(2 Customer Reviews)
Like its companion It Ain't Easy, the second half of Long John Baldry's early-'70s comeback Everything Stops for Tea initially attracted the most attention via its producers, former Baldry sidemen Elton John and Rod Stewart. The two superstars each handled one side apiece and, though neither shines with the same generous idiosyncrasies that saw the earlier LP sparkle, still they power Baldry to some marvelous heights -- most notably the should-have-been-a-hit cover of "Iko Iko," and a glorious "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover." With Baldry's musical tastes now drawing folkier textures into his blues (and eschewing the big ballad pop altogether), it's a varied and oft-times eclectic collection. But the strength of Baldry's performance smooths over any rough edges that might have tripped other singers and, though It Ain't Easy remains the superior of these two albums, this one really isn't that far behind it. ~ Dave Thompson
The followup to It Ain't Easy, 1972's Everything Stops For Tea was also co-produced by Rod Stewart and Elton John. Remastered and expanded. Warner 2005 Everything Stops For Tea Music Long John Baldry Everything Stops For Tea Songs Everything Stops For Tea Music Everything Stops For Tea Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Long John Baldry If you are to own just one record by Baldry, this is it. The first "side," in particular, is a bit of music which remains powerful, touching, and relevant --- though the original second side has wonderful chops, as well. The added cuts are worthwhile and pleasing, though not as infecticious as the rest. This is a great forgotten recording, which in and of itself explains exactly why Baldry was such a beloved performer during his era. A true treat, and a CD you'll find yourself listening to often. Everything Stops For Tea album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known ...

| | Long John Baldry It Ain't Easy CD (1971) Bonus Tracks; England; Remastered
Everything Stops For Tea CD music
$11.05 It Ain't Easy features a British blues/rock lineup befitting the man behind the Long John Baldry moniker. This album returns Baldry to a decidedly edgier and hipper audience, with a literal cast of all-stars on some of the more adventurous material he had covered to date. This is no doubt due, at least in part, to the involvement of rock superstars Rod Stewart and Elton John. (In fact, John confesses to have taken the last name in his stage moniker from Baldry's first.) Among their contributions to the project, Stewart and Elton divided the production tasks -- each taking a side of the original album. Immediately, Baldry sheds the MOR blue-eyed pop soul image. The backing band on Stewart's side include fellow Face and future Rolling Stone, Ron Wood, on electric guitar and acoustic guitarist Sam Mitchell, who appeared on many of Stewart's early-'70s ...
| | WPG Trio Small, Medium, Large CD (2001)
Everything Stops For Tea music CDs
$15.75 Ostensibly a jazz band, WPG Trio features the insouciant tenor vocals and funky keyboards of leader Benjie Porecki. Obviously influenced by the soul and funk music of the '70s, the group is rounded out with Blues Webb on drums and vocals and Gary Grainger on bass and vocals. Often utilizing group harmony against a funky backbeat and Rhodes keyboard, WPG is reminiscent most specifically of soul-jazz pioneers the Crusaders. Porecki has a light and measured touch on the keyboard and a voice not unlike that of New Orleans warbler Aaron Neville. His cohorts are slick and tight, making Small, Medium, Large an accomplished funk-jazz effort. While WPG has a tight group aesthetic, their choice of covers makes for a lackluster debut. Porecki is a working solo artist and has no doubt played his share of background jazz piano gigs to pay the bills over the years. So it is confusing that this group would choose to record such cocktail-hour requests as "Misty" and the so, so, so overplayed-in-the-'90s "Watermelon Man." Granted, "Misty" is reinvented as a mid-tempo blues shuffle with soulful, gospel-tinged vocals, but couldn't they have chosen ...

| | Monique Rene' Awakened CD (2003)
Everything Stops For Tea album
$14.79 "Calling the cows home." That is what Monique Doolittle would attribute some her strong vocal character to. Growing up on a small farm in Mid Michigan, she spent a lot of time calling the cows and horses up to eat when she did her chores. " It is a special sound that comes from deep inside to bring the cows in from the pasture." Says Monique. "I can't really explain how you do it. I learned it from my mom." She adds. Monique has gone way beyond calling the cows these days. She is very busy with a successful career as a singer and songwriter. With her soulful, gutsy voice she enjoys singing all kinds of music. "I love all music, but my heart is in the country, country music that is." She laughs. She goes on to add that her father use to force her and her brother to listen to it as kids. "We were raised listening to the old country greats, such as ...
