Chaka Khan is the youngest singer of the group and the most contemporary. However, she is musically capable of stretching from funk and soul to jazz. A multi-GRAMMY winner, she is seen and heard moving into straight away jazz vocalizing in this performance taped in 1993, at the Blue Note in New York. The 1970s and '80s were lit up by the supreme vocal talents of soul diva Chaka Khan. An eclectic career has seen Khan covering a lot of musical ground, from the disco-inflected early '70s work with Rufus to hip-hop tinged '80s hits such as "I Feel For You" to a latter day career as a jazz vocalist. This concert from 1993 sees Khan taking to the stage at the Blue Note in New York, where she lets her vocal chords loose on a selection of jazz numbers, proving that she is truly one of the GREAT WOMEN SINGERS OF THE 20TH CENTURY. Great Women Singers Of The 20th Century - Chaka Khan Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Proven chops for jazz Firstly, the sound is something left to be desired. After a few songs the sound is not an issue. The observation is how Miss Khan has effortlessly blossomed from a "wild child" (an old name given to her by some critics) to a jazz vocal force to be reckoned with.
Obviously, still in full control of her strong contralto after years of belting out some of the most remembered R&B classics of the 70's and 80's, she has come full circle.
To make a full turn from one genre to another, and not only be good at it but to be great is very rare indeed for any artist. scatting and showing her prowess at adlibbing, which is seldomly seen, is a treat and a viewing many young artists could learn from.
This is a more loose atmosphere than her BET Jazz venture, with more passion and conviction. Truly a great showing of why she is one of the greatest women singers of the 20th century. Chaka Khan fan or no; this live performance is highly recommended to anyone who really knows jazz.

The Joy of Chaka singing Jazz! First, the sound could've been remixed better, but put that aside and you have a great performance from Chaka singing Jazz, Chaka is in great voice and this is a Happy performance from her! What i love about this performance is you get to hear Chaka use her improvisational skills, which I wish she could do more of.
