| | Chemical Brothers Push The Button CD - Import Chemical Brothers Discography of CDs
The Chemical Brothers' fifth album--a stunning return to bold, brilliant, mid-1990s form--delivers fierce beats, propulsive rhythms, and hallucinatory samples that are, if anything, even better than some of the duo's earliest work, moving in exciting and different directions.
The requisite "big beat" dance-floor material is exemplified by "The Big Jump" and the ever-evolving "Believe" (with vocals by Bloc Party's Kele Okereke), but the real surprise here is the wealth of gentler tracks. "Hold Tight London" features a lovely vocal by Anna-Lynne Williams and a glistening sonic edge that's both glacial and warm, and the lengthy, gorgeous instrumental "Surface to Air" glides along on haunting, beat-driven lines. Then there's the flipside of that, as on "Galvanize," a deep-funk-fried slice of Arabian techno-rap featuring Q-Tip, and "Left Right," a blistering anti-war track with rhymes by Anwar Superstar. Unlike much of the Brothers' earlier output, PUSH THE BUTTON covers a lot of ground, uncovering other sonic worlds just beneath the well-tread electronica surface.
Includes a bonus DVD (NTSC, Region 2).

EMI. 2005.Rolling Stone (No. 966, p.61) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "[T]here's hope for stadium-ready dance music in the Chemical Brothers' fifth album....full of beat-wise psychedelia..." Spin (p.87) - "It's the album on which the Chems relax into a comfortable maturity, secure in their status as elder statesmen." - Grade: B+ Uncut (p.73) - 4 stars out of 5 - "The standout is grand finale 'Surface To Air', which cements the duo's long love affair with New Order across an epic seven-minute symphony of lean melody and pulsing melodrama." Mojo (Publisher) (p.101) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[They have] succeeded in making a tougher, darker-sounding record....The guest list is substantial and crucial." Push The Button Review

Jackson's domination of the world record market continued following Thriller, although by comparison it was an almighty flop with only 12 million sales. As Pink Floyd and Dire Straits have proved, one album can go completely sales haywire without necessarily being any better. The title track and the gorgeous "Man In The Mirror" were substantial hits, but quality material such as "Dirty Diana" and "Liberian Girl" bolster a strong album. Jackson also seemed to have found the romance he seeks in "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" and "The Way You Make Me Feel." Regardless of his press, history clearly shows that he has made a lot of people very, very happy.

| | Zuco 103 Outro Lado CD (2000)
Push The Button songs
$13.59 Zuco 103's music is, like its lineup, a unique and wonderful Euro-Brazilian hybrid. Dusky-voiced Lilian Viera is supported by keyboardist/programmer Stefan Schmid and drummer/programmer Stefan Kruger, and the music they make is a highly successful fusion of samba, bossa nova, trip hop, jazz, funk, and drum'n'bass. For all of its potential, a mixture like this one doesn't have to be successful -- less talented and thoughtful musicians would let the musical ideas get lost in willful eclecticism or would use the trappings of one tradition as mere decoration for another. Instead, Zuco 103 uses the varying backgrounds of its members synergistically, letting Bahia-style drumming segue neatly into jungle breakbeats ("Brazilectro"), or reframing traditional Brazilian percussion in a drum'n'bass context, complete with vinegary, ultra-low basslines, and bossa-nova-ish vocals ("Um Coco"). When the harmony vocals kick in on the chorus to that last song, you'll think you've died and gone to the beach. There's a clunker or two on this program (the cheesy lounge samba of "No Bar do Samba" is a bit much), but overall it's a solid winner. ~ Rick Anderson
