Marcas De Batom
$14.65 An ambitious world fusion project, SIWAN brings together the Norwegian pianist Jon Balke, Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui, the Early Music ensemble Barokksolistene, minimalist trumpeter Jon Hassell, and others in a cross-cultural melange that imagines itself somewhere back in the medieval times of Andalusia, during the era when Spain was dominated by Muslim rule. With the expert help of Barokksolistene (Baroque solists), Balke has composed authentically evocative, Arabic-flavored settings for medieval Christian and Muslim poetic texts, fluently sung by Alaoui who sometimes resembles a serene flamenco singer or, better, a New Age descendant of the great Egyptian diva Oum Kalsoum. Hassell's horn is given ample solo space along with the Algerian violinist Eddine M'Kachiche; they both improvise against the expert zarb (Iranian hand drum) playing of Pedram Khavar ...
| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Marcas De Batom
$13.09 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a ...
| | Bebo & Cigala Lagrimas Negras CD (2004)
Marcas De Batom
$8.99 Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) is a collaborative effort between the octogenarian Cuban piano master Bebo Valdés and the reigning Spanish flamenco cantador, Dieguito El Cigala. Recorded for Fernando Trueba and Nat Chediak's Calle 54 label, the sessions took place in Madrid between September and December 2002. Maestro Valdés (born in 1918), the father of the jazz pianist Chucho, has a long history as an innovator in Cuban music. He recorded the first Afro-Cuban jazz session in 1952, and was a tutor to the great bandleader Beny Moré, writing early charts for him. Valdés is also a world-class arranger. Dieguito El Cigala was born in 1960, and has become the undisputed king of Spain's flamenco singers. This recording features nine tracks that meld together cooking son, jazz, Afro-Caribbean, and flamenco rhythms, in tunes by composers such as Lolita de la Colina, Virgilio and Homero ...

Marcas De Batom
$13.49 Terra feels like an attempt to move Mariza into the musical mainstream. She's already established herself at the forefront of fado, as one of the leading performers of the emotive Portuguese style, and there's no doubt she possesses a wonderful voice. But the addition of several guests, such as Chucho Valdés, Ivan Lins, and Tito Paris (among others) seems to open up the seams between fado and other genres, including Brazilian music and jazz. It does so relatively subtly, and she keeps her base pretty firmly in fado (witness the glorious "Ja Me Deixou"). But the inclusion of a standard like "Smile," which closes the ...

| | Spencer Davis Live In Manchester 2002 CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Marcas De Batom
$16.19 Seminal blues rockers The Spencer Davis Group united for this 2004 live concert, featuring nine classic cuts highlighted by "Keep on Running," "Gimme Some Lovin'," and "I'm a Man."
The Spencer Davis Group's Live in Manchester 2002 finds the same nine songs that appear on the DVD counterpart, yet this CD plays very well as a stand-alone. In fact, without the video presentation as a distraction, the listener gets a sense of how great a pop/blues unit the Spencer Davis Group is even without the talents of a Steve Winwood. Opening with "Keep On Running," this Angel Air release delivers solid musical performances that provide clear evidence why Davis deserves more credit for his contributions than he receives in America and elsewhere around the globe. "When I Come Home" and "Every Little Bit Hurts" could be the performances of a streamlined Allman Brothers Band. "San Francisco Bay" relies on Colin Hodgkinson's bass and creates a bridge between the boom boom boom found on "Dimples" and the smooth consistent groove of "Somebody Help Me." Producer Jimmy Miller, along with original keyboard/vocalist Winwood, created the song "I'm a Man," which extends beyond the Top Ten 1967 chart hit much like the group Chicago's various jams. At eight and a half minutes, it rivals some of Pete Cetera and company's various explorations of this coming-of-age saga. "Gimme Some Lovin'," the song that launched the group in the U.S. in January 1967, concludes this fine set in similar fashion, though at about half the length. The 12-page booklet contains drummer Pete York's extensive liner notes as well as mini bios of the bandmembers. Short and very sweet, this is good stuff. ~ Joe Viglione
