An early Harlem street corner harmony group, the Crows arguably had the first hit rock & roll record when a song they had recorded in 1953, "Gee," had a surprising resurgence a year later and crossed over from the R&B charts onto the Top 20 pop list. A little rawer and rougher than the doo wop groups that would follow them, the Crows released eight singles (16 sides) on the Rama Records label between 1952 and 1954, then disbanded after their last single, "Sweet Sue," an amped-up remake of the Earl Burnett hit from 1928, failed to generate much interest with the public. This brief compilation has both of those songs, plus "I Love You So," the strong flip side of "Gee," and given that the Crows were woefully under-recorded, it probably has all that casual listeners will need. ~ Steve Leggett Crows Gee Songs | 1. | Gee | |

| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Gee CD music
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night.

| | Duke Ellington ... And His Mother Called Him Bill CD (1967) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Gee music CDs
$9.99 Twenty-four big digitally remasted with restored original artwork.
"Bill" is of course Billy Strayhorn, the composer, arranger and pianist who served as Ellington's musical alter ego from their meeting in 1939 to his death in 1967. Strayhorn's contributions to the Ellington book, and to the jazz repertoire in general, were enormous. "Lush Life," the tune with which he introduced himself to Duke, remains one of the most literate (and challenging) ballads of all time, while "Take The 'A' Train," which became the Ellington band's theme song, is one of the most widely-known compositions in the jazz cannon.
AND HIS MOTHER CALLED HIM BILL sidesteps these particular pieces but still draws from the full range of Strayhorn's career. A number of long-standing members of the band were still on hand in the summer and fall of 1967 when these recordings were made, adding further poignancy and musical depth to this tribute. Of particular note are Johnny Hodges' aching alto melodies on "Blood Count" and "Day Dream," Cat Anderson's relaxed and confident plunger mute work on "Charpoy," and Ellington's own keyboard punctuation ...

| | Ron Trent Deep And Sexy 2 CD (2003)
Gee CD music
$12.19 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Ron Trent.
The second installment of Deep and Sexy offers more of the same deep grooves the first installment provided, but this time it's coming from Chicago house DJ Ron Trent instead of label owner François Kevorkian. Having been a DJ since the tender age of nine years old (a Guinness world record?), Trent cut his teeth on the mean streets of Chicago and DJed alongside the likes of Frankie Knuckles before he could even drive a car. And while this longevity has earned Trent legendary status over the past few decades, his formula for soulful deep house has stayed consistent as well. That said, Deep and Sexy, Vol. 2 is more of the same from Trent, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, either. Soft, jazzy chords from Fender Rhodes and Latin-glazed percussive tracks are the order of the day for the hour-plus excursion, including a stunning cover version of Stevie Wonder's "That Girl" from Matty Heilbronn. ~ Rob Theakston
Ron Trent travels between gigs in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, the UK and Japan. By day, Trent works in the recording studio producing his own singles; once the sun goes down, he makes people dance. 'I was DJing at the age of 9,' says Ron Trent . 'By the time ...

$9.69 Like an Aquanet-based amber fossil, this 2007 budget-priced compilation cherry-picks 12 perfectly preserved tunes from the late 1980s and early '90s recordings of the Hollywood-based hard-rock band L.A. Guns. Led by former Guns N' Roses guitarist Tracii Guns and vocalist Phil Lewis, the group excelled at raunchy pop-metal (see "Sex Action"), but also knew its way around a sensitive power ballad, as best evinced by the woozy weeper "The Ballad of Jayne."
