Freak Guitar: The Road Less Traveled album
$13.35 The title sums it up perfectly: 22 tracks of nearly all-instrumental, mostly original guitar music that is at once over the top, wild, intense, silly, screeching, humorous, and beautiful. The thirty-something Swede, a Frank Zappa disciple, recorded Freak Guitar on an eight-track in his bathroom with little or no effects (despite the outrageous sounds you hear). Most of the cuts are heavy and intense doses of headbanging material filled with lightning-fast shredding and mind-boggling runs up and down the fretboard. A few songs, though, stand out from the rest and serve to break up the somewhat tedious pattern (Eklundh himself -- in the informative and entertaining self-penned liner notes -- ...

Freak Guitar: The Road Less Traveled songs
$22.35 Following a series of self-financed singles and EPs, British quintet Four Day Hombre took the unusual route of appealing to their online fans for the money to formalize their fledgling label Alamo Records and underwrite the recording and pressing of the group's full-length debut album. One hopes the investors thoroughly read and understood the prospectus, because Experiments in Living is weak enough to be a prime target for a shareholder revolt. Though the liner notes claim there are in fact ten songs on Experiments in Living, the casual listener would be forgiven for thinking this was simply one 43-minute epic performed by a band trying their hardest to sound like Coldplay minus all that hard-rocking bluster and machismo. Lead singer Simon Wainwright mewls his way through the entire album in a quavering broken falsetto that makes James Blunt sound like Barry White, while his bandmates seemingly fail to realize that there's a distinct difference between "minimalist" and "barely even trying." The songs lack enough backbone to actually be melodic, so they just sort of exist in this tastefully appointed netherworld, floating endlessly through space as if they're looking ...

Freak Guitar: The Road Less Traveled CD music
$18.19 DANIEL FOSTER JOHNSTONDaniel was raised in the wonderfully diverse musical atmosphere of Memphis, Tennessee. He became enthralled with his older brother’s equally diverse record collection, ranging from Classical and jazz standards to the leaders of the folk music revival of the nineteen-sixties: Odetta, Josh White, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and many others. By age six he had become an avid listener to a variety of music genres, many of which would influence his compositional style. At the age of twelve Daniel was given a Sears “Silvertone” arch-top guitar that his cousin had abandoned. He taught himself how to play and began figuring out songs by ear. When asked to join a friend’s band as ...
