Stravinsky: The Firebird & Pulcinella Suite / Boulez
$12.05 When one applies for a job, sometimes the response is that you're overqualified. The same may be the case for Peisha McPhee. Her classically trained, strong, clear voice of operatic proportions doesn't always fit well with the songs on the play list, songs that require somewhat more vocal dynamics than McPhee gives. Trying hard as she can to restrain her powerful voice, she comes on too strong for such pop material as "Ill Wind" and "Little Girl Blue," which require greater subtlety than McPhee provides. At the same time, her voice and demeanor go well with songs that have a strong emotional tug, such as "Who Can I Turn To?" There's also a cleverly contrived dubbed a cappella duet on "Isn't It Romantic." But her forte is in the Gershwin material. "The Man I Love" and the Gershwin medley require the dramatic reading that a formidable voice like McPhee's can give them. Her sole accompaniment for this session is pianist, composer, and voice teacherMel Dangcil. Usually the concern is that the piano player may overwhelm the singer. Not the case here. Dangcil has to work hard not be swamped by the strong voice of McPhee. The result is that matters sometimes get a bit busy. McPhee needs more than just a piano to provide an adequate framework for her exceptional voice. For the pure pleasure of hearing a lovely voice, this album is recommended. ~ Dave Nathan
Ms.McPhee is an extra ordinary talent. She brings passion to many of the songs, especially Harold Arlen's Ill Wind - and I most enjoyed her a cappella rendition of Rodgers and Hart's Isn't It Romantic. We discover a lonely woman remembering her lost childhood as she sings the Rodgers and Hart standard Little Girl Blue. She hopelessly tries to face her demons with the Arlen/Koehler lament Ill Wind.Sunlight and hope slowly enter her heart as she lifts her spirit ...

| | Drums Along The Mohawk DVD (1939)
Stravinsky: The Firebird & Pulcinella Suite / Boulez
$10.29 DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK is John Ford's first film in Technicolor (which recently perfected far richer shadings of color than had previously been possible), and the director uses it to stunning effect. The film stars Henry Fonda as Revolutionary War-era farmer Gilbert Martin, who, in 1776, has returned with his well-born wife, Lana (Claudette Colbert), to his rustic cabin in the increasingly dangerous Mohawk River valley. At first unaccustomed to the harsh physical challenges of frontier life, Lana adjusts to the work at hand and is soon able to help her husband in the fields. Shortly after they learn that the colonies are at war with the British, their farmhouse is attacked and burned to the ground by a party of Tory-led Indians. The feisty Widow McKlennar (Edna May Oliver) provides temporary shelter for the couple, but it's only a matter of time before the Indians launch a more brutal assault. Save for THE QUIET MAN, DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK contains the richest passages of pastoral imagery in Ford's entire canon, the visual beauty nearly upstaging the spectacular and terrifying Indian battles. The performances, particularly Oliver (who garnered an Oscar nomination) as the vinegary widow and the superbly stoic Fonda, enable Ford to again demonstrate ...

$27.85 | | Blind Lemon Jefferson Long Lonesome Blues: Lemon's Texts Revealed CD (2004)
Stravinsky: The Firebird & Pulcinella Suite / Boulez
$14.49 Blind Lemon Jefferson's blues 78s were popular in the late '20s, and those who owned copies played them frequently. That very popularity, however, is the reason that the sound quality on the Jefferson 78s that survived into the 1960s, when blues scholars and collectors seriously entered the fray, is so poor: people played them to death, and no amount of mastering voodoo can change that. This release offers listeners something called Sonic Depth Technology, and while the sound of these recordings is somewhat clearer than what has been heard in the past, the attendant crackles and omnipresent hiss are still there, and ironically, they're even more noticeable than before, when Jefferson's vocals and the sound of stylus damage at least merged into a kind of ambient hailstorm. Now the performance is clearer, but so is the white noise. Short of reanimating Blind Lemon Jefferson and handing him a guitar, this situation is not going to change. The lyric transcriptions in the CD booklet are interesting, since Jefferson's words are often indecipherable at any speed, but in spite of the liner notes, which offer slightly ridiculous comparisons ...
