Buy it! Mine dropped on the mat yesterday morning. I have not had time to listen to all of them but I have spun From The Hip twice, as it is one of my favourite albums.
Frank's time away from the buisness did not see him idol in any way. The production remastering on this is just phenominal. The songs are fresh and lifted, if only all remasters sounded like this!
Babylon Revisited starts with that familiar locomotive rythmn that gets your feet tapping and winds into a clean guitar solo that always felt a little stifled on the previous recording. The solo cuts big time!
On I'm Ready the vocals are head and shoulders above the music and Franks firey guitar run in the middle has been given some depth.
How Long, again the vocals have been lifted to the appropriate range, in order to compliment the instraments. Having said that the instrumentation does take a slight background role in this track, except for the precussion which is constantly in the forefront on every track.
Rise Above one of my favourite tracks on the album, is given the full treatment here. I thought it was impossible to improve on perfection, but heres the living proof. This song a great mood piece that rises and falls, takes you up and down on a roller coaster ride of emotions (sorry guys but I do like this track). I switched immediatly to the German SVP recoding of the cd (which is not a patch on the jap lp import) and it has a life less dull sound.
Mine All Mine the whole of the album has a much bigger sound about it and this track is no exception, vocals guitar and precussion all lifted tone wise and complimented.
Ride My Own Wave the guitar takes center stage in the mix (quite rightly so in my opinion) standing head and shoulders above the rest.
Stand the song as with all of them has an exciting "new life" breathed into it. It's crisp defined and toned to the ear, you can pick out every instrument from the band, Vince's rythmn guitar shining through, you can actually hear it.
The Wall Came Down another fantastic mood piece and I couldn't resist switching back to the German import of this one, just to compair it. There is a Timpany/church bell B3 organ sound that comes in at the end of each verse, it's so clean. Frank has talked about adding a B3 to the line up, that really would be the icing on the cake to hear this reproduced live, with Sister Change, Juggernaut etc.
Hingston Nights This as Frank said is a tune that was jammed out at the relavant point in time. Don't expect Poppy 2 (sorry Lori) I have listened to it 5 times now and still can't make my mind up on a proper description, as it has a bit of everything. I won't spoil it for you all and go into great detail but it's one of those tunes that anyone could be listening to and they would not know it was Frank Marino (excluding us of course)but they would be comfortably at home with it. Another one that makes you unintentionally move your leg up and down like you have a bad case of nervous tension. It is definatly a "jazzy thang"
In summary I know I don't need to tell you all to go and buy it, because you will anyway. All three, the best $35.00 you could spend this side of Xmas.
Thanks for your concerted efforts Frank, bring on the rest!

| | Michael Thomason Ridin The Night Train CD (2006)
From The Hip music CDs
$17.69 If you think you’ve heard all there is to say about heartbreak and life on the road, chances are you haven’t listened to Santa Rosa resident singer/songwriter/bandleader Michael Thomason. His straight-from-the-hip songs about loneliness, betrayal and good love gone bad put a new spin on eternal country themes in a resounding twang that proudly displays the influences of Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams and Elvis. On his latest CD, “Ridin’ the Night Train”, Thomason brings the emotional essence of life’s hard knocks into sharp focus, with spare lyrics rendered in an unsentimental voice that says, “This is how it really happened.” Stylistically, the CD covers a lot of ground. It includes ballads, breakneck 12-bar shuffles, accordion-laced Norteño, a nod to Hank Williams, as well as ...
| | Bill Evans Plays Banjo CD (2001)
From The Hip songs
$17.09 This set finds legendary pianist Bill Evans exploring a novel setting (at least compared to his straight jazz trio recordings of the `60s). Backed by a large orchestra, Evans takes on a repertoire of movie themes and instrumental pop fare, including "Days of Wine and Roses," "The Man With the Golden Arm," "Laura," and "On Broadway."
Arranger Claus Ogerman provides the arrangements, which are more accessible by commercial standards than pure post-bop, but Evans never sounds like he's pandering or playing down. Instead, he plays with his trademark elegance against Ogerman's lush, string-sweetened backdrops. The result is a light but thoroughly enjoyable Evans outing.
Bill Evans has created an instrumental masterpiece and the only problem is that the title "Bill Evans Plays Banjo," is only half the story.Plenty of pickers play banjo, and play it well, but very few can compose with the range, depth, beauty and creativity of Evans. His 1996 album, "Native & Fine," was stunning for similar reasons.Evans manages to compose and play music that is readily embraced by traditionalists, ...
