In the Mid-Nite Hour is Warren G's first foray into the land of independent releases and, consequently, marks a huge shift in approach from the too-many-cooks-in-the-kitchen approach that had sunk his final album for Universal, The Return of the Regulator. This album is 100 percent Warren G, make no mistake, and its D.I.Y. feel seems fitting for the sort of guy who produces his own beats as well as raps his own songs. Granted, In the Mid-Nite Hour isn't going to re-establish Warren as the hitmaker that he was for a quick second back in the G-funk era when "Regulate" was the jam. It's simply too real to get picked up by urban radio or music television -- that is, real like that beat-head dude living down your street who makes mixtapes in his bedroom and hands CD-Rs of them out to friends as well as complete strangers. For that reason, In the Mid-Nite Hour isn't going to interest the majority of rap listeners. Sadly, Warren lost his coolness a long time ago. But for older, more grown-up rap listeners who fondly remember when "Regulate" was the jam (and how about "Hey DJ"?), In the Mid-Nite Hour no doubt will be a curious listen. From the bedroom beat-making and Everyman rapping, to the home-PC graphic design and semi-professional photo shoots gracing the inner booklet, this album is street, so to speak, and that makes it very easy for most folks to empathize with Warren. He's no bling-blinger anymore -- he's just another dude at this point, albeit one with tight friends like Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg, who both contribute heavily and bring some major-league charisma to this minor-league charmer. Perhaps Warren should have went indie long ago. The pay probably isn't as nice, but he and his music seem better for it. ~ Jason Birchmeier Though Warren G had trouble matching the commercial success of his 1994 debut, REGULATE...G FUNK ERA, that hasn't stopped him from continuing to plow the laid-back g-funk furrow he established on that album. In fact, IN THE MID-NITE HOUR may be the best example of g-funk Warren G. has released since REGULATE. Focused, sophisticated, and spilling over with superbly produced, heavy-lidded jams strong on fat bass, cool, jazzy keys, and a smooth, R&B-tinged feel, MID-NITE makes tasteful nods to virtually every segment of contemporary urban pop. All the more impressive is the fact that Warren G programs all his own tracks, raps, and brings on heavyweight friends like cousin Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg to guest. $11.39 Half way to heaven, the violets grow...Brian and I have been singing songs from the 1920's together now for perhaps a decade. I started to notice a trend... we kept discovering new songs about flowers. Roses, violets, tulips, daisies, lilacs, daffodils and more, appeared time and again. I started collecting these songs, and asking other musicians if they knew any others. Now, this is not a subject we see in modern times. The people of the flapper era surely had troubles, but it seems that they did not wish to sing about them much. The focus in music was on the romantic, the idealistic, the flirt and the flourish. This album is the result of our journey through gardens in song. Here you will find sunshine, twilight, rain and rainbows, fields and beds of flowers, bluebirds and much romance. These songs make us smile, and we hope they will do the same for you. Please join us for a musical tiptoe through the tulips... and roses, and violets...---------Welcome to our garden. It has been a delight gathering songs for this album, as one might gather flowers for a bouquet. My first flower song was probably "When the Little Red Roses Get the Blues for You," followed closely by "Telling it to the Daisies" and "Tiptoe through the Tulips." It was "Tulips" which inspired my desire for a full album devoted to this subject. After all, even those of us in our 40's know this one, from the version the amazing Tiny Tim made his theme song. As far as I know, Mr. Tim never did perform the intro, which sets up the love story which follows. We are delighted to bring it back here in a style reminiscent of 1929.Many of these songs were once performed by the early jazz singer, Annette Hanshaw (one of my all-time favorites). Included also are songs sometimes associated with Fanny Bryce, Ruth Etting, Gene Austin, Cliff Edwards, (otherwise known as Ukulele Ike, the voice of Jiminy Cricket), Nick Lucas, Johnny Marvin, and Al Jolson, among others. The songs in our bouquet were mostly written in New York City from 1921 to 1929. My Grandma Ruthie was a young woman at this time, it was "her music." She loved the dances and the songs, and she married the trumpet player in the band. I'm a lot like Ruthie, in more than one way!The first time I ever heard Brian perform, he sang "Half Way to Heaven" and "Where the Shy Little Violets Grow." I first fell in love with the music. Fate has allowed me to also fall in love with the musician, and become a full partner in song. It's as fine a love story as any lyric! May you enjoy your journey through our musical garden.LynnH---------Who are the Fabulous Heftones? The duo consists of Brian Hefferan and Lynn Hershberger Hefferan. This is truly a case where one plus one is more than merely two! Brian has been known in the Lansing, Michigan area for many years as a fine instrumentalist (primarily on ukulele ...
