Walking Down Rainhill music CDs
$14.39 "She Makes Me Want to Sing," the opening track on Jerry Douglass's Best Kept Secret is nothing short of a shock to the system. For starters, Douglass's trademark dobro sound isn't present until nearly a minute in. Second there are twin dirty slide guitars by Keith Sewell and Derek Trucks' (Allman Brothers Band) wailing atop of a fat, fat ugly, nasty bass. It's a hard nasty boogie jam that could be on a Canned Heat album. Whoa. Some sanity returns as Sam Bush and Bela Fleck trade fours with Douglas on "Whose Your Uncle, where progressive stomping bluegrass ...

| | Sting Brand New Day CD (1999)
Walking Down Rainhill music CDs
$12.59 BRAND NEW DAY won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album. "Brand New Day" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Performance.
BRAND NEW DAY continues Sting's sophisticated approach toward pop music as he once again collaborates with ace musicians on material that knows no cultural or stylistic boundaries. Not surprisingly, the tantric guru chooses love as the theme for this eclectic collection of songs.
Sting's cross-cultural forays range from a collaboration with Algerian singing sensation Cheb Mami on the Ofra Haza-meets-William Orbit "Desert Rose" to the bossa nova-influenced "Big Lie Small World." There's a jazz patina throughout--guest trumpeter Chris Botti emulates Miles Davis on the coffee-house hip-bop of "Perfect Love...Gone Wrong" and long-time friend Branford Marsalis adds mournful clarinet to the sumptuous string arrangements of the noirish "Tomorrow We'll See," a song about a weary prostitute straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. ...
| | Oh, No! It's Devo/Freedom Of Choice CD (1994) Import
Walking Down Rainhill songs
$10.49 One of the first (and oddest) of America's new wave bands to break into the mainstream, Devo combined electronic, musical, and philosophical quirks and inspired daffiness, hitting big with the single "Whip It." This set packages original albums FREEDOM OF CHOICE from 1980 and OH NO! IT'S DEVO from 1982 together on one handy disc.
Virgin combined two of Devo's early-'80s albums, Oh, No! It's Devo and Freedom of Choice, on one disc. Freedom of Choice, arguably Devo's strongest musical effort, revolves around relationships, insecurity, and the lack of flexibility in the American psyche. Their arrangements achieve an effective balance between guitars and synths, and the band's highly stylized visual component, this time featuring flowerpot-shaped "energy dome" hats, paid off in the video for "Whip It." The single went gold and helped the album sell over a million copies. Just barely less essential than Q: Are We Not Men?. However, by the point of 1982's Oh, No! It's Devo, much of the band's endearing quirkiness had evaporated. Their sound here was not all that distinguishable from other new wave groups, and apart from a few songs, such as "That's Good" and "Peek-a-Boo," they simply weren't as musically or lyrically interesting as ...

Walking Down Rainhill CD music
$19.99 Like volume one, this is a high-grade assortment of hits, all but one by American artists, from the five years or so following the Beatles' invasion of the United States (though a couple of the tracks are from 1963). If there's one thing that might keep some listeners from lavishing unrestrained praise on this collection, it's that there's no real theme other than they were all, or virtually all, big hits and all pretty good. (You can't even say that the theme is American pop and rock, due to the inclusion of the Zombies' "Time of the Season.") Naturally, part of what makes rock and '60s rock in particular interesting is its diversity, and this 29-song anthology covers a lot of bases. Among them are folk-rock (the Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man"), blue-eyed soul (the Rascals' "Good Lovin'," the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'"), Motown (Martha & the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street"), psychedelia (the Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love"), hard rock (Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride"), hot rod (Jan & Dean's "Little Old Lady from Pasadena"), and garage rock (the Syndicate of Sound's "Little Girl," the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie"). Plus there's good old pop/rock in the Turtles, one-shots like John Fred's "Judy in Disguise" and the Newbeats' "Bread & Butter," and even a little non-rock in Mongo Santamaria's "Watermelon Man" and Lalo Schifrin's "Mission: Impossible." Nothing here's real rare; even the few low-charting items, like Jerry Jeff Walker's original version of "Mr. Bojangles" and the Gants' cover of "Road ...
| | Dave Rave Valentino's Pirates CD (1989)
Walking Down Rainhill music CDs
$14.79 Even if only as the answer to a fascinating trivia question ("What was the first North American album released exclusively by a post-Soviet state?"), the position of Valentino's Pirates in the annals of pop music history would be secure. The album, however, far exceeds footnote status; in fact, on its musical merits, it demands and deserves acknowledgement as one of the most accomplished pop albums of the 20th century's final two decades, on a par with masterworks by eccentric peers like the Go-Betweens, XTC, Crowded House, and Guided by Voices. On this matter, at least, Russia was right. That the record wasn't even released in the United States at the time of its creation seems incomprehensible and, retroactively, speaks ill of the tastes and trends of the nation's recording industry. To M'Lou's definitive CD reissue of Valentino's Pirates, however, goes a long way toward purging that particular original sin. It brings home, with absolute clarity, the undiminished supremacy of the Dave Rave Conspiracy's landmark debut. In shaping the album, Dave Rave and Gary Pig Gold were very consciously bridging the gap between Rave's artistic past and an increasingly sophisticated vision that was in part the converse of that past. One cannot always hear the bridge here, but the gap being crossed is well apparent. The album opens with the brittle, somber elegy "Father Be Brave," and it introduces the dark undertone that resurfaces throughout and, ...
