| | Jungle Brothers Straight Out The Jungle CD (1988)
Doin' Damage CD music
$11.05 Although outdistanced in popularity and sales by contemporaries and kindred spirits De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest, the Jungle Brothers were equally important in ushering in a bold, innovative new movement in hip-hop. In an era when rap's early pioneers were fading and gangsta rap had yet to leave the getto full force, the Jungle Brothers helped establish the Native Tongues collective and, subsequently, a style of hip-hop that would come to define the Golden Age. Cuts like "Jimbrowski" and the title track are classics and perfectly illustrate the Jbeez's mix of jazz-inflected grooves, politically conscious lyrics, Afrocentricity, and a keen sense of fun.
An independent release (on a dance label no less), STRAIGHT OUT THE JUNGLE suffered a bit from lack of exposure, and its lo-fi production has, unfortunately, worked against the album over time. But none of this should dull the impact of the strides made here. The JBeez's were among the first to use jazz samples, James Brown riffs, club beats (see "I'll House You"), and other elements that later became common currency in the genre, to say nothing of their dexterous and highly intelligent ...

| | Fried Glass Onions: Memphis Meets The Beatles CD (2005)
Doin' Damage album
$12.95 Performers Include Daddy Mack Orr, John Kilzer, Lamarr Sorrento & The Mod Saints, Kelvin Page.
Memphis musicians recognized the elasticity of Beatles material early on, with Otis Redding tackling "Day Tripper," for instance, and Booker T. & the MG's deconstructing and reassembling the entire Abbey Road album as an instrumental collage on their impressive McLemore Avenue album, while Memphis bands like Big Star used Beatlesque guitars and vocals to state their own vision. Fried Glass Onions is a noble attempt to let some contemporary Memphis musicians try their hand at interpreting the Beatles, and the result is always interesting, if not always striking. The problem with covering Beatles' songs is always this: The group's original version continually plays in the back of the listener's mind as a template, and few artists have a chance at bettering it. While the music here is impeccably recorded, and the songs are certainly fun to hear in these new settings, only a few of them actually transcend the original versions. The ones that do, though, are gems. Daddy Mack Orr recasts "Get Back" (which is perhaps the Beatles song that sounded most Memphis to begin with) as a slow, burning North Mississippi blues, complete with slide guitars and some smoldering harmonica work from Billy Gibson, and the song somehow emerges as both more ominous and more insistent. "You're Gonna Lose That Girl," sung by veteran soul singer Bertram Brown, uses that smooth, relentless Hi Records groove to create what sounds like a lost Al Green single, and opens up the rhythmic possibilities only hinted at in the Beatles' version. Guitarist Lamar Sorrento, accompanied by his band, the Mod Saints, turns in a slash and burn instrumental take on "A Hard Day's Night" that crackles with sharpness and energy, effectively drawing and expanding on the driving dynamics of the original. In all, Fried Glass Onions has a fun yet reverent feel, and if most of the covers here fail to chase the original Beatles version from your head, well, that probably wouldn't necessarily be a good thing anyway. One can only dream of what might have come out of a planned Beatles recording session at Memphis' famed Stax studios, a session that unfortunately never came to fruition. ~ Steve Leggett
Fried Glass Onions—Memphis Meets The Beatles is a celebration of The Beatles and of the city that greatly inspired and influenced them. This CD includes both the familiar and the not-so-familiar material from the vast catalogue of original songs by the Beatles. Most of these interpretations have a definitive, identifiable Memphis twist. Daddy Mack Orr’s “Get Back” is a stripped-down, blues rendition, while Bob Simon & Eddie Harrison’s “Two Of Us” sounds like vintage Sam & Dave from the Stax Records era. Most of these versions are either R&B or soul infused, although funk treatments of “The One After 909” and “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window” take the groove a little deeper. Speaking of groove, the Memphis All-Stars’ version of “Drive My Car” is absolutely unstoppable and demonstrates the ...

| | Stevie Wonder Time To Love CDs (2005) Import; + Bonus CD
Doin' Damage songs
$37.25 On his first studio album since 1995's CONVERSATION PIECE, R&B legend Stevie Wonder revisits familiar ground from earlier eras in his career while keeping with contemporary pop sounds. Although certain tracks conjure up the vibe of early Wonder outings (the funky "Please Don't Hurt My Baby" and the sunny, upbeat "Positivity," which features additional vocals by his daughter Aisha Morris), other tunes (the smooth "From the Bottom of My Heart" and the romantic "Passionate Raindrops") recall his more polished '80s period.
A TIME 2 LOVE is bookended by two of its strongest songs--"If Your Love Cannot Be Moved," an urgent duet with gospel singer Kim Burrell, and the potent title track, which features neo-soul diva India ...
