The easy, likeable pop folk of Jimmie Rodgers earned him several hits in the late '50s while he was under contract to Roulette Records, some of the biggest of which are included on this brief set, including "Honeycomb" and "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine." Unfortunately there is a lot that isn't here, as well, like one of his finest Roulette singles, the pleasantly resigned "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling in Love Again" and his excellent late-'60s hit "It's Over." For a more complete single-disc overview of Rodgers' career, listeners should turn to Rhino's Best of Jimmie Rodgers, which is exactly what it says it is. ~ Steve Leggett Jimmie Rodgers Honeycomb Songs Purchase Honeycomb CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole Facing Future CD (1993)

| | Rod Morris Bimbo CD (2000) (Import) Import; Germany
Honeycomb songs
$20.09 Rod Morris never had a national hit and is now a forgotten major-label country artist of the '50s. His claim to fame was that he wrote "Bimbo," a number one hit for Jim Reeves in 1953. On his own, Morris' vintage Capitol recordings were mostly solid if unspectacular honky tonk and novelties; Morris had a serviceable voice but not an identifiable sound. The ...
| | Glenn Yarbrough Chicago Tapes: Second Set CD (2001)
Honeycomb album
$13.85 Glenn Yarbrough & The Limelighters: Glenn Yarbrough (vocals, guitar); Alex Hassliev (vocals, guitar, banjo); Lou Gottlieb (vocals, bass).
Folk groups have at least one distinct advantage over rock & roll bands when it comes to reunions: They may have to change the key a song was sung in, but it still resembles the original. The Limeliters easily recapture the glory of yesteryear on The Chicago Tapes: Second Set, a live date recorded -- of all places -- in the basement of a bank in 1976 (think Bicentennial). Lou Gottlieb, Alex Hassilev, and Glenn Yarbrough offer their unique blend of wit and charisma as though they'd never parted ways in the mid-'60s. The set kicks off with the lively "There's a Meeting Here Tonight" and a full-band version of "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven." Yarbrough goes solo on "Easy Now," showing off his beautiful tenor and romantic sensibility. "The Irish Medley" succeeds by taking ten minutes to cover four classic songs, avoiding the short shrift treatment that usually accompanies such mixtures. There's a funny little section titled "Fielding Questions," interesting because of the interplay between the band who seems to enjoy one another's company. "Heaven Help Me for the Way I Am" has a fuller arrangement, perhaps a little ...
| | Robbie Williams Sing When You're Winning CD (2000)
Honeycomb CD music
$10.49 A unique collection of Sinatra classics as interpreted by the ex-Take That frontman. 2001, U.K. import.
The former Take That heartthrob's follow-up to THE EGO HAS LANDED is so slick and covers so many stylistic bases that one's initial response is that it's too clever by half. On more careful listening, however, it seems more the work of a true pop obsessive, a guy with an encyclopedic enthusiasm for all sorts of music.
The lyrics here are literate, funny, and loaded with attitude (in the good sense); you have to love a guy who can reference John Coltrane, AC/DC, and the Manic Street Preachers on the same album. The music is similarly smart, ranging from high quality dance pop of the boy band variety ("Kids," a duet with Britney Spears' role model Kylie Minogue), to the alt-rock Oasis-meets-Led Zeppelin guitar grind of "Let Love Be Your Energy," to songs that sound uncannily like IMAGINE-era John Lennon ("Better Man"). Best of all, however, is "Rock D.J.," a Cockney-rap track which sounds like modern day Ian Dury until it closes with a lift of the vocal breakdown from Sly Stone's "Dance To the Music." All in all, SING WHEN YOU'RE WINNING is an ambitious and highly entertaining piece of work.
Brilliant covers album from2001 by the UK Popstar. Instead of your standard album of recent songs, Williams reaches back to the days of the Rat Pack (Frank, Dean and Sammy) and comes out swingin', with most of the tracks recorded at the same studios that many of Capitol Records' original crooners recorded at using some of the same musicians! Featuring duets with Frank Sinatra, Nicole Kidman, Jane Horrocks, Jon Lovitz and Jonathan Wilkes. Tracks include, 'Something Stupid', 'Do Nothing 'Till You Hear From Me', 'Mack The Knife', 'I Will Talk And Hollywood Will Listen', 'Well, ...
| | Legendary Marshall Family Vol. 1 CD (2002)
Honeycomb music CDs
$8.99 Marshall Family/Various Artists: Pop Marshall, Danny Marshall (vocals); Ben Marshall (bass guitar, background vocals); David Marshall, Judy Marshall.
Southern Baptist listeners may wonder what exactly the members of this family gospel group are doing standing in front of a Mormon temple in the cover photo, but have no fear -- there are no heretical doctrines or sneaky arrangements of "Come, Come Ye Saints" lurking in this collection. Just lots of solid traditional and original songs and some of the most hair-raisingly fine (and occasionally downright eerie) singing in the history of bluegrass-gospel music. The Marshall Family emerged suddenly from obscurity in the mid-'70s and were quickly taken under the wing of Ralph Stanley, who featured them in his annual festival and otherwise promoted their career ...
