dyk, 2 Bit Pie (whose founders and main members, Jonathan Fugler and Mike Bryant are also part of the British techno outfit Fluke) combine driving beats with dark guitar grooves and Fugler's voice into catchy alternative dance that can work as well in Manchester as in New York. The lyrics, as is often the case in electronica, deal vaguely with general ideas of life and love and the planets and flying away, and are pretty forgettable because of this, turning the vocals into as much of another musical layer as any of the various synthesizers that are also employed, adding to the overall aesthetic. While most of 2 Pie Island stays in the realm of sinister beats with rock-based guitar lines, 2 Bit Pie also explore their trashy dance side in "Nobody Never," industrial in "Pil," and even creepy Delerium-esque opera-techno in "Soto Mundo." Fugler's voice works surprisingly well over all of these (though it is Dilshani Weerasinghe who adds her soprano to "Soto Mundo"), moving from a low whisper to anthemic bursts that would make Bono proud, and the songs on the album, thanks to their haunting beats and ...
