If you're a member of a massively popular jam band, what's the first thing you do when your group folds? If you're former Phish bassist Mike Gordon, you team up with legendary guitarist Leo Kottke. The resulting album, SIXTY SIX STEPS, plays to the strengths of both performers, with Gordon mining some of the same quirky territory as his earlier solo outing, and Kottke contributing his unmistakable deft acoustic-guitar work.
While both artists (who also collaborated on 2002's CLONE) offer up self-penned tunes and occasional vocals, the duo also tackles a few well-selected covers, including a Ry Cooder-like take on Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green-penned "Oh Well" and a charmingly spare rendition of Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion." The record's focus is, of course, on the interplay between Kottke and Gordon, but its secret weapon is drummer Neil Symonette, who unveils a remarkably dynamic array of percussion, utilizing everything from talking drums to finger cymbals to a Jack Daniel's jug. While SIXTY SIX STEPS should definitely appeal to Gordon/Phish fans, it also highlights the formidable talents of Kottke, who may receive a deservedly wider audience with this thoroughly engaging release.
Personnel: Leo Kottke (vocals, guitar); Mike Gordon (vocals, electric guitar, saz, bass guitar); Neil Symonette (drums, percussion).

Leo Kottke Sixty Six Steps Songs Sixty Six Steps Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Kottke rejuvenated by Phish's Gordon This CD is the best thing Leo Kottke has been involved with in a few years. Kottke and Gordon's work together has gelled (not that Clone was bad, but this is better). Opening with a version of "Living in the Country", the trio (drummer, too)deliver a re-vitalized classic. Also included are Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" and Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well". Submitted by jsm305 (Marshall, MN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Leo Don't Need Mike Gordon/Big Stink Bomb Here It puzzles me that Leo keeps teaming up with Mike Gordon who holds absolutely no creditability with me. They are both on the opposite sides of any music spectrum here. Leo does best when he is totally and completely solo. He needs to get back to his growling/organic 12 string guitar roots of his 1969 "6 & 12 String Guitar" LP/CD. This cd, sorry Leo you know I love your awesome 12 string guitar playing, but this one is a big STINK BOMB. Dump Gordon and you're on your way. I rest my case. Submitted by Johnny (Muskegon, MI.) Truly Great Musicians These two are at it again. Guitar great Leo Kottke and Phish bassist Mike Gordon have teamed up to follow their first collaboration “Clone.” Their new one, “Sixty Six Steps” is an eclectic and exciting mix of impeccable musicianship. Filled with inventive original pieces as well as visionary interpretations of songs like Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion” this album is definitely a piece of work that cannot be passed over. $11.99 WORLD WITHOUT TEARS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Righteously" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Though it's ultimately a less balladic, more stylistically varied album than its dreamy predecessor ESSENCE, WORLD WITHOUT TEARS starts out with a slow-burning, reverb-drenched ballad, but then takes a sharp turn into sensual lyricism, pounding drums, and churning guitar on "Righteously." ...
