Eric Clapton's first album of mostly original material since 2001, BACK HOME, as the title implies, finds the revered British guitarist/vocalist in a comfortable, confident setting. Here Clapton's signature blues-rock sound is the order of the day, as exemplified by the easy-going "Revolution," which riffs on the lyrics of the Beatles song of the same name, and conjures up the reggae-tinged vibe of EC's famous rendition of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff." Clapton's Beatles connection also pops up on a gentle cover of "Love Comes to Everyone" by his friend George Harrison. In addition to his longtime bandmates Doyle Bramhall II and Andy Fairweather Low (guitar), Nathan East (bass), and Steve Gadd (drums), who have an almost telepathic connection with Clapton, BACK HOME features contributions by John Mayer, Billy Preston, Steve Winwood, Vince Gill, and Robert Randolph. However, these artists never distract from Clapton, who is clearly playing to the strengths of his more pop-oriented side.

Mojo (Publisher) (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Clapton's playing is still fluid, his vocals remain convincing, and the songs range from a smouldering semi-reggae groove on 'Revolution' to a growling slow blues..." Eric Clapton Back Home Songs Back Home Music Review Average Rating: (2.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews well... mr clapton seems to be very confortable with himself these days, he has found that long-awaited peace he was looking for so long. And this album reflects that feeling. This is not a blues record, is a batch of easy listening songs, a reggae tune, one blues in the middle, and the rest is pure AOR. So if you want a record that can make you company while ironing or cleaning your garage, this is the one. Dont look for more, cos there is nothing more. Clapton goes down! Perhaps Mr Clapton (aka 'God') should consider retirement? This album provides clear evidence that he's lost the glow of his God-like status. No good rock numbers, no blues, no screaming guitar; there's nothing on this album that signifies what made Clapton the legend he is. He should at the very least make just one more album that recalls his classic sounds to redeem himself from this abysmal CD before he goes to the 'choir invisible'. | | Eric Clapton Sessions For Robert J CDs (2004) Comes with a bonus DVD featuring live performances
Back Home
$17.99 During the filming of tour rehearsals that followed the release of Eric Clapton's acclaimed ME AND MR. JOHNSON, bassist Nathan East jokingly noted that many of the band's performances were "better than on the album." Clapton's longtime low-ender may have been right, as the resultant SESSIONS FOR ROBERT J provides the best of both worlds--the freshness of live interaction and the sound quality of a studio album.
The differences between the two discs are sometimes striking, but often subtle. Clapton's vocals on "Milkcow's Calf Blues" are more forceful, Billy Preston's organ stabs on "Stop Breakin' Down Blues" just that much funkier. Of course, SESSIONS FOR ROBERT J (which comes paired with a lengthy documentary DVD featuring the practice sessions and interview footage) also includes several Robert ...
| | No Direction Home Soundtrack - Bootleg Series 7 No Direction Home: The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 CDs (2005)
Back Home
$15.99 The soundtrack to Martin Scorcese's two-part PBS documentary on Bob Dylan, NO DIRECTION HOME is a two-disc affair consisting almost entirely of previously unreleased material. One couldn't start any further towards the beginning of Dylan's career than this collection's first track, "When I Got Troubles," a modest, folkish tune caught on tape by a high school friend and presumed to be the first original Dylan song ever recorded. From there, we follow the breakneck trajectory of Dylan's early career, as he develops at an unprecedented rate, from young Woody Guthrie acolyte (a rare version of Guthrie's signature tune "This Land is Your Land") to his own protest songs (Town Hall, NYC performances of "Masters ...
