It appears as though no matter what the "flavor of the month" may be on radio or MTV, there will always be a die-hard cult fan base for progressive metal. Popularized by the likes of Dream Theater, the style incorporates the tricky bits of such groups as Yes along with the metallic muscle of Iron Maiden. The top Finnish export is Stratovarius. 2005 saw the release of a self-titled studio album, which shows that the group is still following their original musical path. While the album will undoubtedly please those already converted, to others outside the group's fanatical circle, you can't help but smirk a bit at such Spinal Tap-worthy song titles as "Maniac Dance," "Fight!!!," and "The Land of Ice and Snow," or singer Timo Kotipelto's equal parts Bruce Dickinson and Sebastian Bach vocals. That said, Stratovarius is one of the few prog metal acts that actually puts songwriting ahead of mere shredding and noodling, as evidenced by quite a few tracks on Stratovarius -- including "Just Carry On." ~ Greg Prato

When longtime vocalist Bruce Dickinson left Iron Maiden in 1993, many fans feared that the band was finished. But the rest of the band decided to stick it out, finding a replacement in ex-Wolfsbane frontman "Blaze" Bayley. On Maiden's first recording with Bayley, 1995's THE X FACTOR, the band sticks to the same musical direction of its early-'90s work: straightforward, heavy tunes.
Bayley's voice couldn't have been more different than that of his predecessor. While Dickinson sang in a higher register (often in an operatic style), Bayley was more of a bassy, low-down belter--just listen to such tracks as "Man on the Edge" and "Lord of the Flies" for proof. Unfortunately, the new lineup didn't have the same staying power as the Dickinson-fronted era, lasting for only one more recording.
Suffering from a lack of powerful riffs and tightly written songs, The X Factor is a lackluster latter-day album from Iron Maiden. Although the band doesn't sound particularly bad on the record, they don't sound inspired and there's a noticeable lack of energy to the performances which makes the lack of imagination all the more apparent. On their fourth album, Tiles continue to demonstrate that progressive rock doesn't have to mean either goofy pseudo-mysticism or wanky bloviation. That's not to say that these guys are exactly concise -- the album's title track runs over 17 minutes -- but they generally avoid the standard prog rock trap of trying to impress through empty grandiosity. Even when their songs are on the long side, they're skillfully and tightly crafted and the playing is disciplined and interesting. That's especially true on the instrumentals; "Stop Gap" and "Unicornicopia," both of which feature guest violinist Matthew Parmenter, offer spikily complex rock and nicely unsentimental neoclassicism, respectively, and are among the album's more impressive and enjoyable moments, and "A.02" is a lovely little new acoustic miniature. Challenging and beautiful might seem like contradictory descriptions, but in the case of Safa, they're perfectly apt. With a strong root in Persian music, the trio explores improvisation with clarinet, percussion, tar, and setar, and takes its sound to some very interesting places. What's particularly apparent isn't just the fact that they can all play with wonderful invention, but that they listen, too, and depend on each other to focus a piece of music like the fairly epic "Whisper of Love," where answering phrases lift the mood higher and higher. Putting the music into a pigeonhole isn't easy. Amir Koushkani's Iranian roots might be the heart of it all, and is the basis of three of the tracks here (another, "Nihawend Lunga," is a traditional Turkish piece). The other seven come from the bandmembers and aren't world music, jazz, or anything readily definable. They can work happily in duos -- as on "Aurora," "Shadi," and "Epilogue" -- or together, such as with "Navae." And certainly they set out their stall on the opener, the demanding "Chahar Mezrab," where virtuosity is the key, especially Houle's ecstatic clarinet solo. It took Planet X five years to come up with a follow-up to MoonBabies, and the first thing fans are bound to notice is the absence of guitarist Tony MacAlpine. On this, the group's third studio album, Planet X is presented as a duo -- leader/keyboardist Derek Sherinian and drummer Virgil Donati -- rounded up by guest bassists (Jimmy Johnson and Rufus Philpot) and guitarists (mostly Brett Garsed, also fusion legend Allan Holdsworth on two tracks). You may also find the music veering a little more into fusion territory and less into the metal-fusion genre established by the Magna Carta label -- and all for the better. In fact, Quantum is a quantum leap above previous Planet X releases: stronger compositions (tighter and less flashy), more diversity across the album, better-dosed excitement.
