COMPLETE UPPSALA CONCERT features nine energetic live tracks from an Eric Dolphy 1961 concert in Sweden.
This two-CD set features the remarkable Eric Dolphy (tripling on alto, bass clarinet, and flute) during a concert in Sweden. Accompanied by an obscure but talented rhythm section (pianist Rony Johansson, bassist Kurt Lindgren, and drummer Rune Carlsson), Dolphy really stretches out on five of the seven numbers, particularly during a 2O and-a-half minute version of his blues "245." Other highlights include "Laura" (featuring Dolphy unaccompanied on alto), "Bag's Groove" (his only recording of that piece), and "I'll Remember April." With the exception of "245," all of the songs are bop standards, but Eric Dolphy's improvisations are typically unpredictable and adventurous. The recording quality is decent, making this a good set to get after acquiring Dolphy's better-known sessions. ~ Scott Yanow
2 CD set. One of the legendary multi-reed instrumentalist's most inspired concerts, this edition contains Eric Dolphy's complete Uppsala Concert, recorded in Uppsala, Sweden on September 4, 1961. The performance features Dolphy's longest recorded improvisation ever, a 13 minute solo on his composition '245'. The concert also features an alto-sax solo on David Raskin's tasteful tune Laura. Dolphy is backed by pianist Rony Johansson, bassist Kurt Lindgren and drummer Rune Carlsson for a night of unforgettable music. Gambit Records. 2005.
Personnel: Eric Dolphy (flute, bass clarinet, alto saxophone); Rony Johansson (piano); Rune Carlsson (drums).

| | Booker Ervin Tex Book Tenor CD (2005)
Complete Uppsala Concert music CDs
$10.25 Tex Book Tenor was recorded in 1968 as a follow-up to Booker Ervin's debut date for Blue Note, The In Between, which was released in January of the same year. (Ervin had made two records for Pacific Jazz, which is now owned, like Blue Note, by EMI.) The album remained unreleased until 1976, when it was issued with an also unreleased Horace Parlan date on a double LP called Back from the Gig. This is its first appearance on CD. The lineup is stellar and includes Billy Higgins, Woody Shaw, Kenny Barron, and bassist Jan Arnet from Czechoslovakia. Barron and Ervin had worked together before, and Arnet had worked with Ervin three years earlier as a touring partner in Germany. The music here includes three Ervin originals, Barron's wonderful "Gichi," and Shaw's "In a Capricornian Way." The Afro-Latin-influenced grooves of "Gichi" display Ervin playing his solo in prime ...
| | Andrew Hill Andrew! CD (1964) Bonus Tracks
Complete Uppsala Concert songs
$9.69 ANDREW! finds the avant-garde composer and pianist Andrew Hill following up his landmark 1964 LP, POINT OF DEPARTURE, with a more flowing quintet session, featuring the estimable vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and Sun Ra tenor saxophonist John Gilmore (in a rare appearance outside of the Arkestra). This is the Blue Note sound of the '60s at its best, cutting edge yet beautifully produced with room enough for full, exploratory improvisations by all concerned. Hutcherson in particular provides a warm, fluent foil to Hill's more abstract conceptions, and Gilmore's bright tone and energetically structured solos bring even more fire to the mix. Andrew Hill remained somewhat underrated throughout his career, but few musicians of the time possessed his special intellectual integrity, the mark of a true composer. ANDREW! captures him in a peak period.

| | Kix Cool Kids CD (1983)
Complete Uppsala Concert music CDs
$5.95 This 1983 album pushes Kix in a more new wave direction than their hard-rocking debut outing. On this surface, Cool Kids might seem like a commercialized cash grab: it contains a handful of tracks penned by hired guns like Nick Gilder and Holly Knight and also adds a layer of new wave-styled synthesizer shadings to Kix's pop-metal sound. However, this impression is soon revealed to be wrong as soon as the album is spun because the outside song contributions fit neatly in with the group's own songs and the sonic embellishments enhance the group's sound instead of watering it down. The standouts among the outside contributions are the title track, which blends new wave verses driven by staccato guitar lines with a hard-rocking, ...
| | Guitar Tribute To The Beatles: Come Together CD (1993)
Complete Uppsala Concert songs
$13.79 Strictly speaking, this isn't just a guitar tribute to the Beatles, although stringed instruments that are plucked, strummed, and otherwise manipulated are in abundance, representing styles and sounds that will recall Django Reinhardt at one moment and the Mahavishnu Orchestra at the next. Toots Thielemans adds some astonishingly tasteful harmonica (and whistling) to "Yesterday" and Thomas Dawson's organ is almost a lead instrument on "Come Together." But it's the guitars (plus some superb bass) that make up the core of this delightful recording. Larry Coryell, Steve Khan, Ralph Towner, Adrian Belew, John Abercrombie, Allan Holdsworth, Toninho Horta (whose Brazilian-flavored rendition of "She's Leaving Home" is worth the price of admission by itself), and others do what they do best, and the results are revelatory and dazzlingly entertaining. This reviewer's favorite cut was ...

| | Erik Hinds Khonsay CD (2003)
Complete Uppsala Concert CD music
$10.15 Erik Hinds likes to keep his albums short and sweet. Khonsay has a running time of only 33 minutes, but it packs a lot of material and musicians. The three pieces have been written for various combinations of the Georgia Guitar Quartet and the SS Puft Quartet. The short "Coronach" starts off the set with a delicate guitar sextet (Kyle Dawkins, Brian Smith, Phil Snyder, and Jason Solomon of the Georgia Guitar Quartet, joined by SS Puft's Colin Bragg and Hinds). "Diorama Octet" calls for all members of both groups. Complex and thoroughly scored, the piece in four movements draws from avant-garde jazz, folk, new complexity, and a touch of the spirit of the South, while showing off Hinds' arranging skills. The charm of its themes is overshadowed at first by the display of virtuosity, but repeated listens give them a chance to impregnate the mind. "Individuation Suite" occupies a hefty 24 minutes of the disc. Written for SS Puft (Hinds, Bragg, trumpeter Jeff Crouch, and drummer Blake Helton), it more prominently features ...
