But there is also a degree of sophistication in the driving, deeply layered mix, with Audio Bullys using house music as a palette to blend nearly everything under the sun amidst a confrontational fearlessness. Whether stomping and aggressive or swirling and textured, GENERATION is a feast for the ears, and should be of interest to fans of British dance and underground hip-hop circa the mid 2000s.
Mixing contemporary club music with ample doses of hip-hop, dub, disco, ska, and punk, Britain's Audio Bullys are one of the more interesting and distinctive electronica acts on the scene. Their name is no misnomer; there is a healthy dose of snotty hooliganism here, rendered in both the duo's brash collage of elements and Simon Franks's heavily accented vocals.
Audio Bullys: Tom Dinsdale, Simon Franks.

Generation album
$8.39 With the group's 1980 debut, I JUST CAN'T STOP IT, the English Beat single-handedly defined the high-spirited ska revival sound that later gained immense popularity in the late '90s. I JUST CAN'T STOP IT was a massively influential album that has aged better than anything recorded by contemporaries like the Specials and the Selecter. Unlike the more traditional Jamaican-flavored ska sounds offered by those bands, the English Beat was not afraid to acknowledge its pop and punk influences.
I JUST CAN'T STOP IT features 14 songs that range from a moving, ...
| | Sufjan Stevens Illinois CD (2005)
Generation CD music
$12.19 The second entry from sui generis singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens in his absurdly ambitious project to make a record for every state in America outdistances even 2003's superb GREETINGS FROM MICHIGAN in scope and beauty. A sweeping paean to the Lincoln state, ILLINOIS weaves together history, personal confession, and detail-filled scenarios with chamber folk, expansive orchestral pop, and back-porch pastoral settings for a stunningly progressive indie gem that sound like Brian Wilson, Stereolab, and Neil Young holding hands in heaven.
Remarkably, in its intricate, gorgeously crafted surfaces, ILLINOIS lives up to its aims. In addition to its symphonic grandeur, the album also showcases Stevens's heartland folk, and some of the album's most shimmering moments are its most spare. "John Wayne Gacy, Jr.," for instance, is an absorbing narrative that features ...
| | Custom Robo Arena Nintendo DS 1-2 Players
Generation music CDs
$33.65 In the not-too-distant future, mankind relies on tiny, telepathically controlled robots to perform such dangerous tasks as deep-sea research, disaster relief and interplanetary exploration. These popular and easily customized "Robos" also form the favorite sport of tomorrow: battling in the holographic arenas called "holosseums." Now that criminals have taken to using these mighty miniature machines as weapons, the Custom Robo phenomenon has grown into a problem for the whole of society.
Nintendo finally brings the Custom Robo series to the DS. Players pit their Custom Robos against one another in fast-paced, ...

| | Rza Birth Of A Prince CD (2003)
Generation music CDs
$11.49 Robert Diggs seems to birth a new alias with every day, fitting for someone as overflowing with rhymes, beats, ideas, and influences as the man most commonly known as the RZA. His music exists in a world akin to the Chinese kung-fu movies he loves--dark, ever-raining, with violence lurking around any given corner. The RZA's unpredictable career has ranged from fueling the Wu-Tang Clan's oddly fantastic audio odysseys to crafting backgrounds for wildly fanciful films by iconoclasts such as Jim Jarmusch and Quentin Tarantino.
BIRTH OF A PRINCE is just as intoxicatingly exceptional as the RZA's previous work would suggest, as likely to borrow from 1940s torch songs as from '70s funk, and as likely to reference Faye Dunaway and ...
| | Xavier Rudd Solace CD (2004) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan; Enhanced CD
Generation songs
$38.09 This is the Japanese issue of Xavier Rudd's SOLACE featuring remastered sound, a deluxe LP-replica slipcase, and original artwork.
Imagine if Devendra Banhart wasn't trying so hard to be a psychedelic pixie, or if Tyrannosaurus Rex-era Marc Bolan had somehow been reincarnated into the body of Jack Johnson or John Mayer. Either way, you'll come up with something close to the intriguingly bizarre debut album by Australia's Xavier Rudd. As a songwriter, Rudd is a spiritual brother to Johnson and Mayer, not to mention the Brits Ed Harcourt and David Gray: A mellow singer/songwriter throwback to the good old days of James Taylor and Cat Stevens, with an additional fondness for reggae that leads him to introduce island rhythms into his songs and cover Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry." As a singer, however, Rudd possesses this kind of man-child squeak of a voice that's so startling to the listener at first that you'll spend at least half of the rambling opening track, "Shelter," trying to gauge whether or not it's a put-on. The disconnect between the otherwise standard-issue and if anything slightly colorless songs and Rudd's bizarre warble of a voice is immense, and it may well be a deal-breaker for many listeners, but those who accustom themselves to it might find Solace a compelling listen. ~ Stewart Mason
