Released by the taste-making Sub Pop label in 2005, INFINIHEART is a compilation of Canadian singer/songwriter Chad Van Gaalen's 2001-2003 bedroom recordings. Although there is a spare quality to some of these tracks, this is by no means an easily classifiable lo-fi outing. In fact, amidst gentle, quirky, acoustic meanderings that showcase his fragile, high-pitched voice, Van Gaalen delves into organic electronica that wouldn't sound out of place on a Four Tet album. An eclectic performer with a surprisingly wide sonic palate, Van Gaalen reveals a promising talent here.

WHY DO BIRDS SING? (1991) features many of the elements that made the first pair of Violent Femmes records so great--and even includes several songs written at the same time as the songs on those albums. "American Music" opens, one of singer/guitarist Gordon Gano's best songs and an ode to, well, American music, it highlights call and response vocals punctuated by clapping. "Out the Window" is a showcase for Gano's archetypal choppy acoustic guitar playing, which in this case is grafted onto a bizarrely cheerful song about suicide.
