Crosscurrent album
$13.05 It's hardly surprising that this Hawaiian-born ukulele master so impressed Béla Fleck that the jazz-banjo great had Jake Shimabukuro not only open concerts, but also record with the Flecktones. Just as Fleck revolutionized the way musicians and fans heard the banjo, Shimabukuro -- in 2002, he was the first uke player from Hawaii to sign with Epic Records International -- takes his instrument out of the traditional Don Ho gentle-pluck realm and into an explosive multi-genre landscape. Rock/fusion aficionados will love the snappy intensity of Dragon's rumbling opening jam, "Shake It Up!," which pits his lightning quick, flamenco-flavored runs over crackling electric guitar and feisty programming. This frenetic track may prepare the listener for a chops-heavy project, but it's clear that Shimabukuro is equally interested in strong melodies and harmonies, and stylistic variety. The title track, inspired by longtime hero Bruce Lee, has a more traditional Asian flavor, complemented with symphonic synth washes which add a tasty mix of beauty and drama. Aside from his versatile playing, the collection's strength lies in its unpredictability from track to track. So while the laid-back "Circle of Friends" would be comfortable amongst any of smooth jazz guitarist Marc Antoine's best works, "3rd Stream" is exotic, percussive jazz designed as a bubbly ...

| | Jake Shimabukuro Sunday Morning CD (2005)
Crosscurrent album
$13.05 Shimabukuro is the undisputed master of the new school of ukulele playing today, one of the few people capable of pleasing both the traditionalists and the avant-garde within his genre. Thanks to this, and his stunning virtuosity on the instrument, there's been a fair amount of press about his versatility and abilities in general. This album, by itself, shows what the press is about. Despite the sonic limitations of the ukulele's small body and string count, he casually starts out with smooth jazz and some Paganini (one of his specialties), most of which is done with minimal accompaniment. After making Celine Dion's piece de resistance enjoyable for people outside the adult contemporary crowd, he quickly turns his attention to fitting the ukulele ...

Crosscurrent CD music

| | Mick Harvey Intoxicated Man CD (1995)
Crosscurrent music CDs
$10.65 INTOXICATED MAN is an album of cover versions of Serge Gainsbourg songs.
Longtime Birthday Party and Bad Seeds gloom merchant Mick Harvey teams up with Anita Lane for an entire album's worth of Serge Gainsbourg covers, and the results are surprisingly pleasant. INTOXICATED MAN boasts 16 English-language renditions of Gainsbourg's late-'60s repertoire, including "Bonnie & Clyde," "Lemon Incest," and "69 Erotic Year," as well as the title cut.
Harvey's treatment of the French pop star's material is reverent and completely devoid of the cheeky irony that one might ...

| | Venom MMV CDs (2005) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Box Set
Crosscurrent album
$43.75 Released to coincide with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal legend's 25th anniversary, MMV lovingly reconstructs Venom's long and twisted road from obscurity to underground legend through four discs packed to the goat horns with outtakes, demos, radio spots, interviews, and good old-fashioned black metal. Compiled by singer/bassist Conrad Lant, better known to fans as Cronos, MMV lays to waste any notion that the band -- and its ever-revolving door of members -- was riding the coattails of contemporaries like Judas Priest, Motörhead, and Black Sabbath. Their influence on the emerging thrash and death metal scenes spawned groups like Slayer and Metallica (the latter is billed as the opening act on a reproduction of an included early-'80s tour poster), but it was their adherence to the dark side that set them apart from imitators. Cronos once described Ozzy Osbourne as a man who would "sing about evil things and dark figures, then spoil it all by going 'Oh ...

| | Slade In For A Penny - Rave CD (2007)
Crosscurrent music CDs
$9.19 The tracks, nary a clunker among them, reveal a band that could do far more than raise fists and hack the English language, although they were no slouches in those regards either. Early gems like "Shape of Things to Come" and "C'mon C'mon" show that Slade could hang with AC/DC and the MC5 in terms of primitive energy and power, while the trippy "Wonderin' Y" demonstrates a surprising tender side. Naturally, boogie stomps such as "Don't Blame Me" and "Do We Still Do It" are all over the place and nobody does them better. This comp is the ideal place to feel Slade's awesome "noize."
Neither a best-of nor a rarities comp, Slade's IN FOR A PENNY: RAVES & FAVES collects deep album cuts and b-sides from the band's '70s heyday. ...
