THE STAGE DOOR SWINGS showcases Stan Kenton using the range and power of his big band to interpret 12 Broadway hits. Listeners might assume that a "Broadway Hits" set would find Kenton scaling back his usual progressive tendencies, but that is not the case. The arrangements by Lennie Niehaus are ambitious and at times grandiose, utilizing the full force of the 18-piece group.
The set includes such familiar gems as Cole Porter's "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye," Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Bali Ha'i," and Adler and Ross's "Whatever Lola Wants." There are several fine soloists, including Neihaus himself on alto sax on "Baubles, Bangles, and Beads" and "Hey There." As usual, Kenton manages music that is harmonically advanced yet also highly melodic and swinging, making this a fine set for fans of Broadway musicals, big-band swing, and challenging large-ensemble arrangements.

Stan Kenton Stage Door Swings Songs Stage Door Swings Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) One of Kenton's Best Sellers When "The Stage Door Swings" was released in 1958 it became a best seller for the Stan Kenton Orchestra.A collection of 12 Broadway tunes done a la Kenton, proving that Big Band music was still able to sell records if done right. This CD reissue is beautifully remastered and would be a good "buy" for curious fringe Kenton fans, and a "must" for all the hard core Kentonites as well. Broadway Swings! This is the Kenton aggregation swinging at its best on Broadway tunes. It's always been one of my favorite Kenton recordings. Section work and soloists are typically superb Kenton as the band swings itself through 12 marvelous Lennie Neihaus charts. Submitted by Leonard.Levy2 (Westwood, N.J.) Was This Review Helpful? Five stars only for the music As it is now a sad tradition, Capitol continues on slaughtering Stan Kenton's exceptional albums.
This one, recorded in September 1958, with beautiful, incredibly modern and up-to-date arrangments by Lennie Niehaus, another genius from Kenton's basket, is particularly pleasant for the easy, swinging treatment of classic Broadway tunes.
The original LP had the usual splendid Capitol's full-bodied, crystal clear sound, reduced to a strident, bass-shy, nerve-wracking sound by the inept digital mastering.
One has to ask : what kind of monitors (or ears) does Mr.McMaster have at Capitol's, to equalize in such an horrible way?

Few musicians were such a double threat as Chet Baker; he could blow a cool trumpet, and croon a lazy ballad or a bouncing standard with the best of them. His butter-smooth voice is featured here on his first session for Riverside, CHET BAKER SINGS IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU. Of course, the great old chestnut in the title is not the only gem contained herein--Baker also swings and sings such great Rogers and Hart songs as "Do It the Hard Way," My Heart Stood Still," and "Dancing on the Ceiling."
Hearing the combination of Baker's lazy West Coast swing and the driving push of his East Coast sidemen on uptempo numbers like "You're Driving Me Crazy" or "My Heart Stood Still" is an undoubted treat, but it's smoky ballads such as "I'm Old Fashioned" and the swaying title track that win the most points. For lovers of great old songs sung with feeling, CHET BAKER SINGS IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU is hard to beat.
Chet Baker made his musical debut in 1952 as an integral member of Gerry Mulligan's modernist piano-less quartet, by all accounts marking the beginning of the post-bop West Coast style. So it came as quite a shock when Baker made his singing debut on this seminal 1954 release, he sounded less like a member of the cool school than a boy crooner straight out of the '40s!
Actually, left to his own non-Mulligan devices, Chet Baker the instrumentalist was not an innovator in the post-bebop mode. What his sideline singing did reveal were his songful roots in the swing of Harry James and other formative influences. Still, the bland innocence of Chet Baker's All-American vocals can make for an eerily "cool" listening experience in this context. And an authentically satisfying one, as his definitive version of "My Funny Valentine" should make clear. Throughout, ...
