"Nothing Remains" takes harmonic cues from Scandinavian black metal, delivering horror-movie-worthy chord progressions with a speed and drive equal to the most mind-numbing industrial beats. "Left for Dead" opens with military-style snare drum rudiments before bursting into a scathing denunciation of greed that recalls early Metallica. Though Chimaira's electronic elements are more subtle than on previous albums, well-placed sound effects add to the record's intense spookiness, particularly on the epic seven-and-a-half minute closer "Lazarus," a chilling, yet strangely sensitive, narrative about a friend's suicide.
The follow-up to the hit album THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF REASON, Chimaira's self-titled third CD continues the group's quest to become the most pummeling, no-frills, downright scary metalcore band on the planet. With the addition of new drummer Kevin Talley, who adds an even greater degree of rhythmic precision and aggression, Chimaira further refines its unique combination of old-school thrash and modern death metal. Chimaira
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood ...

| | Lamb Of God Ashes Of The Wake CD (2004)
Chimaira
$8.99 Frontman Randy Blythe howls with a voice reminiscent of Venom's Kronos, as he rants about finding salvation in vice ("The Faded Line") and organized crime's code of honor ("Omerta"). Fueled by the double-kick-drum ferocity of skin-basher Chris Adler, guitarists Mark Morton and Willie Adler lay down a two-pronged attack that falls somewhere between the pummeling assault of classic American thrash and the more melodic and orchestral complexity of European metal. Anyone doubting Adler and Morton's chops need listen no further than the gnarly instrumental title cut, which finds Lamb of God's axe-wielders forming a musical relay team with guest guitarists Alex Skolnick (Testament) and Chris Poland (Megadeth) amid interview sound-bites of soldiers serving in Iraq. ASHES OF THE ...
| | Soilwork Stabbing The Drama CD (2005) Bonus Tracks; Limited Edition; Digipak
Chimaira
$11.49 Sweden's Soilwork have walked the heavy metal high-wire throughout their short but prolific career. Extreme enough to convince some of the genre's more suspicious fans of their authenticity to the cause, they've also excelled at flirting with its more mainstream sensibilities, and, like every release before it, 2005's Stabbing the Drama is no different. Like a hyper-efficient assembly line, its songs connect components of the band's hometown melodic death metal to elements of neo-thrash velocity, to metalcore's innate simplicity, to even -- gasp! -- sketchy nu-metal devices (see "Weapon of Vanity," "Distance") in order to construct a well-lubricated driving machine that's ever compact and economical. Needless to say, it's this very economy that will have more adventurous metalheads prematurely dismissing fine songs like "One With the Flies," "The Crest Fallen" and "Observation Slave" as simply "too commercial," or worse, "too American"! But, their unquestionable hooks and irresistible immediacy will likewise manage to effortlessly seduce hordes upon hordes of listeners who are either none the wiser, or, better yet, have little concern ...
| | Primer 55 New Release CD (2001)
Chimaira
$9.15 If Primer 55's debut, Introduction to Mayhem, proved to be something of a glorified demo (it was later picked up by Island-Def Jam, re-mixed, re-mastered, and re-released with a handful of bonus tracks), the band's sophomore release, The New Release shows the quartet taking a giant quantum leap forward. Differences between the two works are like night and day. Boasting a terrific production courtesy of hot up-and-coming New York producer Eddie Wohl, New Release is bursting with well-executed hard rock ditties that easily crush anything on the band's debut. In a clichd rock & roll sense, and for all intensive purposes, this is a brand new band -- and one that has certainly found it niche. A wash of guitars, augmented by ex-Helmet drummer John Stanier's guesting behind the drum kit, give way to Jason's razor-blade gargling-like voice that wouldn't be out of place in any number of New York hardcore bands. Seamlessly, blending the classic hard rock sound of "This Life" with hints of the more commercial attack of "Texas" with the C.O.C/Helmet riffage of "Tricycle" (which features layers of sounds, including, of all things, bongos), it's clear that the band has no intention of being pigeon-held as just another run-of-the-mill blood and guts hard rock band. "Pills" showcases Primer's rhythmic approach, jumping from a hardcore type arrangement into a straight chorus that rewards the listener with each repeated listen. "Lou Evil" proves to be one of the album's more interesting novelty pieces. Sandwiched between horns and an arrangement that recalls some of Clutch's finer moments, Primer 55 shows that they're not afraid to experiment with different sounds and textures. Overall, a refreshing follow-up to an average debut, and hopefully one that garners the band ...

| | Rivka Simmons Creating Calm In Your Life: A Guided Meditation And Stress Reduction CD CD (2003)
Chimaira
$18.99 In contrast to most CDs where the meditations last 30-45 minutes or more, Creating Calm In Your Life: A Guided Meditation and Stress Reduction CD is unique in that it contains 4 short, easy-to-do, 15-minute meditations: two mindfulness meditations, a progressive muscle relaxation and a body scan meditation. It's ideal for busy people looking for an easy way to incorporate meditation and relaxation into their lives. Listeners say that Rivka's soft and soothing voice gently guides them to deep stillness and calm. It's a perfect introduction for beginners and a great gift for anyone in need of relaxation. Yoga Journal, February 2005"Rivka Simmons ... has obviously done her homework, providing clear instructions and adding new insights that breathe life into each of these stress-relief (meditations). She's particularly interesting in getting us out of our heads and helping us give up some of the rigid self-control that's the source of so much everyday tension. With her soothing voice and empathetic approach, she does indeed create an atmosphere of calm." Midwest Record Recap, May 2005“Simmons cuts tot the chase with her guided meditations that take the listener to the safety of the eye of the storm while waiting for it to pass. It’s always a nice find when you find a practitioner that can pull this off without hitting you over the head to get you where they thing you should be. Simmons qualifies as a winner. A smart set smart cookies ought to check out before they crumble.”The Critical Review, June 2005”This CD was unique...Ms. Simmons is crystal clear in her narratives...a very well-performed spoken word track.”The Sun News, June 2005“I’ve used similar materials but this one was the easiest to respond to. The voice is just right...It is easy ...

| | Helloween Master Of The Rings CD (1994) (Import) Bonus CD; Japan
Chimaira
$43.09 During Helloween's up-and-down recording career, fans learned to expect the unexpected. The band's songwriting and musical/thematic commitment could not always be relied upon, and the depths to which Helloween could sink were never more obvious than during the mid-'90s. During this period, the band most notoriously dumped two absolute clunkers (the ludicrously titled Pink Bubbles Go Ape and the mellowed-out Chameleon) on a large and unsuspecting metal fan base. The combined failure of these two records prompted the departure of longtime vocalist Michael Kiske and a strategic retreat by the remaining members of the group. While 1996's The Time of the Oath is generally considered the real Helloween comeback record, Master of the Rings (released a year previously) marked the actual return to metal form. "Perfect Gentleman" (the best of four singles taken from Master of the Rings) is a melodic metal highlight, as are "Where the Rain Grows" and "The Game Is On." New vocalist Andi Deris displays ...
