Having quickly made a name for themselves on the Canadian club circuit, Coney Hatch signed with fledgling Anthem Records in early 1981 and proceeded to record their freshman effort with no other than legendary singer/songwriter (and label boss) Kim Mitchell acting as producer. Not too shabby. In an era when rock radio thrived on a steady diet of Boston, Journey, and Foreigner (vocalist Carl Dixon drew comparisons to a less strident Lou Gramm, fused with a certain Joe Lynn Turner vibe), the foursome's commercial brand of hard rock seemed like perfect fodder for the airwaves. But forceful rockers like "Devil's Deck," "You Ain't Got Me," and "Victim of Rock" never connected with programmers outside their homeland, perhaps because they fit in so well with the current musical climate that it was impossible to distinguish them from the pack. To wit, "Where I Draw the Line" was an effective but rather formulaic power ballad, and their highest-charting domestic single, "Hey Operator," didn't even dent the charts south of the border. Still, nothing here really stinks except for bassist Andy Curran's turns at the mic, when he leads the group through plodding throwaways like "Stand Up" and "Monkey Bars." Ultimately their most successful album, Coney Hatch would eventually earn a gold sales award in Canada. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Special Collector's Edition of the album originally released in 1981 by the Canadian four-piece named after a mental institution in North London. Trying to take a more twisted approach to rock than their American big hair counterparts. with rolling riffs and off-kilter melodies, and produced by legendary Canadian artist Kim Mitchell, this release features three previously unreleased bonus tracks from the original sessions, has been completely remastered and contains a 16 page booklet with new photos, extensive memorabilia and a 4.000 word essay written by Howard Johnson. Esquire sported a sound that represented the buoyant side of progressive rock, and with Chris Squire's wife singing lead, the band resembled Renaissance in their airy but stable musical approach. With their 1987 debut album, Charles Olins keeps the tracks flowing with his fluent keyboard activities, and guitarist Pat Thrall, most notably of Asia fame, pinches in with some arousing string work that evens out the synthesizer. The second LP from Gamma, an unlikely hard rock group on Elektra Records, features future Robin Trower vocalist Davey Pattison doing his best to sound like Bad Company during Paul Rodgers' "Rock & Roll Fantasy" period. With Jim Alcivar on synthesizer and Denny Carmassi on drums, you have a goodly portion of the band Montrose, since the guitarist/producer is the guiding hand behind this project. "Skin and Bone" might as well be Bad Company, while the cover of Thunderclap Newman's "Something in the Air" misses the mark slightly. The revolutionary theme of that great tune from the film The Strawberry Statement gets lost in the translation and doesn't have Pete Townshend's clever production. With a relatively successful debut under their belts, Coney Hatch returned to the studio in 1983 to start work on their next album with renowned hard rock producer Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne, Loudness). But to be perfectly honest, in terms of production value, Outa Hand was virtually identical to its predecessor, and, if anything, Norman only helped the band perfect their most obvious radio contenders at the expense of the album as a whole. The results include excellent lead-off single, "First Time for Everything" (one of the most memorable of their career), and arguably their finest hard rocker, "Don't Say Make Me," which, despite its silly macho lyrics, for once shows no hesitation on the band's part to just rock out.
