Soundtrack English Cole Porter's smash Broadway musical ANYTHING GOES received its second silver-screen treatment with this 1956 remake directed by Robert Lewis (ZEIGFELD FOLLIES). Updating the original 1936 version with loads of 1950s-era Hollywood glamor (including lavish costume designs by Edith Head), Lewis invited laconic crooner Bing Crosby to reprise his starring role opposite a newcomer, dancer Donald O'Connor. The retooled plot centers on Broadway actors Bill Benson (Crosby) and Ted Adams (O'Connor), who face a series of professional and romantic entanglements with the lovely leading ladies, Gaby (Jeanmaire) and Patsy (Mitzi Gaynor), on board an ocean liner travelling from Paris to New York. The unusual love quadrangle is punctuated by Crosby and O'Connor's showstopping song-and-dance numbers for a breezy ear- and eye-candy confection from the golden age of Hollywood musicals. $9.69 Walter Lang's lush musical story--buoyed by Irving Berlin's brilliant score--follows the Donahues, a singing, dancing, drinking Irish Catholic family, as they rise to fame on the theater circuit during vaudeville's last hurrah between World War I and World War II. The stellar cast includes a young Marilyn Monroe, physical comic whiz Donald O'Connor, pop singer Johnny Ray, and dancing phenomenon Mitzi Gaynor. With lavish production numbers, which rival those of any other musical of the 1950s, and numerous famous tunes, including "Remember," "Heat Wave," "Play a Simple Melody," and the showstopping title tune (belted out by the incomparable Ethel Merman), THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW ...

Anything Goes review
$10.29 This Bing Crosby features two of the legendary troubadour's best loved films: THE BIRTH OF THE BLUES, which pairs Crosby with Mary Martin in 1920s New Orleans, and BLUE SKIES, featuring the dueling talents of Fred Astaire and Mr. Crosby. See individual titles for details.
Bing Crosby and Mary Martin star as two jazz artists in the swinging world of 1920's New Orleans. Crosby is Jeff Lambert, a clarinet player who is out to start a band called the Basin Street Hot-Shots. When Betty Lou (Martin) joins as vocalist, romance ensues between everyone involved, stirring things up a bit. The film pays homage to Dixieland greats such as Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, ...

Anything Goes review
$10.15 Action director Ringo Lam, who had previously directed comedies but had since infused the action genre with real drama and social concerns with CITY ON FIRE, returned halfway with TOUCH AND GO. There's a lot of action, but it is all done with tongue planted firmly in cheek. The star, Sammo Hung, a very popular actor in such Hong Kong kung fu films as DRAGONS FOREVER, plays Fat Goose, a noodle stall worker who has the misfortune of witnessing a Mafia murder. He is convinced by the police to do his civic duty and testify in court against a known Triad member. The police promise to protect him from mob reprisals but fail to do so, and he is left to defend himself. Hung, who stages and choreographs his own fight scenes, has a deft comic touch that includes a lot of silly gags along with the violence. The resulting style is more like a Jackie Chan film, in which realism is often jettisoned in favor of entertainment. The plot, which could be a serious indictment of the incompetence and corruption of the Royal Hong Kong Police, is played for laughs instead. After this effort, which is very much a Sammo Hung film, Lam returned to his own brand of stylized realism in his portrayal of crime and violence with the hit FULL CONTACT.
Ace director Ringo Lam ("Full Contact," "Maximum Risk") helms this intense action thriller starring the great Sammo Hung (Eastern Condors, CBS' TV series "Martial Law"). After witnessing a triad killing of a cop, Goose (Hung), a restaurant worker, is asked to testify when the suspect is caught. But when the killer is released on bail, he decides to go after Goose. ...
| | Anchorman The Legend Of Ron Burgundy/Anchorman Wake Up Ron Burgundy DVDs (2004) Widescreen
Anything Goes DVD
$32.25 The Will Ferrell comedy ANCHORMAN is packaged with a second adventure for the macho San Diego newsman, WAKE UP RON BURGUNDY.
It's the early 1970s and the local anchorman is not only a source of news but a revered local hero. In San Diego, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), a mustachioed bachelor with a taste for scotch, unparalleled passion for the jazz flute, and a near-telepathic connection with his spirited mutt, Baxter, is that man. Rounding out Ron's testosterone-heavy news team are his close friends--cologne-obsessed man-on-the-street Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), sports reporter Champ Kind (Dave Koechner), and mentally challenged weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carrell). Their male camaraderie is challenged, though, when producer Ed Harken (Fred Willard), pressured by changing times, brings the first female reporter, ambitious Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), to the team. Ron finds his chauvinistic ideals compromised further when he starts falling in love with her. Fueled by Ferrell's singularly loopy persona, ANCHORMAN joins the long list of comedies which have successfully poked fun at the styles and mores of the '70s. Here, with Ferrell's script and Adam McKay's direction, the character of Ron Burgundy becomes a full-bodied comic creation whose possibilities for laughs aren't nearly exhausted by the end credits. The result is an often hilarious celebration of moustaches, wide neckties, alcohol abuse, and good, old-fashioned sexism.
A "sequel" to the absurdist comedy ANCHORMAN, WAKE UP RON BURGUNDY was compiled from footage and scenes cut from the first film for length. Obviously retaining the same cast and crew from ANCHORMAN, WAKE UP RON BURGUNDY features the news crew led by Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) investigating an extremist organization known as The Alarm ...
