Salim Nourallah's Beautiful Noise is another pleasantly simple and pretty singer/songwriter album by an artist with a firm grasp on how to craft memorable tunes and how to produce them simply without ever being boring. Many who try to walk this fine line end up failing miserably. Nourallah always delivers the right amount of pop and emotion throughout. His low-key croon of a voice is perfectly suited to the calm and richly arranged tunes; he never oversells his melodies and is unfailingly honest and intimate. On this album, unlike on Polaroid, the songs that connect the best are the mid-tempo and balladic songs like "Never Say Never," "The Apartment," "First Love," "Slowly Gently Softly," and "Life in a Split Second." The production values have been raised here, the strings, electric pianos, and glitzy synths see to it that the slower songs are adorned with all kinds of sonic beauty that helps the feeling of calm melancholy grow stronger on each play of the record. That's not to say that the up-tempo songs are weak. Far from it, as "The World Is Full of People Who Want to Hurt You," "Sunday Morning," and "Montreal" demonstrate. Nourallah just seems to give the ballads more attention on the album. Now it is up to listeners to give the album more attention. It deserves it and might be one of the best singer/songwriter/rocker albums you will hear anytime soon. ~ Tim Sendra

With this return after an eight-year hiatus, Oklahoma singer-songwriter J.J. Cale serves up thirteen crisp new songs.
On his first studio outing in eight years, the mythical Okie troubadour turns in a solid set of his trademark dusty blues tunes. What is not so typical, as with Travel Log from 1990, is that Cale steeps himself in technology and evokes the moods and frameworks of music that intersect with the blues or stand in opposition to them. The keyboards, drum loops, and horns on this record are as pervasive as the guitars. Needless to say, this requires an attitude adjustment on the part of the listener. This is not to say there aren't plenty of live musicians here; there are. It's just that the sheeny beats and clean synth lines feel odd when ...

These two albums, recorded in 1967 and 1968, are the cornerstone of the Red Krayola legend and two of the most famous records in avant-garde '60s rock. Originally released on Lelan Rogers' fabled International Artists label (home to the 13th Floor Elevators and Bubble Puppy, among others), these albums are uncompromisingly weird artifacts that move right beyond psychedelic into "freakishly strange." Parable of Arable Land is the better-known of the two, having been recorded in a legendary one-day session where the core band (including singer/guitarist Mayo Thompson, bassist Steve Cunningham, and drummer Rick Barthelme, who would later gain considerably more fame as novelist Frederick Barthelme) invited a group of fellow travelers, including the Elevators' Roky Erickson, into the studio to record the "Freeform Freakouts" which appear between the proper songs. Of those songs, the almost punky "Hurricane Fighter Plane," with a squalling organ solo by Erickson, and the plain freaky "Pink Stainless Tail" are the highlights, but the whole thing is a sonic onslaught that makes Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, its nearest point of comparison, sound downright normal. God Bless the Red Krayola and All Who Sail With It, recorded as a simple trio with new drummer Tommy Smith, is a much more straightforward album, and it's actually better than its more renowned predecessor. The 20 tracks, ranging from the four second (no kidding) "Listen to This" to the comparatively expansive "Green of My Pants," which just barely breaks the three-minute barrier, are simple enough that the utter weirdness of Thompson's lyrics really shines through. Surprisingly enough, some of the songs are downright catchy; the opening "Say Hello to Jamie Jones" moves along on a hushed Thompson vocal and a perky Cunningham bassline, sounding for all the world like a post-punk experiment from late-'70s London. This double CD, with better sound than the later Collectables single discs, is the best way to discover the Red Krayola; the merely curious may want to end their search here as well. ~ Stewart Mason
