Dean Miller's third album may not reach the lofty sales figures referred to in its title, but it certainly is a strong and well-crafted work that represents his best music to date. Free of the intrusive presence of major-label A&R people (who take a pounding in his tune "Music Executive"), Miller has been able to craft a set of songs that are long on craft but short on needless gloss -- Miller and his crack studio band give this material a strong and professional sound, but without sounding like he's bending over backward for a hit, and in a better world this is just what country radio would sound like these days. Miller also knows how to write a well-crafted song, a gift he inherited from his father Roger Miller, and while "Hard Love," "Whiskey Wings," and "On a Good Day" don't break much new ground, they work the traditional C&W archetypes of women, liquor, and hard times with enough smarts and passion to make the results sound fresh. He also knows a good song when he hears it, as evidenced by great covers of Fred Eaglesmith's "105" and "I've Been a Long Time Leaving," which his dad wrote (and Waylon Jennings cut on the classic Dreaming My Dreams). It's anyone's guess if Dean Miller will actually move a million units of Platinum, but it certainly deserves to be heard by a lot more people than his flawed first and second efforts. ~ Mark Deming

Platinum album
$7.29 R.I.D.E., the title of Trick Pony's third album, stands for "Rebellious Individuals Delivering Entertainment." Of course, in 2000's Nashville, rebelling could often mean playing straight-up old-school country while not taking oneself too seriously, two pursuits at which Trick Pony excels. A ...
| | Blaine Larsen Off To Join The World CD (2005)
Platinum CD music
$7.69 With looks reminiscent of a young Paul Newman and a resonant baritone that is equal parts Merle Haggard and George Strait, Blaine Larsen amazed the record industry by scoring a Billboard hit ("How Do You Get That Lonely") that came from an independently released album, and was recorded while the singer was still in ...

Platinum music CDs
$9.99 Many contestants on AMERICAN IDOL and similar TV shows go on to greater success, but due to their relative lack of experience, often have a hard time finding their niche. Not Miranda Lambert--when KEROSENE was released in 2005, the NASHVILLE STAR third-place winner was barely out of her teens, but she had already spent years honing her ...

Platinum CD music
$14.59 Country singer Ty Herndon is back in the studio after a six-year break. Yeah, there was a Christmas record a couple of years back, but this is the first time the Meridian, Mississippi wonder has done an honest to goodness modern country record in nearly seven years. Herndon hit the charts and the road in a fury during the mid-'90s, and his demons hit back hard. Right: Herndon had a hellhound on his trail. Right About Now is one of those records that a man makes when he feels he has everything to prove. On the Jackson/Titan independent label (which ...
