Riding high on the 2005 "screamo" wave, New York emo band Every Time I Die unleashed its melodic/dissonant hardcore sound on a bigger audience with GUTTER PHENOMENON, the band's first charting album. Here the group charges through 11 fiery tracks of aggressive, metal-tinged emo, as angst-ridden frontman Keith Buckley steers the course with his potent croon-to-a-scream vocals.

These Guys Are Good I guess you could say these guys are "screamo" but they're more math/southern metal like that one guy said. They're a lot harder than a lot of "screamo" bands out there, and they're actually good unlike most "screamo" bands. Good guitars, drums, vocals... they're just good, and they're for a select crowd. Overall it's a great album, I'd recommend it to anyone. Rock On! (P.S. Best songs are "The New Black" and "Champing At The Bit") Submitted by Russell (Joshua, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Solid Album I love every time i die. One of my favorite bands in heavy music today. I enjoy Gutter Phenomenon better than Hot Damn! actually. But I'm a fan of more southern sounding metal. If you're expecting old ETID, you'd probably a little bummed about the little change in sound. But I personally love it. Submitted by thedeathbatboy (Mansfield, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Gutter Phenomenon
$9.69 Eternal Youth sees the Future Bible Heroes hitting a wonderfully compelling and mature stride and never wavering from their romantic electro roots. A cute sleeve and gamey lyric transcriptions are here as on past albums, and the band is still playful through and through, but there's a gravity at work from the album's hazy concept of love and aging to its beautifully dark and rich arrangements. Though Christopher Ewen might be the musical brains of the affair and Stephin Merritt is the witty lyrical mastermind, Claudia Gonson is the heart and soul of the band on Eternal Youth. Her droll but pretty delivery is the band's new trademark. Besides providing every vocal, lead and background, except for two or three background utterances from Merritt on "Kiss Me Only With Your Eyes," her sweet swagger and confidence infuse the album with charm galore. Ewen has really outdone himself here, from his six cinematic instrumental interludes to the electroclash meets new romantic keyboard pop meets Hollywood musical mix of sounds he crafts throughout the album. Merritt is his usual curmudgeonly romantic self, offering up loads of lyrical highlights, such as "I would rather be the queen at the guillotine in a bloody insurrection...than ...
| | Clem Snide Soft Spot CD (2003)
Gutter Phenomenon
$16.29 Clem Snide has crafted another gem with the band's fourth album, Soft Spot. Released in 2001, The Ghost of Fashion was one of the best releases of that year, and while this record may not quite reach that level, it is a strong document of a band at the top of its game. It is also a record by a band that has gone through some changes. Apart from a couple of songs like "Action," a country-rock stomper with harmonica and bells and typically smart and funny Eef Barzelay lyrics, and the horn-driven, punchy "Happy Birthday," Soft Spot is a quiet record. Barzelay's intimate vocals are surrounded by gently strummed guitars and subtle orchestrations of keyboards and glockenspiels concocted by Jason Glasser. Tunes like the heartbreakingly melancholic album opener, "Forever, Now and Then," "Find Love," and the prayer-like "Fontanelle" are Clem Snide's most personal-sounding songs to date, as Barzelay casts aside the distance his witty lyrics creates and writes from the heart. Sure, he still drops in a few lyrical jaw-droppers like "Lip-sync me a melody so sweet and clear/Mouth the words of love like a feather in my ear" from the bossa nova-inflected "Tuesday, October 24th" and "half Jewish boys makes kick ass drummers" from the hilarious "Happy Birthday," but much of the album seems to be moving toward American Music Club territory, where emotionally bare, exceedingly adult music that really grabs your heartstrings and gives them a good yank is the order of the day. Eef Barzelay isn't quite as gloomy as Mark Eitzel yet, and probably never will be. For that and for his amazingly quirky yet effective vocal delivery, listeners should be thankful -- and they should also be thankful ...
