It's arguable that Miranda Lambert's debut album, Kerosene, is the first true Nashville product produced in the wake of Gretchen Wilson, crafted with an eye on the audience that Wilson's stylized redneck raunch won. Of course, with her golden blonde hair and good looks, Lambert seems like she would be crushed by the rampaging Gretchen, and there's a certain truth that Miranda is a bit fabricated and polished. After all, she started out as an actress, appearing in the long-shelved Piper Perabo teen comedy Slap Her She's French (finally released under the lamentably tame title She Will Have Way), and only got a foothold in the music industry by participating in USA's countrified American Idol knockoff, Nashville Star, where she placed in the top three. All this suggests that Lambert will be as slickly packaged as, say, a Southern Diana DeGarmo, but pop music works in mysterious ways: as it turns out, Lambert wrote all of the tunes on her debut, whereas the seemingly more genuine Wilson only wrote about half. That said, Kerosene lacks the gonzo humor that Big & Rich brought to Here for the Party, and Lambert's sweet girlish voice seems too tame for some of the livelier material. But that's not to say that those tunes don't work as well as the gentler pop tunes (the ballads tend to be a little treacly and nondescript), all of which are sturdily written, delivered with conviction, and given just enough gloss for an appealing sheen. Against all odds, this a rarity in modern mainstream country: a piece of product that's friendly, tuneful, sharper, and more genuine than it initially seems. Maybe Miranda needed a show like to Nashville Star to jump-start her career, but the show gave her the opportunity to make this thoroughly winning debut. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Many contestants on AMERICAN IDOL and similar TV shows go on to greater success, but due to their relative lack of experience, often have a hard time finding their niche. Not Miranda Lambert--when KEROSENE was released in 2005, the NASHVILLE STAR third-place winner was barely out of her teens, but she had already spent years honing her craft in bars. In addition to being a confident vocalist and strong-willed businessperson, Lambert is a crafty songwriter whose work is easily on par with that of Nashville veterans twice her age.
The title track is a pounding, attitude-filled country-rocker reminiscent of John Cougar Mellencamp's "Rain on the Scarecrow." (That this diminutive young blonde woman can spit out lines like "Trade the truth for a lie/Cheatin' ain't really a crime" so convincingly is also startling.) "I Can't Be Bothered" is straight-up honky-tonk, replete with whining steel guitar, Buck Owens-worthy twangy Telecaster, and a jaunty dance beat, while "Me and Charlie Talking" is funky swamp-country of the Jerry Reed variety, albeit with lovelorn lyrics that reveal Lambert's old soul. An uncommonly accomplished debut, KEROSENE is the first outing by a genuine all-around talent.

Dual Disc CD/DVD

Entertainment Weekly (No. 812, p.72) - "[A] spunky set of honky-tonk, country-rock, and Sheryl Crow-style ballads....[Lambert] clearly knows how to write a killer tune." - Grade: B+

5 stars Re: Rip Off!
"Earthbased", you're clearly not in touch with the real world my friend! Rip off? I think not! I too have written a song with a tune unbelievably simimlar to Kerosene & Steve Earls song that you mention. Problem is, I wrote this song over 10 years ago! Way before Miranda's clever tune & I have never heard Steve's song until today when read your review! Get a grip my friend. Miranda....you are brilliant!!!

In 2005, Bobby Bare was coaxed out of 22-year-long retirement from recording by his son Bobby Bare, Jr. to record The Moon Was Blue, a collection of 11 songs the veteran country outlaw always loved but, for the most part, never recorded. Bare Jr. teamed up with fellow country renegade Mark Nevers -- a Nashville veteran, but also a member of indie rock eccentrics Lambchop -- to provide production and assemble a backing ...

I can remember as a boy sitting on the tractor in Seneca Missouri (just outside Joplin), Bushhoggin' my Uncle's field. Nothing to do but sit and dodge yellow jackets and listen to a muffler that needed to be replaced. So I sang (at the top of my lungs) but I sang. I don't know how many people could hear me, but a few did.I wasn't serving the Lord then nor did I for many years after that. I went into the Army and then I married my High School sweetheart-Paula Buening. We were blessed with a beautiful baby girl and after the Army we moved to Oregon. There our son was born. Paula started going to church with the kids and I fought them all the way. Well, you can't stop a prayin' woman and soon I found myself in church with them. Not long after I gave my heart to the Lord, I sat one evening in my bedroom and pondered and prayed, "Lord there must be something I can do with all this music bottled up inside me." Almost immediately the Lord gave me a song. A few days later our Pastor asked me to sing at a New Year's eve watch service. In 1982 we moved again to Prineville, Oregon. Right smack dab in the middle of the state where Paula and I started Pastoring. Again music played a vital role. We are a very musical church and have given many many people an opportunity to be somebody in Christ and serve him.It takes a special woman to be a Pastor's wife and a musician's wife too. Paula is that, a very special woman. Always there for me to reassure me build me up, love me and smile at me—I love you baby. In 1993 I recorded my first album here in Central Oregon, The Same Yesterday, Today and Forever. The record did fairly well for someone who didn't get out and promote it. Today, it is still selling very well. Then in July of 2005, I recorded Walk With Me. This time I went to Gene Breeden Studio in Nashville, TN. Wow what a wonderful group of people. Today both albums are complimenting each other and selling very well. On my first album, I was privileged to have my daughter (Shelly) and son (Brian) sing along with me and Shelly played piano for me. What a blessing to sing with your children. Today we have three (4) beautiful grand-girls Alyssa (13) Rylie (10) and Quinci and Danner (1). They all sing with Grandpa. Rylie and Alyssa were the inspiration for the song Walk With Me. Those ...
