Bob Florence is known primarily as a bandleader, composer/arranger, and jazz educator, so his occasional solo piano dates are an added bonus. During this session, he salutes various musicians and singers with whom he has worked, along with a number of composers or players whose work he appreciates. Florence segues from one song (or a medley of songs) to the next by utilizing interludes improvised from excerpts of "Just Friends" and "Wind Beneath My Wings," resulting in a stunning, beautiful suite. Florence wrote and performed the haunting "My Sunshine Connection" for trumpeter Ingrid Jensen's wedding, while his original "Jools" (a marvelous, lush ballad honoring Julie Andrews, who Florence accompanied on a number of tours) is combined in a medley with a dreamy interpretation of "Come Rain or Come Shine." The pairing of Bronislaw Kaper's "Invitation" and "On Green Dolphin Street" within a medley is a bit unusual, but even more so are Florence's slow, introspective arrangements of these pieces. At times, his scoring of "Invitation" seems to show the influence of Erik Satie, while he eschews the rapid-fire tempos preferred by many pianists for "On Green Dolphin Street." This beautifully crafted recording is easily one of Bob Florence's greatest achievements. ~ Ken Dryden

JazzTimes (p.109) - "Florence is alone at the piano, ruminating over some of his favorite songs. His choices become a single, long, softly luminous unfolding, songs melding from one to another..." Friends, Treasures, Heroes Music Friends, Treasures, Heroes Songs Friends, Treasures, Heroes Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Veteran composer/bandleader salutes his idols In his second solo piano recording, veteran composer/arranger/bandleader Bob Florence pays loving tributes to his many musical friends and idols. Employing the standard "Just Friends" and the 1990 hit "Wind Beneath My Wings" much as Mussorgsky used the Promenade in his Pictures at an Exhibition (which was also a solo piano opus in its original setting), Florence explores the music of film composers Bronislau Kaper, Dave Grusin, and Johnny Mandel, plus classic songwriters Jerome Kern and Harold Arlen (the latter in a tribute to Julie Andrews, for whom Florence served as musical director on television and in concert).
The 73-year-old pianist also provides dedications to two of the leading ladies of contemporary jazz: the Canadian-born trumpeter Ingrid Jensen (in an original inspired by Johnny Mandel's "Close Enough for Love") and the Grammy-winning bandleader/composer/arranger Maria Schneider, in whose trumpet section Ms. Jensen has played. As a series of intimate musical portraits (including one of Florence himself), "Friends, Treasures, and Heroes" is not to be missed! Friends, Treasures, Heroes album
$13.39 With renewed focus on the late singer Bobby Darin in 2004, due in part to the making of a film biography starring Kevin Spacey, the timing became ripe for a musical tribute album to him as well. Pianist Roger Kellaway served as Darin's musical director between 1967 and 1968. He got to know him very well and recognized him as more than just an ambitious singer continuously in search of a hit, as many critics labeled him at that time. Darin often had in mind what ...

Friends, Treasures, Heroes CD music
$16.65 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. ...

Friends, Treasures, Heroes songs
$11.15 Rolla is:Fuzz - Vocals, guitarsCarrie - Vocals, guitarsDavis Shuman - bass Marc Balling - Drums/ PercussionThe Rolla Story:And to think, he almost didn't make the gig...Call it fate, call it a coincidence, call it a series of fortunate events, but three years, two records, and one wedding later, Rolla can only call it their good luck that Fuzz's booking agent forgot to cancel what would prove to be a most fateful gig. It was a cold December night in Burlington, Vermont. Fuzz (Tom Tom Club, Deep BananaBlackout) made the show at Nectar's, and it was there he met his future wife, bandmate and soulmate, Carrie Ernst, a newly local singer-songwriter who remembered Fuzz from his earlier bands. She decided to say hello... The chemistry was undeniable, and that night the two stayed up 'til sunrise talking and playing songs to one another.Their live debut together was as spontaneous as their meeting, during an acoustic set by Fuzz supporting Dickey Betts (Allman Brothers Band). Encouraged by a warm audience response (and as an excuse to spend more quality time together) they decided that they should take their musical relationship seriously. As the collaboration became their main focus, they realized something was missing - a rhythm section - and recruited longtime Fuzz associates bassist David Shuman (The Lilys, MayKate O'Neil Band)) and drummer ...
