| | John Vanderslice Pixel Revolt Soundtrack CD
San Francisco singer/songwriter/producer John Vanderslice sticks to his anything-goes indie-pop sound on 2005's ambitious PIXEL REVOLT, a record that reportedly began as a concept album about the war in Iraq, but evolved into a much more personal project. As always, the plaintive-voiced Vanderslice employs unusual arrangements and a wide variety of instrumentation (including mellotron, Moog, glockenspiel, and an array of electronics), with the distinctive cello-playing of Erik Friedlander featured on a number of tracks. Although Vanderslice's reach can exceed his grasp, he's a fascinating performer who never fails to turn out intriguing work, and PIXEL REVOLT is no exception.

This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made.
Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records ...

$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade ...

$13.69 The Decemberists' third full-length release takes the fanciful lyrical subjects and defiantly non-rock musical tendencies of CASTAWAYS AND CUT-OUTS and HER MAJESTY THE DECEMBERISTS and infuses them with the more muscular and electric sound of the 2003 mini-concept album, THE TAIN. The combination provides singer/songwriter Colin Meloy and crew with their first true masterpiece, an album that not only fulfills, but exceeds, the promise of their earlier records.
Meloy's pet obsessions with historical romance and the sea get their due, culminating in the ...
