This double feature offers two inspired pairings of shockmeister Roger Corman and the quintessentially sinister Vincent Price in moody adaptations of the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe.
In THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, hopeful Phillip (Mark Damon) rides up to the crumbling Usher estate to pick up his betrothed, Madeline (Myrna Fahey), and is coldly received by her brother, Roderick (Price). A most unwilling host, Roderick suffers from "morbid acuteness of the senses" and is convinced their family lineage--and the very house itself--is cursed by the evil deeds of their forebears. He is sworn to do everything in his power to keep his sister from leaving with Phillip--even burying her alive--to stop her from continuing their damned lineage. "King of the Bs" Corman got permission from his producers to make this, his first film in color and with a recognizable star, for the same price as two of his usual black-and-white films. The result was a smash hit with critics and audiences, and Corman made seven more. This is still one of the best, with a comparatively restrained performance by Price, good set design and photography, and eerie music by the legendary Les Baxter.

The basis for the 2000 film starring Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie, 1974's GONE IN 60 SECONDS is a revered cult classic, mostly because of the delirious 40 minute car chase that concludes the film. Directed by its star, writer, producer, and stunt driver H.B. Halicki, GONE IN 60 SECONDS was a drive-in phenomenon when it was originally released. In it, Maindrian Pace and a group of his colleagues race to steal 48 specific makes and models of cars in a week, which will net them $250,000 if they succeed. However, the group runs into trouble trying to jack a 1973 Mach 1 Mustang, and Pace ends up being chased through seven counties by throngs of police in what is probably the most exciting and ambitious car chase ever filmed.

Zombie movies slip in and out of fashion, but it's always a special occasion when the man who helped turn the undead into a worldwide phenomenon decides to add an installment to his ongoing saga of flesh-eating films. George A. Romero's zombie movies have all appeared in different decades, beginning with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD in 1968, DAWN OF THE DEAD in '78, and DAY OF THE DEAD in '85. Romero skipped the '90s, but a zombie renaissance in the early 21st century (28 DAYS LATER, SHAUN OF THE DEAD) finds him back in the directors chair.
Often seen as allegories for their times, Romero's films have been connected to societal events such as the consumerism of the '70s (DAWN OF THE DEAD) and the spread of the AIDS virus in the '80s (DAY OF THE DEAD).
